The Pan-American Highway was created by the USA to improve road communications within the Western Hemisphere post-WW2. The highway started at the Mexican border and eventually reached somewhere south of Santiago in Chile. It was a vote-buying gimmick by the Americans to fund allies, but it also created an essential 'spine' road through Central America to the Darien Gap and along the west coast of South America to the then-limits of Chile. Driving the Pan-Am has become a travel experience. More recently, the improvement in more northerly highways, such as the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, the paving of most of the Stewart Highway through British Columbia, and the tremendous improvement in …

Wegenkaart - landkaart Australia South & Northern Territory | ITMB
Australia was one of the first countries ITMB published, back in the 1980s, albeit a licensed version. Our own original artwork was completed in the mid-1990s, but until recently, we have not focused on sectional maps of the country based on individual states. In 2019, we published Brisbane and Queensland, and Sydney and New South Wales. Now, we are issuing the ‘middle’ states of South Australia and Northern Territory to provide better coverage of these important parts of Australia at a better scale than a country map could provide. South Australia can be thought of as having two parts; the fertile farming economy surrounding Adelaide in the south and the much more arid northern portion. The road network in the south tends to be well developed, with paved roads going more or less east-west to NSW and WA. Northerly roads tend to be gravel or dirt, such as the Birdville Track, and the north-westerly roads tend to pass through land ceded to aboriginals and require permits. Northern Territ…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Western Australia | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Western Australia | ITMB
The State of Western Australia occupies the western third of the continental country of Australia. The main city is Perth, in the southwest portion, and this is the part of the State with the best land and the most people. Much of the interior is arid desert-like grassland with shallow lakes that often dry out. The road network in the south is generally paved highways and secondary roads, with one road and one rail line heading east to SZ and the rest of the country. Roads in the north tend to be dirt, with the exception of the highway going towards Darwin in NT. There are no roads through the Great Sandy Desert, but the Canning Stock Route crosses the eastern fringe, going north-south. One needs an expensive permit to drive this hazardous track. Most of the attractions of the State are to be found fairly close to the coastline. Most of the larger urban areas tend to have been named after British places, such as Albany, Exmouth, and Port Hedland, but many names have been adopted from a…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Southern Ontario | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Southern Ontario | ITMB
Een degelijke kaart met aanduidingen van o.a. nationale parken, vliegveld, benzinepomp, dirt-roads en kleine plattegrond van hoofdstad. Als overzichtskaart goed te gebruiken. The Canadian province of Ontario is intimidatingly large. It is also mostly tundra with extremely few settlements and few roads; in fact, the geographic centre of Ontario is about 1,500 kms north of the nearest road. The very first map I prepared, at age 10, was of Ontario; and it took me six weeks to trace all the lakes. My point is that the developed portion of the province is a much smaller wedge of fertile ground south of the mineral belt of the Great Canadian Shield. This double-sided map focusses on the area south of Sudbury and North Bay and expands the scale to a much more useful purpose for most users. Imagine Detroit in the southwest corner of the map, with Highway 401 joining it to London and Toronto and a branch motorway cutting across to Buffalo. Add in the Bruce Peninsula and the major routes north t…

Wegenatlas Travel Atlas Africa West Route: from Tangier to Cape Town |
Wegenatlas Travel Atlas Africa West Route: from Tangier to Cape Town |
There are three routes one can follow on an overland expedition from Europe to Cape Town (or the reverse). Last year, ITMB published the eastern route, via Cairo and Sudan to Ethiopia and Kenya. This year, we are pleased to announce the publication of a more practical route to follow, via Tangier, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and Ghana, through the Congo to Uganda, and then south over a variety of options to Namibia and South Africa. The advantage of this route is that it avoids the conflict-ridden countries closest to infection from the extremist Islam movement. It also avoids the current difficulties of the central route through Algeria (the Hoggar route) and Niger. We do have to caution that all routes through Africa contain risks. Routes are …

Wegenkaart - landkaart Mont Blanc & Alpen | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Mont Blanc & Alpen | ITMB
As far as mountains go, Mont Blanc in France and Italy, forming the border between the two countries, with Switzerland nearby, is the best known and most attractive mountain in the Alps. The peak itself is far too challenging for most climbers to attempt, but the region is dotted with ski lifts, hiking trails in the lower regions, and fascinating scenic villages. Mont Blanc tops out at 4,807.81 metres and is protected by Monte Bianco National Park in Italy. There is a long tunnel underneath the mountain joining France (near Chamonix) and Italy (near Courmayeur) and a beautiful highway along its western side (the D1506) and in Italy along its south side (SS26). There is also a Grande Route long-distance hiking trail that surrounds the mountain. We show it in its entirety, including numerous overnight stopping areas, either in towns or in mountain refuges. Naturally, skiing is a huge draw, and we include several ski lifts, all rail lines in the region, including the fabulous cog line fro…

Wegenatlas Travel Atlas Alaska Highway | ITMB
Wegenatlas Travel Atlas Alaska Highway | ITMB
A5 boekvorm   This booklet is the same size as all other ITMB atlases and is designed to fit comfortably in a user's backpack, purse, or car door storage bin. The famous Alaska Highway of WW2 fame has been largely paved and straightened by now, but is still one of the paramount exploration adventures in the world and is far more accessible than the Karakoram or mid-Australia routes. The original highway, from Dawson Creek in northern British Columbia to close to Fairbanks, Alaska, has been supplemented by several off-shoots: the Dempster Highway leading to Inuvik, in Canada's Northwest Territories, the Dalton Highway, leading north to the high Arctic at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, and the Stewart Highway leading south through the Coastal Mountains to Prince Rupert, BC are all closely integrated with the traditional Alaska Highway. All of these are shown in great detail in this atlas. Road conditions, distances, campgrounds, convenient hiking trails, heights of land, parks, and everything el…

Productomschrijving

The Pan-American Highway was created by the USA to improve road communications within the Western Hemisphere post-WW2. The highway started at the Mexican border and eventually reached somewhere south of Santiago in Chile. It was a vote-buying gimmick by the Americans to fund allies, but it also created an essential 'spine' road through Central America to the Darien Gap and along the west coast of South America to the then-limits of Chile. Driving the Pan-Am has become a travel experience. More recently, the improvement in more northerly highways, such as the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, the paving of most of the Stewart Highway through British Columbia, and the tremendous improvement in highway infrastructure in Mexico over the past two decades, has made possible the long-awaited Panamericana Adventure Highway. Stretching from the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay south to the famous Alaska Highway, then east into Canada's Yukon, the Panamericana takes a westerly route along the coast and an easterly route through Edmonton and south to Texas. The western route is more interesting, in that much of it runs through pristine mountain wilderness. We have chosen the western route for this atlas, following the Pacific Coast as closely as possible through BC, Washington/Oregon/California to Tijuana. From here, the route can follow south through Baja California or head east and south along the eastern side of the Gulf of Colorado, past Mazatlan and Acapulco to join the original Pan-American at the Guatemala border. From Guatemala south to Panama, the Panamericana North (or Norte) is the original and well-maintained Pa-Am. The Darien Gap still prevents the North and South segments from joining, but this is more a political issue than a technical one. This is an epic atlas covering an epic journey. As often is the case with ITMB, this is another unique title of an interesting part of the world. We plan to do a South edition at a later date.   Legend Includes: Roads by classification, International Boudaries, Time Zone Border, Points of interest, Historic site, Hotels, Museums, Golf courses, Restaurants, Caves, Lighthouses, Gas Stations, Waterfalls, Hotsprings,Hospitals, Historical Sites, Tourist information, Mountain Peaks, Churches,Schools, Embassies,Shipping Centers, Banks,Railway Stations, Bus Terminals, Police Station,Universities, Post Offices,Ferries, Parkings, Stadium and much more
