Als overzichtskaart goed te gebruiken   We're introducing a map of the US Southwest States, notably most of California and Nevada, Arizona, most of Utah, and the western third of New Mexico and Colorado. Our regional series is at 1:1M scale. This results in instances where the name of the map may differ from the common perception. In US parlance, the 'Southwest' is often thought to be Arizona and New Mexico, whereas in reality it is southern California, Nevada, and Arizona. If one includes New Mexico, the square sheet of paper has to go so far north that one ends up including Denver. This is our compromise and we'll figure out how to deal with Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Oklahoma a bit further down the line.     ITMB is very pleased to release its first-ever map of the Baltic country of Lithuania, which occupies Side 1 of this double-sided map. It is bordered by Latvia on its north, the Russian enclave of Kalingrad on its southeast, and Poland and Belarus on its south and east. It is now on the front lines of tension between Russia and its neighbours, as are all the Baltic states. It is also a valued member of both NATO and the EU, and as such is easy to access from either Poland or Latvia. Lithuania fronts on to the Baltic Sea with a major port at Klaipeda (formerly Memel), with its capital being Vilnius. Historically, the country has suffered German and Russian invasions during the 20th century, the last of which resulted in the country losing its independence completely by being absorbed into the Russian Empire in the latter stages of WW2.     The USA is a vast and wonderful land to explore. ITMB is steadily increasing our coverage of this important travel destination and this month concentrates on the State of Wyoming, with a detailed travel map on one side, including small portions of adjacent states of Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, and Idaho. The state is lightly populated, with Cheyanne as its capital and main city. Interstates 80 and 90 both traverse the state, with Interstate 25 being the only north-south motorway. Yellowstone National Park occupies the northwest corner of the state and also occupies the second side of the sheet with an extremely detailed map. Yellowstone is the first area in the world to be proclaimed as a national protected area (Banff was second), and Yellowstone remains the paramount preserved wilderness environment in the world. By the shape of the USA, the New England States fill most of one side of the map, but New York City and Philadelphia are included as well as a goodly portion of New York State. The second side covers the rest of the state, plus all of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and most of Ohio, West Virginia and the northern portion of Virginia. In terms of cities, Cincinnati is at the bottom left of the sheet and Richmond at the bottom right, with Detroit at upper left and Albany at upper right. The first side concentrates on the northern portion of the state, and the other side, the more densely-developed southern half. The map includes a listing of the state’s top attractions, and notes al major touristic attractions.     Europe is dotted with mini-states that exist solely for historic reasons but are fiercely independent. Liechtenstein, surrounded by Switzerland on its west and south and Austria on its other borders, is such a state. It is larger and more diverse than many imagine and is quite a popular ski resort region. Side 1 is a detailed map of the principality, framed on the west by the Rhine River and a bit of Switzerland and on the east by Austria. Most development occurs in the Rhine Valley in a north-south direction, dominated by the capital city of Vaduz. There are five access points from Switzerland across the Rhine, one from the south, and two from Austria in the north. The ski haven of Malbun is prominently shown, and the scale of the map is detailed enough to name every major street. The northern mountain states of the USA are now the most recent portion of ITMB’s re-mapping of the USA for travel. We had to include a small portion of Washington State and Oregon, due to the shape of Idaho, but the double-sided sheet covers the three states with very little room left over. Side 1 stretches from the Alberta border to Salt Lake City, in Utah, and from west of Spokane to Helena, MT. The 2nd side covers from the Canadian border south to Cheyanne, and is essentially a map of Montana and Wyoming. As such, this is the most detailed map of this region of the USA ever published, and pretty much completes our mapping of the western half of the continental USA. We have also added a new feature – a list of the most popular sites – for those with limited time, showing such well-known features as Glacier National Park and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. ITMB is pleased to announce the newest addition to our range of titles on the USA. Increasingly, we are developing our artwork to cover the larger states attractively and comprehensively, but also, we hope sensibly. Texas and Oklahoma share a common heritage of having been formed out of land taken from others through the long-held policy of Manifest Destiny. Today, Texas is the second largest State in the union (after Alaska), and is the only State to have previously been an independent country. It also includes the oldest urban area in the USA, Presidio, founded by the Spaniards to guard the ford over the Rio Grande. Because of its shape, and the natural proximity of the State of Oklahoma along its northern edge, combining the two States just made sense. The map is presented double-sided (top half/bottom half) on waterproof paper that is durable and tear-resistant. There was not as much room for inset maps as we had hoped, but good-sized urban map of Amarillo, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City are included. The map has two covers, one for each State, for easier display; both States are done at the same scale.
