The Bahamas is one of the most touristic Caribbean island countries, with huge resort complexes in Nassau and in Freeport. We visited Grand Bahama Island earlier this month and can attest to the friendliness of the people and the attractiveness of the island. This map shows all of the many islands that comprise The Bahamas. There isn’t a lot of contouring, as the country’s highest point is only 36 feet above sea level. An inset map expanding the island of New Providence, and separate inset maps of Nassau and of Freeport, are included. The map is double-sided, east half-west half, printed on waterproof paper for durability.

As technology improves, we are able to produce more detailed maps than was previously possible. Such is the case with Ireland, a part of the world consisting of two countries divided by religion and history. Preparing a map of Ireland as a double-sided map means cutting the island into two geographic portions. Side 1 covers the northern half. This includes the portion known as Northern Ireland, or Ulster, and a fair portion of the Republic of Ireland, or Eire; essentially everything north of Dublin and west to Counties Mayo and Galway. Side 2 covers the southern half of the island from just north of Dublin to the outer tips of County Kerry. It also includes a nice inset map of central Dublin. Naturally, all motorways and roads are included, as are touristic attractions, camping/caravan sites, ferry terminals, and Top Attractions. IThe large island off the east coast of Africa is Madagascar. The actual name of the country is the Malagasy Republic, but the public is much more likely to know the country by its island name, so we call our map by the island’s name, rather than using the country name. Makes sense to us! Regardless, this is a major touristic destination. The double-sided map covers the island in great detail, with an inset map of the capital city, Antananarivo. As with other ITMB maps, this one includes a listing of ‘must see’ attractions, such as Tsingy National Park and the famous Lemur’s Park. The first edition was published in 2000 using artwork under licence. This edition uses original ITMB artwork. Side 1 covers Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island as well as Quebec s Magdalen Islands at a scale of 1:800,000. This side also includes the Top 10 Attractions of the three provinces. The second side is devoted to the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, with the much smaller island portion being a half-page inset at 1:150,000 scale and the larger mainland portion being at 1:1,700,000. The northernmost tip of Quebec/Labrador belongs to Nunavut. St. Pierre et Miquelon, a French overseas possession just south of Newfoundland Island, is also included, as well as the map s only urban inset, historic St. John s, one of North America s oldest cities. At long last, we have finally found time to complete our detailed mapping of the American state of Hawaii. The island of Maui may not be at well-known as Oahu, which is extremely popular with Japanese honeymooners, but it is as attractive touristically. Our coverage covers most of Side 1 and includes a detailed inset map of Wailuku, the principal urban area, as well as insets of Lahaina on the west coast and Wailea resort area. This side also includes a map of the island of Lanai, with its main urban area of Lanai City as an inset. Side 2 concentrates on the islands of Molokai, Kauai, and the lightly populated island of Ni’ihau, and includes detailed inset maps of Lihue, Kaunakakai, and Po’ipu, all of which are major resort destinations. Indonesia is a huge and varied country of many islands and many cultures. The Javanese dominate the country. Not only is the island centrally located, but the rich soil and hard-working people has turned the island into the economic powerhouse driving the country’s economy. Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, is located on the island’s north shore, and is the subject of a separate ITM map. This map concentrates on the island’s many charms: the temples of Yogyakarta, the colonial architecture of Surabaya, and the rustic charm of mountainous East Java. The map abounds in insets, including central Jakarta at 1:25 000, but also Cirebon, Bandung, and Solo, Semarang, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Malang, and Yoga to Prambanan at 1:90,000, and the Dieng Plateau at 1:35,000. ITMB is very pleased to be expanding our coverage of New Zealand with the release of this fourth title (the others being the country map, the South Island, and Auckland). At this expanded scale, it takes both sides of the sheet to show off the attractions of the northern half of NZ, but the shape of the island provides ample space for a large inset of Auckland and more modest ones of the city region and of New Zealand’s public transport network on side one. Side two has an excellent inset map of Wellington and includes the northernmost portion of South Island, with the ferry connection linking the two islands. At this scale, the place names and road network are very readable, and there is lots of room to show attractions and touristic points of interest. The map also includes our Top Attractions list of must-sees, such as Napier Rotorua, and the Hobbitown Movie Set of Lord of the Rings fame.

Anyone who has visited Tahiti retains fond memories of a wonderful Polynesian paradise. This map shows the major islands of French Polynesia as a series of large insets on Side 1. An overall inset map showing the many islands is also shown, but for showing detail, one must expand the individual islands. The largest one is the volcanic Tahiti Nui, with the capital city of Pape’ete (or Papeete in English), for which a detailed inset map is included. Most visitors stay in the vicinity of Papeete, along the coast. We show several popular resorts. There is a good circular road around the island’s shoreline, but no roads in the interior. The island is joined to another, called Tahiti Iti, or Little Tahiti, and roads extend partway around this less-developed part of the combined island. Most of the other islands are rarely visited, although they have resorts, beaches, and a lifestyle of their own.
