Licenses to fly into the country from a dozen cities have already been approved; 60 more are awaiting approval. All are for flights into Havana and Varadero airports – in other words, the western half of the country. ITMB already has an exceptionally good map of the entire country. We also have a separate map of Havana. This map expands the scale and opens the information for the western half of the island nation as a double-sided map, with the portion west of Havana (La Habana) to Pinar del Rio province in the far west and south to the Isla de la Juventud (better known, but mis-named, as the Bay of Pigs Invasion Site).     This is a brand new title from ITMB. Portland is the largest city in the American state of Oregon. It is not the capital; that distinction belongs to Salem, about 50 miles to the south, but Portland is an actual sea-going port, although it is a hundred miles away from the ocean. It is situated on the majestic Columbia River, which at one time formed the border between British-controlled Canada and the emerging United States. That changed after 1842, with the Oregon Treaty, under which both governments agreed to "share" the territory. At that time, the British capital was Astoria, a lovely town at the mouth of the Columbia, but the Governor, realizing that sharing with the Americans meant capitulation to the Americans, moved the capital north to Victoria, on what was then designated a separate colony. To me, the north side is the most interesting, covering the portion of Laos from Vientiane, the capital, to the Chinese border. Detailed inset maps of Vientiane and Louang Prabang, the temple city, are included on this side, as are bits of both Thailand and Vietnam. The south portion fills the other side of the sheet, including a goodly portion of Vietnam, showing all border crossings. Much of Thailand has had to be obscured, unfortunately, to make room for the place names index, but the immediate border areas are shown, including the rail line south from Vientiane. In an interesting departure from previous ITMB maps, the back cover consists of a detailed inset map of Vientiane at 1:16,000 scale, making it easy to use in…

The city is squeezed in between mountain ranges and, the entire city stretches from north (on the right-hand side of the map) to the south. The "bottom" of the map is, actually the eastern portion. A regional inset map clarifies the situation. The street network is clearly shown, along with the rapid line bus way and the city's Metro. The Old Town is perhaps the most interesting portion of the city for visitors and is on the left-hand portion of the map. This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada.     Australia was one of the first countries ITMB published, back in the 1980s, albeit a licensed version. Our own original artwork was completed in the mid-1990s, but until recently, we have not focused on sectional maps of the country based on individual states. In 2019, we published Brisbane and Queensland, and Sydney and New South Wales. Now, we are issuing the ‘middle’ states of South Australia and Northern Territory to provide better coverage of these important parts of Australia at a better scale than a country map could provide. South Australia can be thought of as having two parts; the fertile farming economy surrounding Adelaide in the south and the much more arid northern portion. The road network in the south tends to be well developed, with paved roads going more or less east-west to NSW and WA. Northerly roads tend to be gravel or dirt, such as the Birdville Track, and the north-westerly roads tend to pass through land ceded to aboriginals and require permits. Northern Terri…

The north is also very different from the south, so we decided to expand our data base for India and publish a map covering India from Hyderabad and Mumbai south to the southern tip of the country. As the country economically modernizes, it becomes better known. As a country, India is fascinating and a great travel experience. I well remember visiting the temple city of Tiruchirappalli many years ago and travelling by local trains (an experience that tends to sear itself on to ones memory cells!) Interesting-sounding names fill the map: Madurai, Kochi, Bangalore, Nagpur, and Pune; the map reeks of adventure and exoticism!

ITMB, after only thirty years on the go, finally gets around to publishing a map of Canada. When we first started mapping, there was a pressing need for good maps of Central and South America, then of Africa, then etc etc and we never found time to concentrate on our own country until fairly recently. This map was prepared by Natural Resources Canada and is, as a result, as accurate a map as one could hope to have. We are very proud of it, and very pleased to be able to use such top-rate cartography. The map covers all of the land mass of Canada, from its southernmost point to the top of Ellesmere Island and from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. It’s an excellent map, but I’m going to give one proviso. Canada is the second-largest country on the face of the planet and there is no way that a single-sided sheet can portray…

    Brazil, or more properly, Brasil, is a difficult country to map as a country, in that most of the developed areas are in the relatively small extreme south of the country. The vast region of the Amazon Basin is lightly populated and is not easy to access. Our solution has been to portray the south portion on one side at a detailed scale, to enable such locations as Rio and Sao Paulo a better scale to help travellers, while mapping the north at a respectable but more limited scale on the That said, one still needs both sides of the map, as Brasilia, the capital, falls on the north side other side of the sheet. I should also note that roads north of Brasilia tend to be less well-paved than those in the south. The  shape of the country also presents mapping difficulties, in that little room is available for inset maps. We have been able to include a good inset of central Rio, but visitors to Brasil would be well-advised to take along ITM maps of Rio and Sao Paulo for an enjoyable exploration. The map is printed on waterproof paper, both for durability and because of the humid climate, and includes a list of the top attractions.
