The part of Russia east of the Ural Mountains is vast; there is no other word to describe the enormity of this region of grassland and tundra. Anyone who has visited Tahiti retains fond memories of a wonderful Polynesian paradise. This map shows the major islands of French Polynesia as a series of large insets on Side 1. An overall inset map showing the many islands is also shown, but for showing detail, one must expand the individual islands. The largest one is the volcanic Tahiti Nui, with the capital city of Pape’ete (or Papeete in English), for which a detailed inset map is included. Most visitors stay in the vicinity of Papeete, along the coast. We show several popular resorts. There is a good circular road around the island’s shoreline, but no roads in the interior. The island is joined to another, called Tahiti Iti, or Little Tahiti, and roads extend partway around this less-developed part of the combined island. Most of the other islands are rarely visited, although they have resorts, beaches, and a lifestyle of their own. The artwork has been digitally-prepared, and this time printed double-sided to achieve a MUCH better scale. The southern portion remains relatively unexplored and undeveloped, with few roads and only the occasional settlement, and the northern coastal region shows the road network very well. For some reason, Bosnia Herzegovina has never attracted the attention of firms publishing maps. Understandably, since the breakup of Yugoslavia, the entire region has been somewhat unattractive for visitors. Also, Bosnia by itself is difficult to map, due to its shape. However, we have visited the country several times and find it to be interesting, friendly, and attractive. We were particularly impressed by Montenegro. Since it broke away from Serbia, this country has moved forward quickly. It uses the Euro as a currency, has lovely Mediterranean Sea resorts along its coast, and is a progressive country tying its future to the rest of Europe as a future EU member. The roads in both countries are good, and the damage done by civil in-fighting largely a thing of the past. Both countries are well-worth a visit. The map also includes Kosovo. Brazil, or more properly, Brasil, is a difficult country to map as a country, in that most of the developed areas are in the relatively small extreme south of the country. The vast region of the Amazon Basin is lightly populated and is not easy to access. Our solution has been to portray the south portion on one side at a detailed scale, to enable such locations as Rio and Sao Paulo a better scale to help travellers, while mapping the north at a respectable but more limited scale on the That said, one still needs both sides of the map, as Brasilia, the capital, falls on the north side other side of the sheet. I should also note that roads north of Brasilia tend to be less well-paved than those in the south. The very name Muscat and Oman entices one! The peninsula at the access point to the Persian/Arabian Gulf sounds very exotic – and it is! This double-sided map focuses on the city and region of Muscat on side one at a detailed scale, noting the Grand Mosque, the Mutrah Souk, and the Royal Opera House as well as showing hotels, shopping areas, and other sites of touristic interest. Muscat used to be a British protectorate, but is now part of Oman, albeit physically separated from it by a portion of the UAE. The country fills side 2. Oman is portrayed as a north-south alignment, as it is long and not particularly wide, and nicely fills the sheet, with an inset of Salalah, close to the Yemeni border. ITMB is very pleased to release its first-ever map of the Baltic country of Lithuania, which occupies Side 1 of this double-sided map. It is bordered by Latvia on its north, the Russian enclave of Kalingrad on its southeast, and Poland and Belarus on its south and east. It is now on the front lines of tension between Russia and its neighbours, as are all the Baltic states. It is also a valued member of both NATO and the EU, and as such is easy to access from either Poland or Latvia. Lithuania fronts on to the Baltic Sea with a major port at Klaipeda (formerly Memel), with its capital being Vilnius. Historically, the country has suffered German and Russian invasions during the 20th century, the last of which resulted in the country losing its independence completely by being absorbed into the Russian Empire in the latter stages of WW2. North of Norway exists one of the northernmost communities in the world, an archipelago of islands called Svalbard in Norwegian, and better known as Spitsbergen in English. Until now, it has only been available in map format from the Norwegian Arctic Institute, and then only with difficulty. Side one shows the various islands as an entity. There is only one town of any size in the islands, called Longyearbyen, although there is a more northerly town called Pyramiden and an isolated community on the west coast called Alesund. This is true high Arctic adventure travel; one does not come here unprepared! Most of the islands are uninhabited and largely ice-covered. Edge Island, for example, is a large nature reserve, and Prins Karl Forland is a national park. We have translated land area names into English and placed the Norwegian names in brackets, but have tried leaving the Norwegian names in place wherever possible to assist with local usage.
