Young People's Housing Opportunity in Post-reform China (Paperback)
Young People's Housing Opportunity in Post-reform China (Paperback)
The inquiry that has culminated in this thesis was inspired by the challenges that many young Chinese people were facing when trying to gain access to affordable housing at the time of study, the early 2010s. By then, more than thirty years of housing reforms had completely changed how housing was being provided in China. The resulting structure had led young people to access housing in ways that were very different from those of their parents' generation (Deng, Hoekstra & Elsinga, 2017). These observations prompted the following research question: What are the key factors defining young people's opportunity to access housing, and how do these factors relate to China's institutional changes during and after the market reform? The ensuing research has demonstrated that parental resources and intergenerational reciprocity are indispensable to the housing opportunity of young people, as home ownership has come to mediate the exchange of resources between generations.

Fashion for God (Paperback)
Fashion for God (Paperback)
Priest's vestments have long been things to which the church devoted a great deal of attention and money. They were - and many still are - stunningly beautiful items. When the continued existence of the Catholic church came under threat during the time of the Dutch Republic, and clandestine Catholic churches could not be recognisable as such from the street, the church would compensate on the inside for what could not be shown on the outside. In the seventeenth century embroidered vestments became tokens of resistance in gold, silver and silk. They also reflected the agendas of the women who made them. Behind closed doors, they did everything in their power to uphold their Catholic faith. In the eighteenth century, pious wealthy women would donate their ballgowns in colourful French, English, Chinese and Dutch floral fabrics to the church to be turned into magnificent, unique church vestments. And so it was that a priest might come to be standing at the altar wearing a pink robe with a

Protective Wraps (Paperback)
Protective Wraps (Paperback)
"Protective wraps, transcultural aid for families" offers a new perspective on the care practice. It deals with what a professional needs for an open dialogue with 'the Other'. The book answers questions such as: What does a care worker need to be interculturally competent? What is the influence of his personal background on his dealing with and judgment of people from a different culture or context? How can truly accessible and well-functioning aid for migrants and refugees, but also for the Dutch, be realized? What is the role of intergenerational family thinking and what is the influence of the consequences of migration in this respect? In this revised edition, an evaluation assignment has been added to each chapter. Furthermore, the importance of empathy and compassion in the provision of care is extensively discussed. Attention is paid to superdiversity and the theory of the functioning of inclusion and exclusion mechanisms. Intercultural competencies are also dealt with in depth.

Righting English that's Gone Dutch (Paperback)
Righting English that's Gone Dutch (Paperback)
Written English that's gone Dutch - Dunglish - contains carry-overs from Dutch language and follows Dutch conventions of layout and style. It's produced by Dutch native speakers and sometimes by English native speakers living in the Netherlands who've assimilated Dutch ways. Using examples she's collected, Joy Burrough takes a sideways look at what gets unintentionally transferred from Dutch to English, and why, and compares Dutch conventions with those in British and American English. The result is a contrastive stylebook exploring the zone where Dutch and English meet, the overlap between editing and translation, and giving advice on writing English right. Graced by a foreword by Professor David Crystal, this new edition (the third) of this unconventional yet authoritative guide to what clogs up Dutch English is more than an update. Certain explanations have been rewritten, others have been streamlined and new topics have been added. A new chapter explores allusions and assumptions

Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch female professionals in social work (Paperback)
Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch female professionals in social work (Paperback)
This qualitative research, carried out between 2012 and 2016 at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (HU) in the Netherlands, explores the experiences of newly-started Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch female professionals in social work. The key research question was how these professionals perceive and position themselves in relation to their profession. The professionals were actively involved as co-researchers in parts of the research, doing research with peers from the same background. The last section of the research also discusses and explores the experiences of social work educators by including their perspective. The Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch female professionals want to bring their cultural and religious background to bear on their work as professionals. They want to bring in faith and spirituality, as this is a source of strength and support for them, and attempt to stretch the 'boundaries' of what it means to be a professional. They would also like to see their

Land Art Live (Paperback)
Land Art Live (Paperback)
For Dutch see below - English - Flevoland has a unique collection of Land Art, including De Groene Kathedraal by Marinus Boezem, Observatorium by Robert Morris and Riff, PD#18245 by Bob Gramsma. These Land Art works once stood in the empty polder, but are now part of a dynamic landscape transformation. Views on art and its social significance have also changed in the five decades this book covers. This raises questions about the preservation of the works and of the collection as a whole. Land Art Live | The Flevoland Collection sheds light on the Land Art in Flevoland. A younger generation of artists was asked to use performances to connect with the original meaning of the Land Art works. In addition, experts in the field of visual art, heritage and landscape provide ideas with which the future of this exceptional collection and the landscape can be shaped. Land Art Live can also be used as a guide when visiting this extraordinary open-air museum. - Dutch - In Flevoland bevindt zich

Tales of Violence (Paperback)
Tales of Violence (Paperback)
Although it has long been known that the Indonesian War of Independence was far more violent than generally assumed by the Dutch public, for a long time the tendency to downplay, ignore, or justify the scale and nature of this violence dominated. 'Tales of Violence' examines how politicians and administrators in both the Netherlands and Indonesia have dealt with this large-scale violence and poses painful questions. How were the violence of war and the numerous excesses between 1945-1949 discussed, concealed, passed on, manipulated, and used politically? What did Dutch, colonial, and Indonesian politicians and administrators know about the nature of the actions of their own and enemy troops? Why did investigations into specific scandals grind to a halt or were their outcomes hidden from the public? What did those in charge do with their knowledge and how did communications influence public support for warfare? The authors argue that the way the war in Indonesia has long been viewed has

Productomschrijving

For Dutch see below - English - Although much of what is normal in housing construction today was once innovative or even radical, the history of housing also shows numerous experiments that have just faded away. In the light of new housing challenges, it is expedient to re-examine these renewal proposals. The new edition of DASH, concerning experimental housing, examines the subject in the broadest sense: What is the European experience with housing experiments? What have the Dutch prototypes brought us? In a series of articles and interviews, we look at the past, but also at the future: if, say, a million homes have to be realized in the Netherlands by 2030, what kind of dwellings are we talking about? In the project documentation we present experimental housing projects based on themes that are relevant in the contemporary situation. - Dutch - De standaardisatie van de Nederlandse woningbouw staat op gespannen voet met de steeds gevarieerdere vraag naar woningen. Hoe kan de overheid
