Phases and Stages is een volwaardig conceptalbum dat het uiteenvallen van een huwelijk volgt, met één kant vanuit het perspectief van de vrouw en de andere vanuit de man. Met zijn doordachte arrangementen en diepgaande emoties is dit niet alleen een van Nelson's beste albums, maar ook een van de grote conceptalbums.
