    ITMB, being based in Vancouver, BC, understandably has a local/regional market for our map line. We have a map of Western Canada, as well as an atlas, a very nice map of BC itself, a map of the south half of BC, and a map of part of BC combined with Washington State. What we did not have, until now, was a map covering the most touristically-visited part of all of Canada – namely, the southern halves of both British Columbia and its neighbour, Alberta, with a small amount of Washington State, Idaho, and Montana (to assist those heading north and needing to know about border crossings). Therefore, ITMB is pleased to announce the release of Southern BC and Alberta. Side One covers BC from the US border (with a carry-on to Seattle) north to Prince George and east to the Alberta border, with a carry-on to Calgary. This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada.     The title of most popular vacation spot on earth is claimed by two cities – Orlando and Las Vegas – both in the States. Sorry London and Paris, but apparently you’re down the list a ways. We don’t want to play favourites, so we’re publishing both cities, with Orlando coming out first. When one thinks of Central Florida, most people probably think of Disneyworld or other theme parks, and orange groves. There are a LOT of things to see and do in this part of Florida, which is why it is so popular with visitors. Surprisingly, good maps of the region are few, as we discovered during the IMTa map conference there a couple of years ago. Frustrated by inaccurate freebie maps and discouraged by the simplistic maps available from commercial firms, we’ve tried to create a ‘break-through’ map, combining the various attractions immediately surrounding Orlando itself, such as a detailed map of the Disneyland complex, the Universal Studios’ amazing theme area, and the hotel strip along Interstate 4,…

    The very name Muscat and Oman entices one! The peninsula at the access point to the Persian/Arabian Gulf sounds very exotic – and it is! This double-sided map focuses on the city and region of Muscat on side one at a detailed scale, noting the Grand Mosque, the Mutrah Souk, and the Royal Opera House as well as showing hotels, shopping areas, and other sites of touristic interest. Muscat used to be a British protectorate, but is now part of Oman, albeit physically separated from it by a portion of the UAE. The country fills side 2. Oman is portrayed as a north-south alignment, as it is long and not particularly wide, and nicely fills the sheet, with an inset of Salalah, close to the Yemeni border. Connections to nearby Abu Dhabi and Dubai are also shown. Oman is a haven of peaceful co-existence, and tourists are welcome, so this map is designed to encourage visitors

United States of America (USA) Travel Reference Map has been mapped before, but the USA is a huge country, extremely developed, and almost impossible to show on a map without over-simplification. Most commercial maps use small sheets of paper and print single-sided, making it impossible to show this vast country to advantage. Well, Lan’s been hard at work developing a ‘proper’ traveller’s aid to navigating around the USA, and here it is. We printed it on an exceptionally large sheet of paper, 39” tall by 54” wide (our normal printing size is 27”x39”). To do this, we merged our four existing databases into one, then split them so that the west side is on one side and the east side on the other. What results is a very large sheet, but a map at a VERY good scale. We were able to fit in 6,765 urban areas, all the Inte…

ITMB is pleased to release two more state maps, this time of Montana on one side, and adjacent Idaho on the other side. Montana prides itself on being the ‘blue sky’ state. Due to its high elevation, the sky does appear to be a darker shade of blue than is common in areas closer to the ocean. The state is lightly populated, so much of its attractiveness rests with natural features, such as Glacier National Park on the Canadian border, and Yellowstone National Park on the Wyoming border. The state is also perfect camping country, and our map includes dozens of authorized campsites. It also includes the national heritage site of Little Big Horn, where Lt. Colonel Custer and the US 7th Cavalry were massacred after foolishly attacking a vastly larger encampment of Sioux and Cheyenne first nations people under the leadership of Sitting Bull. I use the word ‘country’ in its truest sense, as Wales was invaded and taken over by the English centuries ago. Regardless, the Welsh language and Welsh culture continue to flourish, although English is commonly spoken. We have visited Wales on several occasions and find that the attractions are so numerous that we could never see them all. There are too many castles to count, but some of the best preserved in the British Isles are in Wales, notable Caernarfon, but nearby Harlech is a World Heritage Site. St, David’s must be one of the smallest and loveliest cathedrals in the world, and Tintern Abbey ruins among the most poignant anywhere. This is a brand new title for ITMB. Denver, the ‘mile-high’ city on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, is a vibrant, fairly modern city. It is the state capital, and the gold-coated dome of the legislative building highlights the wealth and strength of the state. The Denver Zoo is becoming one of the great attractions of the city, as are the Center for Performing Arts and the Museum of Science and Nature. Larimer Square is the focal point for entertainment, and Coors Field for sports. Our map shows a wide-ranging number of accommodations and eateries, and notes all points of interest. The State of Colorado map fills the reverse side of the sheet and, due to the positioning of the state’s boundaries, nicely fills the 40x28 sheet size of the map. In conjunction with several cruise ship lines, we have prepared a map of the South Pacific Ocean, which extends southwards from Hawai'i to the southern tip of New Zealand and eastwards from central Australia/Papua New Guinea to the Pitcairn Islands. Thus, it does not include the popular South East Asia and China coast routes. We think this has to change at a time when 25,000,000 people are travelling by cruise ships. At the same time, we must keep coverage area relevant for those end users of the artwork. Met name de natuurkundige apecten van het land of streek worden heel duidelijk weergegeven.  One of the world’s great travel adventures is sailing through the Panama Canal, which we did last year (see cover photo). Panama itself is a large enough country that the canal, which is visited annually by millions of passengers, cannot be shown in meaningful detail. So, whether one is on board one of the many cruise ships squeezing into the Miraflores Locks or are a visitor ashore watching, the canal is a great attraction. The map is double-sided, with central Panama (the part most visited) filling side one. Side two is divided in half along the central fold. A very detailed map of Panama City fills the left side, and the first-ever map of the canal itself fills the other. This is a marvelously portrayed rendition of the most important canal in the world. Even at this scale, the locks themselves are thin lines on the sheet, but they’re there.
