Wegenkaart - landkaart Balkans Rail and Road | ITMB
The region of Europe known as the Balkans is normally restricted to the area that used to be Yugoslavia, but it is geographically much larger and needs to be seen in its expanded format that includes Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and Greece, with that portion of Turkey that has had so much influence on the region over many centuries. Side 1 is dominated by the great land mass of historic strategic importance that has been fought over for centuries. Nowadays, conflict is still threatening, with Kosovo and Serbia always at each other's throats and Romania warily watching Russia's aggression next door in both Ukraine and Moldova. Attitudes are shifting towards closer integration with the EU in the region, with Albania, Northern Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro clamouring for admission and NATO being looked at to provide security against further Russian aggression. As a result, the region retains huge geopolitical significance, but it also offers touristic opportunities that are difficult t…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Kosovo & Westelijke Balkan | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Kosovo & Westelijke Balkan | ITMB
Kosovo is the country that shouldn’t exist, but does. When Yugoslavia fells to pieces after Tito died, Kosovo was lumped in with Serbia but was very unhappy with being a part of an Eastern Orthodox regime. It broke away, resulting in genocidal fighting until the Americans stepped in and stopped the fighting. The region was then placed under a European Union control in the faint hope that it would merge with Albania, or Montenegro, but it didn’t. Relations with Serbia are still quite strained, but Kosovo is still surviving as a mountainous Balkan state. Fought over for centuries by Turks and Serbs, Kosovo is emerging as a small but touristic European country. This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path travel destination! The second side of the sheet provides an excellent regional coverage for the Western Balkans, essentially Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, and reasonably large tracks of land for Hungary, Albania, and North Macedonia, showing the growing number of wilderness parks…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Bosnië en Montenegro | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Bosnië en Montenegro | ITMB
For some reason, Bosnia Herzegovina has never attracted the attention of firms publishing maps. Understandably, since the breakup of Yugoslavia, the entire region has been somewhat unattractive for visitors. Also, Bosnia by itself is difficult to map, due to its shape. However, we have visited the country several times and find it to be interesting, friendly, and attractive. We were particularly impressed by Montenegro. Since it broke away from Serbia, this country has moved forward quickly. It uses the Euro as a currency, has lovely Mediterranean Sea resorts along its coast, and is a progressive country tying its future to the rest of Europe as a future EU member. The roads in both countries are good, and the damage done by civil in-fighting largely a thing of the past. Both countries are well-worth a visit. The map also includes Kosovo. Ethnically, it is probably more tied to Albania than to Bosnia, but geographically, Bosnia is closer and Kosovo is shown in good detail on this doub…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Egypt & Cairo | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Egypt & Cairo | ITMB
Following the so-called Arab spring of a few years ago, northern Africa experienced much turbulence. Egypt experienced the overthrow of the government, the installation of a radical religious-oriented replacement, and the installation of military governance. Tourism plummeted. Most map publishers discontinued their maps of the country. Five years later, Egypt has stabilized and tourism is growing. We feel that the time is right to re-introduce our ITMB map of Egypt. This version focuses on the portions of the country that have been re-opened for tourism, which means from the Mediterranean coastline south to the Aswan Dam. The portion further south remains closed for the moment, as is the border crossing with Sudan. We have also been forced to leave off the Great Sand Sea and the Western Desert portions for the same reason of unrest, as the border areas with Libya remain very unstable. However, we have provided a large inset map of Egypt, covering everything, in the area of desert. We …

Wegenkaart - landkaart Venezuela | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Venezuela | ITMB
Wegenkaart met tevens aanduidingen van Nationale Parken en reservaten. Stadsplattegrond van Caracas 1:25.000 en kaart 1:500.000 van omgeving Caracas. This is another one of our brand new maps. The artwork has been digitally-prepared, and this time printed double-sided to achieve a MUCH better scale. We have included a regional inset map of the Caracas area, and insets of the Roraima Mountains region, but the size of Venezuela is such that the rest of the paper consists solely of the country itself. The southern portion remains relatively unexplored and undeveloped, with few roads and only the occasional settlement, and the northern coastal region shows the road network very well. This is the first new map of Venezuela in many years. Legend Includes: Roads by classification, Railways, Rivers, Rapids, Lakes, Swamps, Points of Interest, Airports, Harbours, Archaeological Sites, Museums, Churches, Car Ferries, Oilfields, Heights in meters, Beaches, Hospitals, Hotels, Universities, Gas Sta…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Tahiti - French Polynesia | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Tahiti - French Polynesia | ITMB
Anyone who has visited Tahiti retains fond memories of a wonderful Polynesian paradise. This map shows the major islands of French Polynesia as a series of large insets on Side 1. An overall inset map showing the many islands is also shown, but for showing detail, one must expand the individual islands. The largest one is the volcanic Tahiti Nui, with the capital city of Pape’ete (or Papeete in English), for which a detailed inset map is included. Most visitors stay in the vicinity of Papeete, along the coast. We show several popular resorts. There is a good circular road around the island’s shoreline, but no roads in the interior. The island is joined to another, called Tahiti Iti, or Little Tahiti, and roads extend partway around this less-developed part of the combined island. Most of the other islands are rarely visited, although they have resorts, beaches, and a lifestyle of their own. Names like Huahine, Riatea, Tahaa, and Maiao may not be as familiar as they should be, but all …

This is a new title for ITMB, providing detailed coverage of almost all of what most of us consider to be the Scandinavian countries. Only the southernmost portions of Denmark had to be left off. The map is double-sided, with Denmark and most of Norway and Sweden on one side and their balances and Finland on the reverse side. The road network, particularly the motorways and A-type roads shown up very well. Secondary roads show well and also are easy to see. Rail lines are present as well as ferry routes, of which there are many. The area of Scandinavia is so large in the European context that little attention has been paid to the region. When mapping a large area such as this is, it is difficult to show every detail. We have done our best and included all world heritage sites, major churches, castles, some campsites, and as many touristic attractions as could be fitte…

Can you name anyone who has published a detailed map of Siberia? I cannot! This is one of the largest geographical regions on earth, comparable in magnitude to the Sahara or Gobi desert areas, or the vast Prairie regions of Canada, but it has never had a travel map. Well, now it does and the last frontier of mapping the world has been breached. The part of Russia east of the Ural Mountains is vast; there is no other word to describe the enormity of this region of grassland and tundra. Technically, it does not extend all the way to the Pacific Ocean, but it does go from the Arctic Ocean to the Chinese and Mongolian borders. This is not a part of the world well travelled, but it could become so with a good, detailed map. We start in the west at Omsk on the Irtysh River, where the northern and southern branches of t…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Mont Blanc & Alpen | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Mont Blanc & Alpen | ITMB
As far as mountains go, Mont Blanc in France and Italy, forming the border between the two countries, with Switzerland nearby, is the best known and most attractive mountain in the Alps. The peak itself is far too challenging for most climbers to attempt, but the region is dotted with ski lifts, hiking trails in the lower regions, and fascinating scenic villages. Mont Blanc tops out at 4,807.81 metres and is protected by Monte Bianco National Park in Italy. There is a long tunnel underneath the mountain joining France (near Chamonix) and Italy (near Courmayeur) and a beautiful highway along its western side (the D1506) and in Italy along its south side (SS26). There is also a Grande Route long-distance hiking trail that surrounds the mountain. We show it in its entirety, including numerous overnight stopping areas, either in towns or in mountain refuges. Naturally, skiing is a huge draw, and we include several ski lifts, all rail lines in the region, including the fabulous cog line fr…

As a result, the region retains huge geopolitical significance, but it also offers touristic opportunities that are difficult to find in crowded European countries. Names like Zagreb, Brasov, Sofia, Tirane, and Skopje may not resonate as well as London or Paris, but the entire region offers a distinctive unique attractiveness that will strongly influence all of Europe in the decades to come. Besides, it's a lovely part of the world – a road less travelled!
