We didn't suspect, when we started developing this title, that Mauna Loa Volcano would erupt as soon as our map of the national park was printed, but it did! It is on the news every night, and a marvelous touristic attraction. How many of us can ever see a massive eruption of molten lava? Now, we can! (at least, from a safe distance). The national park occupies one side of the map and is the latest in ITMB's series of national parks. By the nature of such parks, we show all the features and elevations, but in this case, we'll add the proviso that heights and lava flows are changing the landscape on a daily basis. Volcanoes are sort of like elephants-they go where they please! The reverse side of the sheet is a map of Big Island, where the park is located. Sumatra is the large island west of Java, and extends our detailed mapping of Indonesia by providing a vibrant map of a beautiful but earthquake-prone part of the Indonesian archipelago. Due to its shape and setting, the map also includes Singapore and the southern portion of the Malay peninsula. The two main access points to Sumatra are by ferry from Singapore via Batum Island, and from Java, or by air. This map also extends our islands of the world series, which includes Borneo, Bali/Lombok, Java, and New Guinea (in preparation).     ITMB is very pleased to be expanding our coverage of New Zealand with the release of this fourth title (the others being the country map, the South Island, and Auckland). At this expanded scale, it takes both sides of the sheet to show off the attractions of the northern half of NZ, but the shape of the island provides ample space for a large inset of Auckland and more modest ones of the city region and of New Zealand’s public transport network on side one. Side two has an excellent inset map of Wellington and includes the northernmost portion of South Island, with the ferry connection linking the two islands. At this scale, the place names and road network are very readable, and there is lots of room to show attractions and touristic points of interest. The map also includes our Top Attractions list of must-sees, such as Napier Rotorua, and the Hobbitown Movie Set of Lord of the Rings fame.

    As technology improves, we are able to produce more detailed maps than was previously possible. Such is the case with Ireland, a part of the world consisting of two countries divided by religion and history. Preparing a map of Ireland as a double-sided map means cutting the island into two geographic portions. Side 1 covers the northern half. This includes the portion known as Northern Ireland, or Ulster, and a fair portion of the Republic of Ireland, or Eire; essentially everything north of Dublin and west to Counties Mayo and Galway. Side 2 covers the southern half of the island from just north of Dublin to the outer tips of County Kerry. It also includes a nice inset map of central Dublin. Naturally, all motorways and roads are included, as are touristic attractions, camping/caravan sites, ferry terminals, and Top Attractions. This is a very detailed travel map of the island, printed on waterproof paper for durability. We had great fun driving around Ireland researching this map. It…

    The first edition was published in 2000 using artwork under licence. This edition uses original ITMB artwork. Side 1 covers Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island as well as Quebec s Magdalen Islands at a scale of 1:800,000. This side also includes the Top 10 Attractions of the three provinces. The second side is devoted to the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, with the much smaller island portion being a half-page inset at 1:150,000 scale and the larger mainland portion being at 1:1,700,000. The northernmost tip of Quebec/Labrador belongs to Nunavut. St. Pierre et Miquelon, a French overseas possession just south of Newfoundland Island, is also included, as well as the map s only urban inset, historic St. John s, one of North America s oldest cities. Our coverage covers most of Side 1 and includes a detailed inset map of Wailuku, the principal urban area, as well as insets of Lahaina on the west coast and Wailea resort area. This side also includes a map of the island of Lanai, with its main urban area of Lanai City as an inset. Side 2 concentrates on the islands of Molokai, Kauai, and the lightly populated island of Ni’ihau, and includes detailed inset maps of Lihue, Kaunakakai, and Po’ipu, all of which are major resort destinations. The islands are loaded with beaches and places to stay, but also with attractions, which are shown on the map. This is a beautiful map, one of the best we have ever produced, and is a fitting companion to our maps of Big Island, and Oahu/Honolulu, as well as our state map. The Maui/Kauai map also has a double-sided cover, so can be displayed as two separate maps.
