    The shape of the UK makes it difficult to map logically. The term South East, within crowded England, is generally more restrictive than is appropriate for a map. Our definition of SE is from the English Channel north to the northern tip of East Anglia and west to Portsmouth/Reading/Peterborough. This occupies side one of the sheet. Side two consists of that complex portion of England generally called ‘The Midlands’ stretching from Cambridge/Peterborough west to the Welsh border and from Luton/Gloucester north to Manchester/Grimsby. London is, of course, prominent, but only as a main roads map. This is the most recent sectional map of the UK that ITMB has published, and was necessitated by the realization that, to see England properly, one needs a detailed enough map to show rail lines, motorways, A-type highways and B-type secondary roads, but also the tertiary level of road joining villages. The reason for this sectional map is to provide additional space to show 25% more detail than our map of all of Scotland can provide. The north of Scotland is my favourite part of the country, but there isn’t much there except heather and single-lane tracks across treeless moors. The South, like it or not, is where most of Scotland’s four million people live and where most of the castles, palaces, battlefields, parks, and touristic attractions are located.     This is a brand new title for ITMB and an attempt to portray a changing travel landscape in a mapping format. Eco-tourism is a rapidly growing activity, with enormous potential. At the same time, governments are seeking to reduce carbon pollution by encouraging train travel, so ITMB is climbing aboard the movement by publishing a map encouraging train travel while still retaining the road network and noting all the long-distance bike routes in southern France by designated number. This is, by its scale, a generalized map of that portion of France south of Poitiers or Lyon to the Mediterranean, so is more of a regional map showing biking opportunities than a detailed trail map. Nevertheless, it is an excellent map on waterproof paper showing cycling routes and tertiary roads that are suitable for recreational exploration.     This edition of France continues a developing strain of European country maps for ITMB – placing an emphasis on train travel. Tourism is changing, or rather, is growing exponentially as more and more people from Asia visit France. Most of these visitors, and for that matter, most visitors from North America, prefer to travel around France by using the excellent rail network, rather than by road. Most map publishers have removed rail lines from their maps in order to concentrate on those people travelling by car. Our map shows the road network in good detail, but our difference is that we show the rail network in excellent detail as well. As a country, France is one of the most popular destinations in Europe, and for good reason. Whether one is interested in the chateaux gracing the Loire Valley or the great cathedrals of Chartres or Reims, or the massive defensive fortresses of bygone years, France offers something for everyone. This is a brilliant map of both England and Wales, showing the entire 'country' in a double-sided format. The place names index is formidable, but England in particular is a series of little villages, so it has been very difficult to decide what to include and what to leave out. This map is showing motorways, divided carriageways, all A & B highways, railway lines, airports, historic sites and touristic attractions, parks and gardens, and just about everything that we could fit on to the page to provide users with a detailed, usable map. We have been able to fit all of southern England/Wales as far north as Chester/Lincoln on side A and with a little overlap, from those cities north to the well over the Scottish border, up to Perth/Dundee filling side B.     Italy is a very densely populated country, requiring sectional maps to portray its complex road/rail network in sufficient detail to make sense. This is a brand new title for ITMB, covering the central portion of the peninsula from Naples north to Florence on side one, and includes a large inset map of Sardinia. Side two covers the vast expanse of the north of the country, from the high alpine valleys of D’Aosta and Trentino to the plains of northern Italy and the coastal provinces of the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines. The immediate border areas of France and Switzerland are included, but the extensive plate name index covers most of those countries. Motorways (in blue) tend to be toll highways. Multi-lane highways (in magenta) and principal highways (in green) tend to be non-toll. The red lines are ordinary two-lane roadways, and tend to go through villages every kilometer or so and to follow mountainous contours. The Canadian province of Ontario is intimidatingly large. It is also mostly tundra with extremely few settlements and few roads; in fact, the geographic centre of Ontario is about 1,500 kms north of the nearest road. The very first map I prepared, at age 10, was of Ontario; and it took me six weeks to trace all the lakes. My point is that the developed portion of the province is a much smaller wedge of fertile ground south of the mineral belt of the Great Canadian Shield. This double-sided map focusses on the area south of Sudbury and North Bay and expands the scale to a much more useful purpose for most users. Imagine Detroit in the southwest corner of the map, with Highway 401 joining it to London and Toronto and a branch motorway cutting across to Buffalo.     This is a new title for ITMB, and continues our expanded coverage of the United Kingdom. Many publishers carry a map of Great Britain (or of the UK), and a few might have one just for England and Wales. We travel extensively through Britain and usually find such maps too generalized for usability. All parts of the UK seem to be blessed with interesting places for a visitor to explore – parish churches, cathedrals, fortresses or castle ruins, market towns, lavish country estates, fabulous gardens, seaside resort towns – the list is endless. The only way to show tertiary-level roads leading to interesting tiny villages with fascinating names, and to portray the wealth of attractions available for the visitor is to divide the UK into logical units, which we did earlier with south East and South West England and now continue to the Scottish border with this map. Coverage is from Birmingham/Peterborough north to York on side one and from Lancaster north to the Scottish border at Berwick-upon-Tweed. As the border angles in a southwesterly angle, the map also includes much of the Scottish border region as far west as Dumfries. Being an area regularly serviced by rail (the world’s original railway line is on the map), we have emphasized rail connections for end users. However, we have also included roads for those driving or cycling.
