The island was opened to settlement only after the Ameicans forced Japan to allow contacts with foreign countries in 1868, thanks to Admiral Peary and Gunboat Diplomacy. The map actually goes from Bangkok north, and side one includes a very good inset map of Bangkok’s central area. Probably the most interesting spot on this side is the town of Kanchanaburi, which is within easy striking distance of Bangkok. This was the site made famous by the war movie Bridge on the River Kwai (now Khwae) on the Japanese-built Burma Railway. The current bridge is not the original, but the Commonwealth Graves Cemetery is well worth a visit. The other side concentrates on the wilder portion of Thailand, the far north. All known points of interest have been included, including a lovely inset map of Chiang Mai, the focal point of the north. Italy is a very densely populated country, requiring sectional maps to portray its complex road/rail network in sufficient detail to make sense. This is a brand new title for ITMB, covering the central portion of the peninsula from Naples north to Florence on side one, and includes a large inset map of Sardinia. Side two covers the vast expanse of the north of the country, from the high alpine valleys of D’Aosta and Trentino to the plains of northern Italy and the coastal provinces of the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines. The immediate border areas of France and Switzerland are included, but the extensive plate name index covers most of those countries. Motorways (in blue) tend to be toll highways. We first mapped the Amazon River Basin for a rainforest protection conference many years ago, preparing what we thought was a pretty good rendition until we arrived at a conference full of experts who were able to add so much more data that we re-did the map before publishing it. We have updated it repeatedly as more information has come to light and are pleased to release this sixth version, which does something that we have wanted to do for some time - it adds a detailed map of the northern half of Brazil/Brasil to a river map that covers portions of seven different countries.
