We are pleased to release this brand new ITMB title. Abu Dhabi is one of the leading Emirates that are rapidly becoming vacation heavens for Europeans who don't want the long flights to Asian destinations. The city is so modern it almost squeaks. The palace is a world-class wonder, the seafront Corniche is a marvelous beach, and the central shopping area offers everything from hamburgers to Gucci bags. Motorways now connect the city state to nearby Dubai and to Oman, with a recently-completed one along the coastline to the Saudi border. The reverse side of the map is an updated edition of the entire United Arab Emirates and most of Oman, with new motorways seemingly everywhere. A large inset map of central Dubai is included, along with a good one of Muscat. We docked at Abu Dhabi's cruise ship terminal during our visit and were impressed by the extent of urbanization of the city. The very name Muscat and Oman entices one! The peninsula at the access point to the Persian/Arabian Gulf sounds very exotic – and it is! This double-sided map focuses on the city and region of Muscat on side one at a detailed scale, noting the Grand Mosque, the Mutrah Souk, and the Royal Opera House as well as showing hotels, shopping areas, and other sites of touristic interest. Muscat used to be a British protectorate, but is now part of Oman, albeit physically separated from it by a portion of the UAE. The country fills side 2. Oman is portrayed as a north-south alignment, as it is long and not particularly wide, and nicely fills the sheet, with an inset of Salalah, close to the Yemeni border. Connections to nearby Abu Dhabi and Dubai are also shown. Oman is a haven of peaceful co-existence, and tourists are welcome, so this map is designed to encourage visitors

We were in Oman a couple of weeks before year end and can certify that it is a safe and attractive country to visit; completely different from its neighbours. The main city is Muscat, which has an inset map on the country side of the sheet, as well as a map of Salalah, in the far west of the country. The road network of the country is well developed, with several crossings to the UAE. Unfortunately, none are available to Saudi Arabia, and the crossing to Yemen, while open, is not advised, due to on-going fighting. Oman also has two enclaves surrounded by UAE; a small one north of Fujairah, and another at the northern tip of the peninsula, separating the Gulf of Oman from the Persian (or Arabic) Gulf. As technology improves, we are able to produce more detailed maps than was previously possible. Such is the case with Ireland, a part of the world consisting of two countries divided by religion and history. Preparing a map of Ireland as a double-sided map means cutting the island into two geographic portions. Side 1 covers the northern half. This includes the portion known as Northern Ireland, or Ulster, and a fair portion of the Republic of Ireland, or Eire; essentially everything north of Dublin and west to Counties Mayo and Galway. Side 2 covers the southern half of the island from just north of Dublin to the outer tips of County Kerry. It also includes a nice inset map of central Dublin. Naturally, all motorways and roads are included, as are touristic attractions, camping/caravan sites, ferry terminals, and Top Attractions. The city of Lisbon is one of the most attractive in Europe. It is an ancient city, but most of its architecture dates from the Victorian era. It has a fascinating number of tram lines, and the trams tend to be an experience worth the trip. One graces our cover. There is no cheaper way to explore this city than to climb aboard and let the rails decide your destination! Coverage extends from the northern and western motorways to the southerly Rio Tejo and the national museum, so shows the city quite comprehensively. Almost half of the map area is of the massive Monsanto Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world. The reverse side is equally important, in that it presents our first-ever map dedicated to showing the charms of the entire country of Portugal. It would be impractical to portray the entire urban area on one map and have it make sense, so we show the portion of greatest interest to visitors, from the Chapultepec Zoological Park in the west to the incredibly busy Tapo Bus Terminal in the east, and from the railway station in the north to the southern east-west motorway just south of the main hospital complex. Much of MC’s touristic interest is concentrated in the Zona Rosa, Reforma, and Zocalo segments of the city centre, and these are shown in detail, noting hotels, major restaurants, shopping areas, and points of interest. I use the word ‘country’ in its truest sense, as Wales was invaded and taken over by the English centuries ago. Regardless, the Welsh language and Welsh culture continue to flourish, although English is commonly spoken. We have visited Wales on several occasions and find that the attractions are so numerous that we could never see them all. There are too many castles to count, but some of the best preserved in the British Isles are in Wales, notable Caernarfon, but nearby Harlech is a World Heritage Site. St, David’s must be one of the smallest and loveliest cathedrals in the world, and Tintern Abbey ruins among the most poignant anywhere. Australia is a very large country. It is also very unevenly populated, with most of the people living close to the eastern coast. Brisbane is the second-largest city in Australia, and the preferred landing spot for most international flights. This makes Brisbane an attractive point of entry to Australia for visitors. The city has several attractions, which are noted on the map, several transit lines, also noted, and an interesting ferry boat system along the Brisbane River. The city is also the capital of Queensland, which occupies the north-east quarter of the continent and fills the second side of the map. Our map of the state stretches from the northern tip of Cape York to beyond the southern boundary of the state to just south of Sydney, in New South Wales. An inset map of central Sydney is included, but the strength of the map is the fact that Queensland is covered in excellent detail. ITMB also has a separate map of Sydney.
