As with other ITMB maps, this one includes a listing of ‘must see’ attractions, such as Tsingy National Park and the famous Lemur’s Park. De nadruk ligt echter vooral op de natuurkundige aspecten. Scheur- en watervast! Met een kleine kaart van Jakarta. The hundreds of islands making up the island nation of Indonesia make a double-sided map inevitable in order to show any significant amount of detail. Side 1 shows the western half, starting with Sumatra in the upper left and including Java and most of the island of Borneo (Kalimantan Province to the Indonesians). This side also includes a large inset map of central Jakarta (for better detail see our separate map of the city); ditto for Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa islands are in the lower right portion of the map, and most of Malaysia and all of Singapore are included, simply because they are there.     Goede detailkaart van alle kanaaleilanden. Het is zo gedetailleerd dat zelfs straatnamen er op staan. De kaart is ook nog eens geplastificeerd en daarmee scheur- en watervast.  ITMB is pleased to re-introduce the Channel Islands map area after a lengthy hiatus of preparing new artwork. The first version of this part of Europe was licensed artwork by a local firm in Jersey, and upon running out of copies of the printed map, we opted to prepare fresh artwork of our own to continue this interesting corner of the continent to continue to be available. The islands, collectively known in English as the Channel Islands, are one of those anomalies that make Europe so attractive. They are part of Great Britain, but not part of the UK; hence, they are not part of the EU. They are self-governing entities ‘owned’ by the Queen in her role of being Duchess of Normandy. The Bahamas is one of the most touristic Caribbean island countries, with huge resort complexes in Nassau and in Freeport. We visited Grand Bahama Island earlier this month and can attest to the friendliness of the people and the attractiveness of the island. This map shows all of the many islands that comprise The Bahamas. There isn’t a lot of contouring, as the country’s highest point is only 36 feet above sea level. An inset map expanding the island of New Providence, and separate inset maps of Nassau and of Freeport, are included. The map is double-sided, east half-west half, printed on waterproof paper for durability.

In one sense, this is a brand new map, in that the artwork is all brand new. In another sense, it is our map of Hokkaid re-worked into a more marketable format. In any case, it is a very much-needed sectional map of that portion of Japan from Tokyo northwards. Hokkaido is actually one of the most interesting parts of Japan to visit. The island was opened to settlement only after the Ameicans forced Japan to allow contacts with foreign countries in 1868, thanks to Admiral Peary and Gunboat Diplomacy. Hokkaido has been relatively untouched by Japan’s rush to economic dominance, so is the country’s skiing capital in winter and the part of Japan most similar to America. Bermuda is a lovely mid-Atlantic island far off the coast of South Carolina. It is full of colonial architecture and an ‘island’ way of life. Tourism is a key ingredient of the colony’s lifeblood and the island is very popular with cruise ships. There is ample accommodation for longer-term visitors, good roads, and much history. The airport was built by the US Navy during WW2 and is still a US Naval Air Station, but shares the runway with civil aviation. The map includes an excellent inset of St. George’s, which still has its stocks close to the town hall, and another of Hamilton, the capital. This is where most cruise ships dock. For those with the time, the map shows the Railway Trail along the former route of the island’s now-defunct rail line. ITMB, after only thirty years on the go, finally gets around to publishing a map of Canada. When we first started mapping, there was a pressing need for good maps of Central and South America, then of Africa, then etc etc and we never found time to concentrate on our own country until fairly recently. This map was prepared by Natural Resources Canada and is, as a result, as accurate a map as one could hope to have. We are very proud of it, and very pleased to be able to use such top-rate cartography. The map covers all of the land mass of Canada, from its southernmost point to the top of Ellesmere Island and from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. It’s an excellent map, but I’m going to give one proviso. Canada is the second-largest country on the face of the planet and there is no way that a single-sided sheet can portray…

The amazing rapid rail network is now also essentially complete and all such train lines are noted on the map in a red-dashed format. Inset maps of Beijing and Shanghai are shown on side 2, as well as a list of Top Attractions. Als overzichtskaart goed te gebruiken.    We were in Oman a couple of weeks before year end and can certify that it is a safe and attractive country to visit; completely different from its neighbours. The main city is Muscat, which has an inset map on the country side of the sheet, as well as a map of Salalah, in the far west of the country. The road network of the country is well developed, with several crossings to the UAE. Unfortunately, none are available to Saudi Arabia, and the crossing to Yemen, while open, is not advised, due to on-going fighting. Oman also has two enclaves surrounded by UAE; a small one north of Fujairah, and another at the northern tip of the peninsula, separating the Gulf of Oman from the Persian (or Arabic) Gulf.     At long last, we have finally found time to complete our detailed mapping of the American state of Hawaii. The island of Maui may not be at well-known as Oahu, which is extremely popular with Japanese honeymooners, but it is as attractive touristically. Our coverage covers most of Side 1 and includes a detailed inset map of Wailuku, the principal urban area, as well as insets of Lahaina on the west coast and Wailea resort area. This side also includes a map of the island of Lanai, with its main urban area of Lanai City as an inset. Side 2 concentrates on the islands of Molokai, Kauai, and the lightly populated island of Ni’ihau, and includes detailed inset maps of Lihue, Kaunakakai, and Po’ipu, all of which are major resort destinations. The islands are loaded with beaches and places to stay, but also with attractions, which are shown on the map. This is a beautiful map, one of the best we have ever produced, and is a fitting companion to our maps of Big Island, and Oahu/Honolulu, as well as our state map. The Maui/Kauai map also has a double-sided cover, so can be displayed as two separate maps.
