Never let it be said that ITMB is a shrinking violet! Well, those who think Afghanistan is a perpetual basket case had better think again. Sure, the country is still infested with tribal factions (it always has been), and fighting still occurs all too often, but if one wants to get in on the groundswell of a new day, one starts early. This is the ...

Wegenkaart - landkaart Afghanistan | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Afghanistan | ITMB
Legend Includes: Roads by classification, silk road, airports, towns, villages, ruins, national parks, lakes, swamps, points of interest and other information It is a bit difficult to credit Afghanistan having touristic potential at the moment, but it is an extremely important country right now, and that justifies a very good map of the country. This is our third edition of this country and each one keeps getting better. We can’t justify sending a researcher into a combat zone to gather data, but we are thankful to those aid workers and soldiers who have added to our information base and helped make this map more useful. In this edition, we are showing some new roads, reflecting the reality that the country is succeeding in improving its infrastructure in spite of a very tense political situation. We have also pl…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Western Canada | ITMB
This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada. The Fort McMurray forest fire of a year ago covered an area larger t…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Turkmenistan - Afghanistan | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Turkmenistan - Afghanistan | ITMB
These two countries, bordering on Iran and Uzbekistan, are in a very volatile part of the world. They constitute the heart of Central Asia; a bit difficult to reach, but definitely suitable for adventure travel. Turkmenistan occupies one side of the sheet, and Afghanistan is on the other side at a better scale. Turkmenistan stretches from the Caspian Sea to a major river (the Amuder) that forms its eastern boundary with Uzbekistan and its border with Afghanistan. An inset map of the capital just north of the Iranian border, Ashgabat, is included. On the other side, Afghanistan is a lovely country and is slowly coming out of an extremely bad situation. It is still quite an unsafe country, and fighting could flare up again in the spring. Regardless, it is a strategically important country and one that ITMB has taken quite a bit of effort to make into a significant map. This is a very interesting map, of an of-the-beaten-track part of the world. It reflects the best information we have, …

Wegenkaart - landkaart Canada | ITMB
Well, it’s about time, eh?!? ITMB, after only thirty years on the go, finally gets around to publishing a map of Canada. When we first started mapping, there was a pressing need for good maps of Central and South America, then of Africa, then etc etc and we never found time to concentrate on our own country until fairly recently. This map was prepared by Natural Resources Canada and is, as a result, as accurate a map as one could hope to have. We are very proud of it, and very pleased to be able to use such top-rate cartography. The map covers all of the land mass of Canada, from its southernmost point to the top of Ellesmere Island and from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. It’s an excellent map, but I’m going to give one proviso. Canada is the second-largest country on the face of the planet and there is no way that a single-sided sheet can portray…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Amazon & Brazil North | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Amazon & Brazil North | ITMB
We first mapped the Amazon River Basin for a rainforest protection conference many years ago, preparing what we thought was a pretty good rendition until we arrived at a conference full of experts who were able to add so much more data that we re-did the map before publishing it. We have updated it repeatedly as more information has come to light and are pleased to release this sixth version, which does something that we have wanted to do for some time - it adds a detailed map of the northern half of Brazil/Brasil to a river map that covers portions of seven different countries. The map is printed on revolutionary stone paper (tear-resistant, waterproof, friendly to the environment, and bio-degradable as well as extremely durable), and has two different cover pictures, so it can be marketed either as a map of Brasil or of the Amazon Basin - or both! It is also the only map of the river basin in print. As the world emerges from the era of Covid, this part of the world will once again d…

Reisverhaal An Unexpected Light - Travels in Afghanistan | Jason Elliot
Reisverhaal An Unexpected Light - Travels in Afghanistan | Jason Elliot
An account of a trip through war-torn and poverty-stricken Afghanistan, this remarkable book could have been titled "An Unexpected Beauty." Elliot, who first traveled to the country as a 19-year-old enthusiast of the mujahedin, has no illusions about the inherent shortcomings of travel writing ("a semi-fictional collection of descriptions that affirm the prejudices of the day"). He also dismisses the journalistic method, which relies on a single bombed-out street in Kabul to monolithically represent an entire nation. So it is not without some self-deprecation that he offers his own strange and improbable adventures in the country's lawless stretches and perilous mountain passes. "I had in mind a quietly epic sort of journey," he explains. "I had given up on earlier and more ambitious schemes and was prepared to make an ally of uncertainty, with which luck so often finds a partnership." Humorous, honest and wry, a devotee of Afghanistan's culture, Elliot strives to debunk the myth of "…

Can you name anyone who has published a detailed map of Siberia? I cannot! This is one of the largest geographical regions on earth, comparable in magnitude to the Sahara or Gobi desert areas, or the vast Prairie regions of Canada, but it has never had a travel map. Well, now it does and the last frontier of mapping the world has been breached. The part of Russia east of the Ural Mountains is vast; there is no other word to describe the enormity of this region of grassland and tundra. Technically, it does not extend all the way to the Pacific Ocean, but it does go from the Arctic Ocean to the Chinese and Mongolian borders. This is not a part of the world well travelled, but it could become so with a good, detailed map. We start in the west at Omsk on the Irtysh River, where the northern and southern branches of t…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Scotland - Schotland | ITMB
Wegenkaart - landkaart Scotland - Schotland | ITMB
Anyone who has been in this business for a few years remembers Ordnance Survey and their brilliantly detailed artwork. They should also remember that OS guarded this artwork religiously. That all changed when the then head of government in the UK, one soon-forgotten Gordon Brown, decreed that commercial OS artwork had to be discontinued and artwork had to be made more freely available to users. I expected an outpouring of new artwork by private UK firms. It did not happen; in fact, the range of travel maps decreased dramatically. However, OS artwork is still an excellent source of mapping artwork. This is a wonderful double-sided, detailed map of Scotland. It is both extremely detailed and accurate. We have added symbols for parks, historic sites, battlefields, country hotels, and anything else that we think would interest visitors. In order to portray Scotland to best scale advantage, the only inset included with this map are those of outlying islands, such as the Shetlands. ITMB als…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Wales & southwest England | ITMB
Finally, we have been able to create our own map of the lovely country of Wales. I use the word ‘country’ in its truest sense, as Wales was invaded and taken over by the English centuries ago. Regardless, the Welsh language and Welsh culture continue to flourish, although English is commonly spoken. We have visited Wales on several occasions and find that the attractions are so numerous that we could never see them all. There are too many castles to count, but some of the best preserved in the British Isles are in Wales, notable Caernarfon, but nearby Harlech is a World Heritage Site. St, David’s must be one of the smallest and loveliest cathedrals in the world, and Tintern Abbey ruins among the most poignant anywhere. We took Johnny to Abergavenny for lunch in March, not that it made any difference; he just pined for a McDonalds. This map is double-sided, with Wales on one side and the West Coun…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Mauritania & Mali | ITMB
Mali 1:1.900.000 Mauretanië 1:2.200.000 In this edition, we have combined Mauritania with Mali. Although both are interesting countries, the two fit naturally together as a unit, albeit at slightly differing scales. Technically, this should be a 1st edition map, as it is the first time we have combined these two desert countries on to one sheet, but I ll let Robert at the Library of Congress worry about the niceties of bibliographic accuracy as soon as Trump allows him to do the work he loves for a salary. Mauritania was one of the most unusual countries I visited as a young traveller. Of course, I had an advantage, in that I was too young to know that what I was doing was supposed to be impossible. I entered from what was then the Spanish Sahara via a piste (a sandy track with multiple pathways, only some of whi…

Productomschrijving

Never let it be said that ITMB is a shrinking violet! Well, those who think Afghanistan is a perpetual basket case had better think again. Sure, the country is still infested with tribal factions (it always has been), and fighting still occurs all too often, but if one wants to get in on the groundswell of a new day, one starts early. This is the first map of Kabul that's ever been published by a major cartographic house. Is it a good map? Well, I hope so. Obviously, doing the research was a bit difficult, but it is the best darned map on the market and will appeal to aid agencies, relief workers, the families of tens of thousands of soldiers who are posted to the region, and to the rebuilders who are steadily and quietly rebuilding the new Afghanistan. It isn't all doom and gloom; there's some exciting things happening in Afghanistan that are positive, like the rebuilding of the medieval fortress overlooking Heart, or the first council of elders that was held in Kabul very recently.
