Kosovo is the country that shouldn’t exist, but does. When Yugoslavia fells to pieces after Tito died, Kosovo was lumped in with Serbia but was very unhappy with being a part of an Eastern Orthodox regime. It broke away, resulting in genocidal fighting until the Americans stepped in and stopped the fighting. The region was then placed under a European Union control in the faint hope that it would merge with Albania, or Montenegro, but it didn’t. Relations with Serbia are still quite strained, but Kosovo is still surviving as a mountainous Balkan state. Fought over for centuries by Turks and Serbs, Kosovo is emerging as a small but touristic European country. This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path travel destination! The region of Europe known as the Balkans is normally restricted to the area that used to be Yugoslavia, but it is geographically much larger and needs to be seen in its expanded format that includes Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and Greece, with that portion of Turkey that has had so much influence on the region over many centuries. Side 1 is dominated by the great land mass of historic strategic importance that has been fought over for centuries. Nowadays, conflict is still threatening, with Kosovo and Serbia always at each other's throats and Romania warily watching Russia's aggression next door in both Ukraine and Moldova. Attitudes are shifting towards closer integration with the EU in the region, with Albania, Northern Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro clamouring for admission and NATO being looked at to provide security against further Russian aggression. The State of Western Australia occupies the western third of the continental country of Australia. The main city is Perth, in the southwest portion, and this is the part of the State with the best land and the most people. Much of the interior is arid desert-like grassland with shallow lakes that often dry out. The road network in the south is generally paved highways and secondary roads, with one road and one rail line heading east to SZ and the rest of the country. Roads in the north tend to be dirt, with the exception of the highway going towards Darwin in NT. There are no roads through the Great Sandy Desert, but the Canning Stock Route crosses the eastern fringe, going north-south. One needs an expensive permit to drive this hazardous track. This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada.
