ITMB publishes a map of Great Britain, but each portion of GB needs its own map to show roads and attractions in more detail. This is a brilliant map of both England and Wales, showing the entire 'country' in a double-sided format. The place names index is formidable, but England in particular is a series of little villages, so it has been very difficult to decide what to include and what to leave out. This map is showing motorways, divided carriageways, all A & B highways, railway lines, airports, historic sites and touristic attractions, parks and gardens, and just about everything that we could fit on to the page to provide users with a detailed, usable map. We have been able to fit all of southern England/Wales as far north as Chester/Lincoln on side A and with a little overlap, from those cities north to the well over the Scottish border, up to Perth/Dundee filling side B. Most visitors to the UK fly into one of London's four airports and combine a visit to the city with an opportunity to travel to various destinations within striking distance of London. England is so incredibly rich in heritage and scenic attractions that it is extremely difficult to portray the country as a map of the entire entity. As a result, England lends itself nicely to be divided into a central/northern portion and a southern portion. To fit areas as diverse as Cornwall and Norwich on one sheet, one needs to have a vertical frame, with Devon/Cornwall up to the top of Wales on one side and Wiltshire to Kent up to York (admittedly, not normally considered to be part of 'southern', but vertically, that's what happens. Bermuda is a lovely mid-Atlantic island far off the coast of South Carolina. It is full of colonial architecture and an ‘island’ way of life. Tourism is a key ingredient of the colony’s lifeblood and the island is very popular with cruise ships. There is ample accommodation for longer-term visitors, good roads, and much history. The airport was built by the US Navy during WW2 and is still a US Naval Air Station, but shares the runway with civil aviation. The map includes an excellent inset of St. George’s, which still has its stocks close to the town hall, and another of Hamilton, the capital. This is where most cruise ships dock. For those with the time, the map shows the Railway Trail along the former route of the island’s now-defunct rail line. This is a completely new map, using original ITMB artwork (the previous edition was licenced from a British firm). It is a double-sided (east half/west half) map with good inset maps of Kathmandu and of its surrounding valley, excellent hypsometry, and as detailed a rendering of the roads as has been possible. The civil unrest that beset this lovely country is now a thing of the past, and Nepal is enjoying a well-deserved touristic boom. Indonesia is a huge and varied country of many islands and many cultures. The Javanese dominate the country. Not only is the island centrally located, but the rich soil and hard-working people has turned the island into the economic powerhouse driving the country’s economy. Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, is located on the island’s north shore, and is the subject of a separate ITM map. This map concentrates on the island’s many charms: the temples of Yogyakarta, the colonial architecture of Surabaya, and the rustic charm of mountainous East Java. The map abounds in insets, including central Jakarta at 1:25 000, but also Cirebon, Bandung, and Solo, Semarang, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Malang, and Yoga to Prambanan at 1:90,000, and the Dieng Plateau at 1:35,000. IThe large island off the east coast of Africa is Madagascar. The actual name of the country is the Malagasy Republic, but the public is much more likely to know the country by its island name, so we call our map by the island’s name, rather than using the country name. Makes sense to us! Regardless, this is a major touristic destination. The double-sided map covers the island in great detail, with an inset map of the capital city, Antananarivo. As with other ITMB maps, this one includes a listing of ‘must see’ attractions, such as Tsingy National Park and the famous Lemur’s Park. The island also has a regular surface route to the Comoro Islands, which are also included on this map.
