Second, we have been able to improve the accuracy of the road information enormously at the better scale, and third we are making progress in developing a new series of travel maps for Africa by publishing the first of what we hope will become a new regional map covering Africa from top to bottom, or from Cape to Cairo, as Uncle Cecil used to say. Anyone who has been in this business for a few years remembers Ordnance Survey and their brilliantly detailed artwork. They should also remember that OS guarded this artwork religiously. That all changed when the then head of government in the UK, one soon-forgotten Gordon Brown, decreed that commercial OS artwork had to be discontinued and artwork had to be made more freely available to users. I expected an outpouring of new artwork by private UK firms. It did not happen; in fact, the range of travel maps decreased dramatically. However, OS artwork is still an excellent source of mapping artwork. This is a wonderful double-sided, detailed map of Scotland. It is both extremely detailed and accurate. We have added symbols for parks, historic sites, battlefields, country hotels, and anything else that we think would interest visitors. Anyone who has visited Tahiti retains fond memories of a wonderful Polynesian paradise. This map shows the major islands of French Polynesia as a series of large insets on Side 1. An overall inset map showing the many islands is also shown, but for showing detail, one must expand the individual islands. The largest one is the volcanic Tahiti Nui, with the capital city of Pape’ete (or Papeete in English), for which a detailed inset map is included. Most visitors stay in the vicinity of Papeete, along the coast. We show several popular resorts. There is a good circular road around the island’s shoreline, but no roads in the interior. The island is joined to another, called Tahiti Iti, or Little Tahiti, and roads extend partway around this less-developed part of the combined island. Most of the other islands are rarely visited, although they have resorts, beaches, and a lifestyle of their own. Norway is one of the most popular countries for visitors in Europe. We spent an interesting time researching this map in Norway, travelling all the way north to Nordkapp, a trip that took a week. We were actually on a cruise ship for much of the travel time. We also discovered a bookstore in Narvik that sells travel maps and obtained valuable research material there. Norway, as a country, is one of the prime travel destinations in the world – lots of wide open spaces, all the mod-cons, and fantastic scenery. Obviously, Nordkapp is a huge attraction, being the most northerly part of Europe one can access, but Norway has lots of other attractions. Roads in Norway tend to be of a very good quality, but are mostly two-laned and winding. There are coastal ferries joining isolated communities from south to north, and lots of ferries for car crossings of fiords. We took a local ferry from Alesund into the interior of Stor Fiord. ITMB published a map of the more densely populated southern half of the province a number of years ago, and we have been asked to give the same emphasis to the northern half ever since. Here it is! Side 1 is of the western portion, including the Alaskan Panhandle, with the route followed by cruise ships heading north and clearly delineates the border between Canada and the USA that nearly erupted into warfare (54 40 or fight). It also shows the Stewart Highway heading north towards the Yukon, with its branch leading to Hyder, Alaska, the only place in the USA that uses Canadian money and does all its banking in Canada. Our solution has been to portray the south portion on one side at a detailed scale, to enable such locations as Rio and Sao Paulo a better scale to help travellers, while mapping the north at a respectable but more limited scale on the That said, one still needs both sides of the map, as Brasilia, the capital, falls on the north side other side of the sheet.
