The place names index is formidable, but England in particular is a series of little villages, so it has been very difficult to decide what to include and what to leave out. This map is showing motorways, divided carriageways, all A & B highways, railway lines, airports, historic sites and touristic attractions, parks and gardens, and just about everything that we could fit on to the page to provide users with a detailed, usable map. We have been able to fit all of southern England/Wales as far north as Chester/Lincoln on side A and with a little overlap, from those cities north to the well over the Scottish border, up to Perth/Dundee filling side B. Most visitors to the UK fly into one of London's four airports and combine a visit to the city with an opportunity to travel to various destinations within striking distance of London. England is so incredibly rich in heritage and scenic attractions that it is extremely difficult to portray the country as a map of the entire entity. As a result, England lends itself nicely to be divided into a central/northern portion and a southern portion. To fit areas as diverse as Cornwall and Norwich on one sheet, one needs to have a vertical frame, with Devon/Cornwall up to the top of Wales on one side and Wiltshire to Kent up to York (admittedly, not normally considered to be part of 'southern', but vertically, that's what happens. ITMB finds the UK to be a never-ending source of maps needing to be prepared, such as this one of Cardiff and Wales. Cardiff is the capital of Wales, and is also an international access point to the UK; a map seems desirable. The city is based at the mouth of the River Taff, with most touristic points being concentrated in the harbour area, the city centre, and a concentration of eateries along Albany Road. Cardiff is shaped by two parallel motorways; the A4232close to the waterfront, and the A48 near the northern extremities. Both are included in our map, which also shows historic sites, hotels, and tourist amenities. This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada.     As technology improves, we are able to produce more detailed maps than was previously possible. Such is the case with Ireland, a part of the world consisting of two countries divided by religion and history. Preparing a map of Ireland as a double-sided map means cutting the island into two geographic portions. Side 1 covers the northern half. This includes the portion known as Northern Ireland, or Ulster, and a fair portion of the Republic of Ireland, or Eire; essentially everything north of Dublin and west to Counties Mayo and Galway. Side 2 covers the southern half of the island from just north of Dublin to the outer tips of County Kerry. It also includes a nice inset map of central Dublin. Naturally, all motorways and roads are included, as are touristic attractions, camping/caravan sites, ferry terminals, and Top Attractions. This is a very detailed travel map of the island, printed on waterproof paper for durability. We had great fun driving around Ireland researching this map. It…

    Georgia, the country and not the American state, is a very nice, but threatened country of great historical importance. Bordered on the west by the Black Sea, on the north by Russia, and on the east by Azerbaijan, and with an ill-defined border with Turkey on the west, Georgians must be nimble to retain their independence. Only with neighbouring Armenia does Georgia enjoy relatively good relations. Historically, Georgia is a Christian enclave that dates back to the earliest days of Christianity, and its many churches are major touristic attraction. This map portrays the country as accurately as is possible, showing the expanding network of motorways, major churches, castles, touristic sites, and regrettably, areas of contention with both Russia and Azerbaijan. The reverse side shows a full-sized city map of Tbilisi, the capital. This is the first time that the city has been portrayed in such detail.     Nordisk Korthandel has published a new Tourist Map of Denmark and Major Cities with The Marguerite Route.   As a newly added feature the Tourist map of Denmark includes the scenic Marguerite Route.   The Marguerite route is a 3600 km long route through the danish landscape, and was opened in 1991 by Queen Margrethe of Denmark. The route runs through beautiful regions of Denmark, and in most places it is possible to cycle or walk along the route. Most of the route is situated on small roads, and therefore it is not the quickest or shortest way from point A to B, but instead it is an invitation to visit the many attractions, that you will find in Denmark. It runs through the danish mainland and is therefore not covering islands like Bornholm and Samsø. If you want to leave the mainland, you can find information, on ferry routes that depart from danish harbours, on the map.   The route uses the daisy flower as a symbol, and you will find it on the road signs, that are placed alongside the…

This is a new title for ITMB, providing detailed coverage of almost all of what most of us consider to be the Scandinavian countries. Only the southernmost portions of Denmark had to be left off. The map is double-sided, with Denmark and most of Norway and Sweden on one side and their balances and Finland on the reverse side. The road network, particularly the motorways and A-type roads shown up very well. Secondary roads show well and also are easy to see. Rail lines are present as well as ferry routes, of which there are many. The area of Scandinavia is so large in the European context that little attention has been paid to the region. When mapping a large area such as this is, it is difficult to show every detail. We have done our best and included all world heritage sites, major churches, castles, some campsites, and as many touristic attractions as could be fitted…

Upon a peaceful transition to independence as Botswana, it has evolved into a democratic and peaceful country. Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodeisa, is a failed state, although potentially, Zimbabwe could dominate tourism if governmental affairs were orderly. This map focuses on Botswana simply because that country is a beacon of orderly pleasantness in the continent; well run, routistacally well developed, with good infrastructure, and close to the game preserves of both South Africa and Zimbabwe. In one sense, this is a brand new map, in that the artwork is all brand new. In another sense, it is our map of Hokkaid re-worked into a more marketable format. In any case, it is a very much-needed sectional map of that portion of Japan from Tokyo northwards. Hokkaido is actually one of the most interesting parts of Japan to visit. The island was opened to settlement only after the Ameicans forced Japan to allow contacts with foreign countries in 1868, thanks to Admiral Peary and Gunboat Diplomacy. Hokkaido has been relatively untouched by Japan’s rush to economic dominance, so is the country’s skiing capital in winter and the part of Japan most similar to America. An inset map of Sapporo is included. The other side shows the main island of the country from Nagoya and Toyama (which are considerably west of Tokyo)…

I use the word ‘country’ in its truest sense, as Wales was invaded and taken over by the English centuries ago. Regardless, the Welsh language and Welsh culture continue to flourish, although English is commonly spoken. We have visited Wales on several occasions and find that the attractions are so numerous that we could never see them all. There are too many castles to count, but some of the best preserved in the British Isles are in Wales, notable Caernarfon, but nearby Harlech is a World Heritage Site. St, David’s must be one of the smallest and loveliest cathedrals in the world, and Tintern Abbey ruins among the most poignant anywhere. We took Johnny to Abergavenny for lunch in March, not that it made any difference; he just pined for a McDonalds. This map is double-sided, with Wales on one side and the West Country (southwest England) graces the other side. Excellent coverage of Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset is provided, along with a fair portion of Dorset and Wiltshire. The eastern extreme of the map is Salisbury/Swindon, so a lot of ground is still being covered. The peculiar way that motorways are designated means that ‘true’ motorways are shown in blue while equally good non-motorways are in green casing, with not a tinker’s difference between them. My own favorite place is Mousehole, on Mount’s Bay; Tintagel ranks a close second. The map is loaded with touristic attractions; both well-known and more local. For something really unusual, visit Hay-on-Wye, west of Hereford. It is actually in England, smack on the border, and its claim to fame is that it is the world’s largest concentration of bookstores – an amazing place! This was obviously a fun map to make, as it includes so many ‘favorite’ places. This map will be invaluable for anyone visiting Wales!
