    This is a new title for ITMB, in that it is the first time we have mapped the State of Washington. The actual area of the map includes Portland and northern Oregon and Vancouver and the border area with the USA. A small portion of Idaho is also shown. Wilderness campsites, parks such as Rainier, Olympic, and Baker, are shown. Seattle as a city, stretches far beyond the confines of a practical map in that it stretches from Everett to Tacoma. Our map covers from the University in the north to the Beacon Hill neighbourhood in the south and from the waterfront to Lake Washington. An inset map of the greater region is included. The rapid transit line is also included on the map and on the back cover. This map hopes to accomplish two goals; first, it is a detailed road and points of interest map for Washington State and adds to our growing range of State covered in detail, and second, it combines that portion of Canada's BC accessible to Americans heading north. The map has two covers so can be marketed either as a USA map title or a Canadian title. The front side covers all of Washington State, with a bit of Oregon and Idaho, and has a decent-sized inset map of downtown Seattle. The reverse side covers much-larger British Columbia - at least a portion of it, including all of Vancouver Island, all the roads from Vancouver eastwards to the Rockies and north to Kamloops, and hundreds of wilderness campsites in the interior.     Europe is dotted with mini-states that exist solely for historic reasons but are fiercely independent. Liechtenstein, surrounded by Switzerland on its west and south and Austria on its other borders, is such a state. It is larger and more diverse than many imagine and is quite a popular ski resort region. Side 1 is a detailed map of the principality, framed on the west by the Rhine River and a bit of Switzerland and on the east by Austria. Most development occurs in the Rhine Valley in a north-south direction, dominated by the capital city of Vaduz. There are five access points from Switzerland across the Rhine, one from the south, and two from Austria in the north. The ski haven of Malbun is prominently shown, and the scale of the map is detailed enough to name every major street.     This map began as a result of a map conference held in Philadelphia a few years ago. Maps of the city at that time tended to concentrate on the entire spread-out urban area, resulting in the historic core, which was of interest mostly to visitors, crowded into a small portion of the map. Our map covers from the zoo and art gallery in the north to West Oregon St in South Phillie, so takes on much more than the historic area and the downtown, but does so at an excellent scale, so everything from the Liberty Bell to the University of Pennsylvania campus shows up clearly and easy to read. In this revised edition, we have expanded the area of coverage to include the portion of Russia known as the Far East Republic and the eastern portions of Siberia (in January, we released Siberia itself). Lets start with the Kamchatka peninsula itself. This is a very interesting adventure travel destination, famous for its geothermal geysers and its isolation from the rest of Russia. There is only one city of any size, Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky (which I genuinely hope is colloquially known as PK), the capital and location of the peninsula only significant airport. In one sense, this is a brand new map, in that the artwork is all brand new. In another sense, it is our map of Hokkaid re-worked into a more marketable format. In any case, it is a very much-needed sectional map of that portion of Japan from Tokyo northwards. Hokkaido is actually one of the most interesting parts of Japan to visit. The island was opened to settlement only after the Ameicans forced Japan to allow contacts with foreign countries in 1868, thanks to Admiral Peary and Gunboat Diplomacy. Hokkaido has been relatively untouched by Japan’s rush to economic dominance, so is the country’s skiing capital in winter and the part of Japan most similar to America.     The State of Western Australia occupies the western third of the continental country of Australia. The main city is Perth, in the southwest portion, and this is the part of the State with the best land and the most people. Much of the interior is arid desert-like grassland with shallow lakes that often dry out. The road network in the south is generally paved highways and secondary roads, with one road and one rail line heading east to SZ and the rest of the country. Roads in the north tend to be dirt, with the exception of the highway going towards Darwin in NT. There are no roads through the Great Sandy Desert, but the Canning Stock Route crosses the eastern fringe, going north-south. One needs an expensive permit to drive this hazardous track. Most of the attractions of the State are to be found fairly close to the coastline. This is actually our second attempt at mapping the western portion of Canada; the first covered everything from northwestern Ontario to the Pacific Ocean and, while it was an excellent map, the scale that such a huge area covered necessitated severe problems. In this version, all of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon have been mapped from fresh digital data and presented at 1:1.4T scale. This would have been impossible when we prepared the first map. The Northwest Territories portion had to be compressed in two ways; first, the scale is 1:2M; second, only the portion with roads is shown. This is still an extremely large area. One has to consider the actual size of Canada when designing a map. Most countries in Europe would fit into this area, which only covers 20% of Canada. By the shape of the USA, the New England States fill most of one side of the map, but New York City and Philadelphia are included as well as a goodly portion of New York State. The second side covers the rest of the state, plus all of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and most of Ohio, West Virginia and the northern portion of Virginia. In terms of cities, Cincinnati is at the bottom left of the sheet and Richmond at the bottom right, with Detroit at upper left and Albany at upper right.     This is a brand new title from ITMB. Portland is the largest city in the American state of Oregon. It is not the capital; that distinction belongs to Salem, about 50 miles to the south, but Portland is an actual sea-going port, although it is a hundred miles away from the ocean. It is situated on the majestic Columbia River, which at one time formed the border between British-controlled Canada and the emerging United States. That changed after 1842, with the Oregon Treaty, under which both governments agreed to "share" the territory. At that time, the British capital was Astoria, a lovely town at the mouth of the Columbia, but the Governor, realizing that sharing with the Americans meant capitulation to the Americans, moved the capital north to Victoria, on what was then designated a separate colony. Regardless, today both Portland and the State of Oregon present some of the nicest scenery in America. Our portrayal of the city goes from the Northwest Freemont Bridge in the north (the I-5 motorway) south to Ross Island, and from Washington Park in the west to Chavez Blvd. in the east. At this scale, this encompasses the entire core of Portland and provides room to show the rapid transit line, the convention center, the downtown, and all the bridges across the Willamette River. The reverse side of the street shows the State of Oregon in excellent detail. Most of the developed portion of the State is in the western portion, along the Pacific Ocean, or close to the I-5 motorway. Inland, the Great Sandy Desert occupies much of the southern part of the State, while majestic Mount Hood, an inactive volcano, dominates the North. The far eastern portion connects to the State of Idaho, the north to Washington State, and the south to California and Nevada. The map includes a set of "must see" destinations. My favourite is the Spruce Goos Air Museum in McMinnville.
