United States of America (USA) Travel Reference Map has been mapped before, but the USA is a huge country, extremely developed, and almost impossible to show on a map without over-simplification. Most commercial maps use small sheets of paper and print single-sided, making it impossible to show this vast country to advantage. Well, Lan’s been hard at work developing a ‘proper’ traveller’s aid to navigating around the USA, and here it is. We printed it on an exceptionally large sheet of paper, 39” tall by 54” wide (our normal printing size is 27”x39”). To do this, we merged our four existing databases into one, then split them so that the west side is on one side and the east side on the other. By the shape of the USA, the New England States fill most of one side of the map, but New York City and Philadelphia are included as well as a goodly portion of New York State. The second side covers the rest of the state, plus all of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and most of Ohio, West Virginia and the northern portion of Virginia. In terms of cities, Cincinnati is at the bottom left of the sheet and Richmond at the bottom right, with Detroit at upper left and Albany at upper right.     Florida has been unavailable for far too long! We wanted to improve the area of coverage while converting the artwork to a GIS-based digital data base, so the area of coverage now includes Georgia, Alabama, part of Mississippi, and most of the Carolinas. This would be an excellent map to use on the way south (or north) along I-95 or I-85 through Atlanta or Augusta and south to the Gulf Coast. The Panhandle of Florida is on the same side of the sheet, with the second side being devoted to Florida south to the Keys. There isn't enough space to show many insets; just the Orlando area and a Florida map showing population by counties. Another innovation we have introduced is to print the map on waterproof paper, for durability as well as for use as an umbrella during sudden downpours! Als overzichtskaart goed te gebruiken. We call the map the Atlantic States guardedly for obvious reasons. First, the northeastern Atlantic States are missing and second, Florida's Caribbean coastline is included. Also, to cover an area so long, we had to go further inland than 'just' the coast, so all of Pennsylvania and West Virginia are included. The area of coverage of side A is Philadelphia/Pittsburg south to Augusta and Charleston. Side B continues south to the southernmost portion of Florida and west to Panama City. Inset maps of Orlando and Miami are included on this side as well. Both road and rail connections are shown, and distances between communities shown.     North of Norway exists one of the northernmost communities in the world, an archipelago of islands called Svalbard in Norwegian, and better known as Spitsbergen in English. Until now, it has only been available in map format from the Norwegian Arctic Institute, and then only with difficulty. Side one shows the various islands as an entity. There is only one town of any size in the islands, called Longyearbyen, although there is a more northerly town called Pyramiden and an isolated community on the west coast called Alesund. This is true high Arctic adventure travel; one does not come here unprepared! Most of the islands are uninhabited and largely ice-covered. Edge Island, for example, is a large nature reserve, and Prins Karl Forland is a national park. We have translated land area names into English and placed the Norwegian names in brackets, but have tried leaving the Norwegian names in place wherever possible to assist with local usage. Lets start with the Kamchatka peninsula itself. This is a very interesting adventure travel destination, famous for its geothermal geysers and its isolation from the rest of Russia. The northern mountain states of the USA are now the most recent portion of ITMB’s re-mapping of the USA for travel. We had to include a small portion of Washington State and Oregon, due to the shape of Idaho, but the double-sided sheet covers the three states with very little room left over. Side 1 stretches from the Alberta border to Salt Lake City, in Utah, and from west of Spokane to Helena, MT. The 2nd side covers from the Canadian border south to Cheyanne, and is essentially a map of Montana and Wyoming. As such, this is the most detailed map of this region of the USA ever published, and pretty much completes our mapping of the western half of the continental USA. We have also added a new feature – a list of the most popular sites – for those with limited time, showing such well-known features as Glacier National Park and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.     British Columbia is big! Gargantuan huge, in fact, although it is lightly populated. ITMB published a map of the more densely populated southern half of the province a number of years ago, and we have been asked to give the same emphasis to the northern half ever since. Here it is! Side 1 is of the western portion, including the Alaskan Panhandle, with the route followed by cruise ships heading north and clearly delineates the border between Canada and the USA that nearly erupted into warfare (54 40 or fight). It also shows the Stewart Highway heading north towards the Yukon, with its branch leading to Hyder, Alaska, the only place in the USA that uses Canadian money and does all its banking in Canada. The second side covers the eastern half of BC’s north, with the Alaska Highway starting in Dawson Creek and extending north to Fort Nelson before veering west into the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains to the Yukon border. The United States of America is a humongous travel attraction. Whether one is thinking of NYC or Disneyland, Hollywood or longhorn cattle, America is a fascinating place. ITMB specializes in mapping exotic travel destinations and in making even well-known places exotic. This is the first of a series of maps that we hope to publish on the USA in the years to come. We decided to start with two maps, East Half and West Half, because the size of the country and its complexity mitigated against doing one map for the entire half-continent. Even at the scale chosen, it was extremely difficult to portray all the parks, national monuments, battlefields, and touristic attractions that this fascinating country offers. One side covers the Atlantic seaboard from Maine to Florida, with insets of Washington, the Florida Keys, and Orlando/Disneyworld. The other side overlaps the previous side somewhat, but takes one as far west as Dallas and Omaha, and from the Canadian border to New Orleans and a bit of Mexico. Both sides show all Interstates (motorways) and toll roads (called Turnpikes), as well as all State highways and as many secondary roads as made sense to add. National and State heritage and conservation sites have been noted, as well as a tremendous number of parks and historic sites.
