Cultures of Stone (Paperback)
Cultures of Stone (Paperback)
This volume establishes a rich cross-disciplinary dialogue about the significance of stone in society across time and space. The material properties of stone have ensured its continuing importance; however, it is its materiality which has mediated the relations between the individual, society and stone. Bound up with the physical properties of stone are ideas on identity, value, and understanding. Stone can act as a medium through which these concepts are expressed and is tied to ideas such as monumentality and remembrance; its enduring character creating a link through generations to both people and place. This volume brings together a collection of seventeen papers which draw on a range of diverse disciplines and approaches; including archaeology, anthropology, classics, design and engineering, fine arts, geography, history, linguistics, philosophy, psychology and sciences. Contents: List of Figures Contributors Acknowledgements Introduction: Constructing Identities through Stone

Fotoboek Greece | Amber Books
Fotoboek Greece | Amber Books
Regarded as the cradle of Western civilization, Greece is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, political science, major mathematical principles and Western drama, as well as the Olympic Games. But it is also a country of mountains – 80 per cent of the country is mountainous – as well as islands – of more than 1,000 islands, 227 are inhabited. And it has the longest coastline of any Mediterranean country.   From antiquity to modernity, from the tallest mountains to the tiniest islands, from the Romans to the Venetians to the Ottomans, Greece is a beautiful photographic exploration of this fascinating country. Arranged by region, the book celebrates such classical highlights as Athens’s Acropolis, the ruins at Mycenae in the Peloponnese, the Byzantine churches of Thessaloniki and the ancient Temple at Delphi. It also explores the beauty of the islands of the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, the Zagori mountains in the northwest of the country and the hydrotherm…

What layer are we on? (Paperback)
What layer are we on? (Paperback)
Spiritual caregivers provide support with regard to meaning and worldviews. One of their professional competences is hermeneutical: the ability to connect current life experiences with sources of meaning and traditions. We refer to the conversations on meaning and tradition as hermeneutic communication. Our question is how hermeneutic communication takes place in a society with a plurality of worldviews and a multitude of sources and traditions. How does that context affect the worldview identity of the spiritual caregivers? And what shape does hermeneutic communication take on in terms of process and content? The study begins with an exploratory inquiry among lecturers at theological institutions and then turns to conceptual inquiries in the fields of philosophy, psychology, and theology. On that basis a multiple embedded case study is undertaken into the practice of seven Protestant Christian chaplains working in general hospitals. Use is made of recorded conversations between

Reisgids Somaliland | Bradt Travel Guides
Reisgids Somaliland | Bradt Travel Guides
Voor vele landen net zo goed, zo niet beter dan de Planet. Beduidend soberder uitgevoerd, maar ook met veel informatie voor backpackers en met veel kaartmateriaal. Een aanrader!   There is a reason no other publisher produces a guide to Somaliland: it is not an easy book to produce. The research is extremely challenging, the production is expensive and, because Somaliland is such a niche travel destination, the sales potential is very limited. Unfortunately, the first edition of this book did not recoup its costs. We were left with a difficult decision: increase the retail price to make a second edition possible or admit defeat and allow the guide to go out of print. We don’t like to admit defeat.   This second edition is significantly more expensive than the first edition, but we sincerely hope you’ll understand why that is the case, and feel that the revised price still represents excellent value for such vital and unique information. We are committed to providing high quality tr…

Understanding the basic dynamics of organizing (Paperback)
Understanding the basic dynamics of organizing (Paperback)
Organization theory is a theoretical field of study distinct from more practical fields such as general management, organizational behavior and human resource management. It is a basic science studying the ways human actors organize themselves into groups with various degrees of complexity. Organization theory is not the study of organizations. Groups of actors referred to as 'organizations' in everyday parlance only constitute one part of the groups introduced in this text. Organization theory is, therefore, a necessary tool not only for students of business administration, but also for those of a wide range of other academic fields, including sociology, cultural anthropology, public administration, education and philosophy. Peter Peverelli is affiliated with the Faculty of Economics & Business Administration at VU University Amsterdam. He studied Chinese Language & Culture at Leiden University. He received a PhD in Arts at Leiden University and a PhD in Business Administration at

Productomschrijving

What is truth? is a clear and comprehensive introduction to the Philosophy of Science, that will equally appeal to students of the Humanities, the Social Sciences and the Natural Sciences. With a solid footing in the history of classical philosophy, the book offers an in-depth discussion of Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jacques Derrida and Bruno Latour, among others. The book discusses recent developments in the Philosophy of Science, such as post-Kuhnian philosophy and the current interest in “objectivity”. According to Chunglin Kwa, there is not one rationality of science but several, each with its own logic and legitimate claim to truth. Six such styles of scientific reasoning can be established, pervading the sciences (including the humanities) in different combinations. The latter focus provides the book with an outstanding interdisciplinary outlook. Chunglin Kwa teaches at the University of Amsterdam. What is truth? is a translation of Wat is waarheid?, published
