    British Columbia is big! Gargantuan huge, in fact, although it is lightly populated. ITMB published a map of the more densely populated southern half of the province a number of years ago, and we have been asked to give the same emphasis to the northern half ever since. Here it is! Side 1 is of the western portion, including the Alaskan Panhandle, with the route followed by cruise ships heading north and clearly delineates the border between Canada and the USA that nearly erupted into warfare (54 40 or fight). It also shows the Stewart Highway heading north towards the Yukon, with its branch leading to Hyder, Alaska, the only place in the USA that uses Canadian money and does all its banking in Canada. The second side covers the eastern half of BC’s north, with the Alaska Highway starting in Dawson Creek and extending north to Fort Nelson before veering west into the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains to the Yukon border. The atlas covers the Cook Islands, Easter Island, Hawaiian Islands, Nauru, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti/French Polynesia, and Tonga. It is not complete for all of what might be considered Polynesia, in that Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and New Caledonia were left out because we do not have artwork for these areas, but this is as good as it gets for now! Hawaii occupies 44 pages of the atlas; the Solomons 11 pages, tiny Nauru one, Samoa 15, the Cook Islands an amazing 20 pages, and Tahiti 20. Easter Island is included because the evidence is that the original settlers migrated from Polynesia, not Peru, and occupies another 18 pages. Maps of the South Pacific islands are difficult to prepare, being small land masses in a vast ocean.       Wegenatlas in A5 formaat.   This project has taken a lot of time and effort to complete. We published the Eastern Canada Atlas two years ago to replace the licensed artwork that was no longer available. Then Western Canada sold out more quickly than we expected and it has taken Lan and her team more time than expected to prepare this artwork. In part, this is because the new atlas also includes all of Arctic Canada (Yukon, NWT, and Nunavut) as well as BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. This is the thickest atlas we've ever produced, at 160 pages. Each province (of which there are 4) and Territory (of which there are 3) has been shown to best advantage; for example, Saskatchewan fills 22 pages at 1:125,000 scale, plus four additional pages for urban insets. BC takes 19 pages, plus five more for insets. The artwork covers a vast expanse of land, showing roads, rail lines, camping spots, rivers, lakes, towns, and touristic attractions. The famous Alaska Highway of WW2 fame has been largely paved and straightened by now, but is still one of the paramount exploration adventures in the world and is far more accessible than the Karakoram or mid-Australia routes. The original highway, from Dawson Creek in northern British Columbia to close to Fairbanks, Alaska, has been supplemented by several off-shoots: the Dempster Highway leading to Inuvik, in Canada's Northwest Territories, the Dalton Highway, leading north to the high Arctic at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, and the Stewart Highway leading south through the Coastal Mountains to Prince Rupert, BC are all closely integrated with the traditional Alaska Highway. All of these are shown in great detail in this atlas. Road conditions, distances, campgrounds, convenient hiking trails, heights of land, parks, and everything else that we could think of to make this booklet useful has been included. It has also been very attractively priced, which I hope is being noted. This is a light-weight and nicely-presented attempt to move mapping forwards into its bright future as value-added information of use to users and affordably priced.
