Covering the central portions of Turkey and especially the popular Cappadocia region. Turkey itself is a fascinating country. This map covers the portion from the Mediterranean coast all the way to Syria and north to the Black Sea port of Samsun. This part of Turkey is somewat less sophisticated than the western coastal cities and Istanbul, but it evokes memories of the many e,pires that have traversed the region. Cappadochia was created centuries ago by local people fearing the hordes of invaders that periodically appeared on the horizon and secreted themselves in soft stone caves carved in an inhospitable part of the country. Today, this is one of Turkey's touristic attractions, but the map is much more than that, this is detailed road map to explore an exciting part of the world.

Turkey is a big country. Most visitors concentrate on Istanbul and the Izmir Coast, which is a shame as there are so many other interesting parts of the country to visit. This map covers the western third of the country as a double-sided map, covering from the Greek/Bulgarian border south to the Mediterranean and east to Eregli and Antalya in the east. Naturally, at a better scale, roads and road conditions can be shown to better advantage, and the ferry routes from Istanbul make more sense. The topography is now showing as contouring more easily, and we have been able to add the next layer of villages. The scale is still not appropriate for showing minor roads and tracks, but we have included as many as we feel we can. The map is printed on durable plastic paper, so will stand up to the rigours of travel quite well. A basin inset map of Istanbul has been included as well. The artwork has been digitally-prepared, and this time printed double-sided to achieve a MUCH better scale. We have included a regional inset map of the Caracas area, and insets of the Roraima Mountains region, but the size of Venezuela is such that the rest of the paper consists solely of the country itself. To me, the north side is the most interesting, covering the portion of Laos from Vientiane, the capital, to the Chinese border. Detailed inset maps of Vientiane and Louang Prabang, the temple city, are included on this side, as are bits of both Thailand and Vietnam. The south portion fills the other side of the sheet, including a goodly portion of Vietnam, showing all border crossings. Much of Thailand has had to be obscured, unfortunately, to make room for the place names index, but the immediate border areas are shown, including the rail line south from Vientiane. This is our newest map for the Caribbean region and essentially replaces the now-defunct Rough Guide map for this country. Trinidad has a chequered history. First ‘discovered’ by Columbus, and named Holy Trinity, its inhabitants were fairly quickly deported as slaves to work in Spanish colonies elsewhere. Sir Walter Raleigh, who was little more than a pirate in spite of later saving England from the Spanish Armada, sacked the only Spanish settlement in 1595. Britain captured the island in 1797, adding Tobago to its administration in 1889. The country’s two claims to fame are the largest Carnival street festival in the world, and having the world’s largest lake of boiling asphalt. Tobago has an amazing history, having changed colonial masters 30 times in a century, as Britain, France, and Spain competed for dominance in the Caribbean. This is a new title for ITMB. The two Central Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are rapidly developing a touristic market and we feel that the world needs a good map to reflect their growing importance. The two ‘stans were part of the Soviet empire that fell apart in 1990, creating a dozen new countries. This double-sided map covers Kyrgyzstan on one side, with an inset map of its capital, Bishkek. The main attractions are Osh and Suyab, both ancient market centres on the Silk Road, and Lake Issyk-Kul, the world’s second largest alpine lake. The reverse side concentrates on Tajikistan mountainous country just west of the Himalayas, with an inset of its capital, Dushanbe. Both of these countries should be considered ‘adventure’ destinations.

This map has been a difficult update, coming in the midst of the turmoil in Haiti caused by the earthquake in the spring of 2010. This is actually two separate maps sharing a single sheet of paper. The Dom Rep side was fairly straight-forward to update, as there has been little change, but the Haiti side needed a lot of time and energy. The earthquake revealed a previously unrealized reality – nobody had any information on Haiti. Our map was the only one in existence, and it proved to be too weak to meet the needs of humanitarian groups. They, however, provided a wealth of useful information as they reached out to isolated villages about road conditions, spelling of place names, and actual locations, which we have added to our artwork. This map covers the country from the southernmost point to Sao Luis on the northern coast and inland as far as Brasilia. This is where 80% of the country lives and where 95% of the tourists visit. The interior and Amazon region will be covered separately. This map includes separate inset maps of both Rio and Sao Paulo and shows the extensive motorway network of Brasil to good advantage. The top attractions of the region are noted, such as Iguazu Falls, Sugar Loaf, Brasilia, and Salvador.
