Een stad, ooit door Nederlanders gesticht in een gebied waar al eeuwenlang 'indianen' leefden. Gedreven door de handel. Ze brachten steeds meer kolonisten, goederen en vee om het nieuwe gebied op te bouwen. Ook brachten zij de eerste Afrikaanse 'slaven'. Van die geschiedenis is nog veel terug te vinden, voor wie goed kijkt. Zijn interesse in de stad en in de koloniale geschiedenis zijn samengekomen in dit reisverslag. Hierin neemt hij de geïnteresseerde lezer mee langs een groot aantal plaatsen en gebeurtenissen die hieraan refereren. In het reisverslag wordt de lezer langs de vijf grote wijken van New York gevoerd: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx en Staten Island.
