At the moment, the Chinese authorities seem to be clamping down on tourism, due to simmering unrest. However, the country, or self-governing province of China is a beautiful place and deserves a good map. It is extremely difficult to get updating information on Tibet; we've done our best, but this is very much a work in progress. The hundreds of islands making up the island nation of Indonesia make a double-sided map inevitable in order to show any significant amount of detail. Side 1 shows the western half, starting with Sumatra in the upper left and including Java and most of the island of Borneo (Kalimantan Province to the Indonesians). This side also includes a large inset map of central Jakarta (for better detail see our separate map of the city); ditto for Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa islands are in the lower right portion of the map, and most of Malaysia and all of Singapore are included, simply because they are there.     Turkey is a big country. Most visitors concentrate on Istanbul and the Izmir Coast, which is a shame as there are so many other interesting parts of the country to visit. This map covers the western third of the country as a double-sided map, covering from the Greek/Bulgarian border south to the Mediterranean and east to Eregli and Antalya in the east. Naturally, at a better scale, roads and road conditions can be shown to better advantage, and the ferry routes from Istanbul make more sense. The topography is now showing as contouring more easily, and we have been able to add the next layer of villages. The scale is still not appropriate for showing minor roads and tracks, but we have included as many as we feel we can. The map is printed on durable plastic paper, so will stand up to the rigours of travel quite well.     Turkey is a fascinating country; so much potential, and seemingly unable to focus on progress as opposed to ideology. Touristically, the country is quite safe, but internal politics are as divided here as in Egypt (and seemingly every Muslim country) between secularists (if it is proper to call them that) who want a 'normal' country with a division between secular and religious affairs and those wanting a more traditional religious society where religious values shape the society. Our first edition sold out in a little more than a year, which is pretty amazing in itself, and we have made major improvements to this edition to maintain its popularity. The biggest change is that we have more strongly emphasized the major road network, as most visitors stay on the well-travelled routes around the country, rather than taking back roads to small villages. Expanding the area of coverage benefits visitors combining Paraguay and Bolivia into one trip. The first side covers Bolivia from La Paz south to the Paraguayan border, with inset maps of Potosi and Santa Cruz. The second side concentrates on Paraguay itself, with inset maps of Asuncion, the Asuncion region, and northern Paraguay. Small bits of bordering countries also are included. Road connections within Paraguay have been shown to good advantage. To me, the north side is the most interesting, covering the portion of Laos from Vientiane, the capital, to the Chinese border. Detailed inset maps of Vientiane and Louang Prabang, the temple city, are included on this side, as are bits of both Thailand and Vietnam. The south portion fills the other side of the sheet, including a goodly portion of Vietnam, showing all border crossings. Much of Thailand has had to be obscured, unfortunately, to make room for the place names index, but the immediate border areas are shown, including the rail line south from Vientiane.
