Australia was one of the first countries ITMB published, back in the 1980s, albeit a licensed version. Our own original artwork was completed in the mid-1990s, but until recently, we have not focused on sectional maps of the country based on individual states. In 2019, we published Brisbane and Queensland, and Sydney and New South Wales. Now, we are issuing the ‘middle’ states of South Australia and Northern Territory to provide better coverage of these important parts of Australia at a better scale than a country map could provide. South Australia can be thought of as having two parts; the fertile farming economy surrounding Adelaide in the south and the much more arid northern portion. The road network in the south tends to be well developed, with paved roads going more or less east-west to NSW and WA. This is the latest map from our growing digital data base on Africa. One side of this map concentrates on the five countries of what is generally known as East Africa - Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, with bits of neighboring countries thrown in. The second side covers what has always been called Central Africa, probably because it was once British Central Africa. This is Zambia,Zimbabwe, and Malawi, with the northern half of Mozambique and the Okavango delta included, as well as a bit of DEM Congo. The map covers a vast portion of the African continent and includes a diverse ethnic and geographic reality. We have tried to categorize roads by condition, but the reality of Africa is that some main roads are in pretty poor condition. Some secondary roads are not shown as being as good as they probably are, but verifying data for Africa is difficult. This is our first map of this part of the world based on GIS Data. This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada. United States of America (USA) Travel Reference Map has been mapped before, but the USA is a huge country, extremely developed, and almost impossible to show on a map without over-simplification. Most commercial maps use small sheets of paper and print single-sided, making it impossible to show this vast country to advantage. Well, Lan’s been hard at work developing a ‘proper’ traveller’s aid to navigating around the USA, and here it is. We printed it on an exceptionally large sheet of paper, 39” tall by 54” wide (our normal printing size is 27”x39”). To do this, we merged our four existing databases into one, then split them so that the west side is on one side and the east side on the other. In this edition, we have combined Mauritania with Mali. Although both are interesting countries, the two fit naturally together as a unit, albeit at slightly differing scales. Technically, this should be a 1st edition map, as it is the first time we have combined these two desert countries on to one sheet, but I ll let Robert at the Library of Congress worry about the niceties of bibliographic accuracy as soon as Trump allows him to do the work he loves for a salary. Mauritania was one of the most unusual countries I visited as a young traveller. Of course, I had an advantage, in that I was too young to know that what I was doing was supposed to be impossible. I entered from what was then the Spanish Sahara via a piste (a sandy track with multiple pathways, only some of which avoid soft sand), travelling with a young Bedouin man. In Zouerate, a mining camp, I had to tie my VW campervan onto a railway flatbed car, and endure hundreds of kilometres of a sand dune wasteland before reaching Choum, and a siding where I could off-load the vehicle. The track south to Nouakchott was covered with sand and treacherous. Nowadays, there is a paved road to the southern border of Morocco, and a good road all the way along the coast to Rosso, where a ferry can take one across to Senegal. Mali adjoins Mauritania, both being formerly part of French West Africa. The capital, Bamako, is an interesting town with quite a bit of colonial architecture still in place. East of there is Djenne, a forbidden city for infidels when I was there (see cover photo), but a fascinating mud-brick city. Further east again is Mopti, a river port where camel caravans off-load tablets of salt mined still far in the Sahara for transport by boat to Dakar. Further east again is Timbuktu (or Tombouctou as it is now spelled), at one time the most exotic isolated destination known to mankind. Further south is the Bandiagara escarpment, a must-see living area for locals who have created a living space from the sheer walls of the cliff. Both countries are fascinating places to visit.
