    This edition of France continues a developing strain of European country maps for ITMB – placing an emphasis on train travel. Tourism is changing, or rather, is growing exponentially as more and more people from Asia visit France. Most of these visitors, and for that matter, most visitors from North America, prefer to travel around France by using the excellent rail network, rather than by road. Most map publishers have removed rail lines from their maps in order to concentrate on those people travelling by car. Our map shows the road network in good detail, but our difference is that we show the rail network in excellent detail as well. As a country, France is one of the most popular destinations in Europe, and for good reason. Whether one is interested in the chateaux gracing the Loire Valley or the great cathedrals of Chartres or Reims, or the massive defensive fortresses of bygone years, France offers something for everyone.     The shape of the UK makes it difficult to map logically. The term South East, within crowded England, is generally more restrictive than is appropriate for a map. Our definition of SE is from the English Channel north to the northern tip of East Anglia and west to Portsmouth/Reading/Peterborough. This occupies side one of the sheet. Side two consists of that complex portion of England generally called ‘The Midlands’ stretching from Cambridge/Peterborough west to the Welsh border and from Luton/Gloucester north to Manchester/Grimsby. London is, of course, prominent, but only as a main roads map. This is the most recent sectional map of the UK that ITMB has published, and was necessitated by the realization that, to see England properly, one needs a detailed enough map to show rail lines, motorways, A-type highways and B-type secondary roads, but also the tertiary level of road joining villages. ITMB, after only thirty years on the go, finally gets around to publishing a map of Canada. When we first started mapping, there was a pressing need for good maps of Central and South America, then of Africa, then etc etc and we never found time to concentrate on our own country until fairly recently. This map was prepared by Natural Resources Canada and is, as a result, as accurate a map as one could hope to have. We are very proud of it, and very pleased to be able to use such top-rate cartography. The map covers all of the land mass of Canada, from its southernmost point to the top of Ellesmere Island and from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. It’s an excellent map, but I’m going to give one proviso. Canada is the second-largest country on the face of the planet and there is no way that a single-sided sheet can portray …

    Europe is dotted with mini-states that exist solely for historic reasons but are fiercely independent. Liechtenstein, surrounded by Switzerland on its west and south and Austria on its other borders, is such a state. It is larger and more diverse than many imagine and is quite a popular ski resort region. Side 1 is a detailed map of the principality, framed on the west by the Rhine River and a bit of Switzerland and on the east by Austria. Most development occurs in the Rhine Valley in a north-south direction, dominated by the capital city of Vaduz. There are five access points from Switzerland across the Rhine, one from the south, and two from Austria in the north. The ski haven of Malbun is prominently shown, and the scale of the map is detailed enough to name every major street. This also enabled us the opportunity to include schools, shopping areas, post offices, and churches, as well as a wide range of eating establishments. Walking/hiking trails have also been included. This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada. This is a new title for ITMB, providing detailed coverage of almost all of what most of us consider to be the Scandinavian countries. Only the southernmost portions of Denmark had to be left off. The map is double-sided, with Denmark and most of Norway and Sweden on one side and their balances and Finland on the reverse side. The road network, particularly the motorways and A-type roads shown up very well. Secondary roads show well and also are easy to see. Rail lines are present as well as ferry routes, of which there are many. The area of Scandinavia is so large in the European context that little attention has been paid to the region. When mapping a large area such as this is, it is difficult to show every detail. We have done our best and included all world heritage sites, major churches, castles, some campsites, and as many touristic attractions as could be fitted…

    This is a new title for ITMB, and continues our expanded coverage of the United Kingdom. Many publishers carry a map of Great Britain (or of the UK), and a few might have one just for England and Wales. We travel extensively through Britain and usually find such maps too generalized for usability. All parts of the UK seem to be blessed with interesting places for a visitor to explore – parish churches, cathedrals, fortresses or castle ruins, market towns, lavish country estates, fabulous gardens, seaside resort towns – the list is endless. The only way to show tertiary-level roads leading to interesting tiny villages with fascinating names, and to portray the wealth of attractions available for the visitor is to divide the UK into logical units, which we did earlier with south East and South West England and now continue to the Scottish border with this map. I-90 does pass through Chicago on its westward route, but only because Lake Michigan forces it southward.     This map has been a long time in development preparation. The data for a sophisticated country like Switzerland needs delicate handling to do justice to this lovely country. We did not want to do 'just' another road map, similar to those available from a variety of European publishers. Our version shows the physical reality of this mountainous country to good advantage without obscuring the places of interest to visitors. The road/rail infrastructure within the country is well shown with perhaps more villages being included than would normally be the case. The road network in surrounding countries has been simplified to focus attention on Switzerland itself. Touristic points, such as castles, fortresses, ski areas, and museums have been included, but we removed a lot of data, such as gas stations, schools, post offices, most churches and police stations in an effort to avoiding cluttering the map with an over-load of information. It focusses on the western half of the European land mass at a much better scale than would be possible for all of Europe. Even at this scale, showing the rail lines and the major roads results in a map with a lot of information on it, but it meets the needs of those travelling around Europe by rail, which is its primary market. It can also be used by those driving, although it would be better for vehicle users to rely on individual country maps. Side 1 covers the British Isles, the Low Countries, Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, most of Poland, and southern Scandinavia. The second side covers the Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Austria, Hungary, and the southern portion of Germany. Trains tend to be used by travellers in Europe for longer trips, say from Frankfurt to Rome, and for this reason our new map should find a good market. There has not been enough room on this map to show many touristically important sites, but where room exists, we have added UNESCO World Heritage sites, major churches, and most international airports. Coverage includes major ferry routes and includes the islands of Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Sardinia, Elba, and Corsica, Sicily, and Malta. As the EU evolves, passenger rail service is increasingly becoming a pan-European reality, but German trains running on French lines and Italian trains going north into Austria. This is a timely map; coming out at the beginning of a truly European rail system.
