    Italy is a very densely populated country, requiring sectional maps to portray its complex road/rail network in sufficient detail to make sense. This is a brand new title for ITMB, covering the central portion of the peninsula from Naples north to Florence on side one, and includes a large inset map of Sardinia. Side two covers the vast expanse of the north of the country, from the high alpine valleys of D’Aosta and Trentino to the plains of northern Italy and the coastal provinces of the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines. The immediate border areas of France and Switzerland are included, but the extensive plate name index covers most of those countries. Motorways (in blue) tend to be toll highways. The Andes mountain chain is the southern extension of the Sierra Nevada chain through Mexico and Central America, which is, in turn the southern extension of the Rocky Mountain chain from Alaska to the Mexican border. The Andes is a magnificent series of high mountains that enters Colombia and spreads southwards through Ecuador and Peru all the way to southern Patagonia. The map is double-sided, with the Northern Andes on one side and the other side divided into two side-by-side maps portraying the Central Andes and the Southern Andes. Thus, the map coverage focuses on the Andes themselves, rather than on all of South America. We didn't suspect, when we started developing this title, that Mauna Loa Volcano would erupt as soon as our map of the national park was printed, but it did! It is on the news every night, and a marvelous touristic attraction. How many of us can ever see a massive eruption of molten lava? Now, we can! (at least, from a safe distance). The national park occupies one side of the map and is the latest in ITMB's series of national parks. By the nature of such parks, we show all the features and elevations, but in this case, we'll add the proviso that heights and lava flows are changing the landscape on a daily basis. Volcanoes are sort of like elephants-they go where they please! The reverse side of the sheet is a map of Big Island, where the park is located. Its name comes from being the largest island in area of all the Hawaiian archipelago. The map …

Finally, ITMB releases its long-awaited re-worked map of the wonderful South America city of Quito. The city is squeezed in between mountain ranges and, the entire city stretches from north (on the right-hand side of the map) to the south. The "bottom" of the map is, actually the eastern portion. A regional inset map clarifies the situation. The street network is clearly shown, along with the rapid line bus way and the city's Metro. The Old Town is perhaps the most interesting portion of the city for visitors and is on the left-hand portion of the map. Last month, we introduced two new maps of Idaho and Montana; this month, we wish to introduce Nevada. As a state, Nevada is mostly desert-like and is lightly populated. Its two major urban areas, Las Vegas and Reno, are extremely popular travel destinations. In addition, Nevada offers the Hoover Dam, one of the seven wonders of the modern world, a national park with 5,000-year-old pine trees, America’s second deepest lake (Tahoe), the eighth highest mountain peak in the USA, and the biggest air force bombing range in the world (Nellis). The map is double-sided, and covers northern California on the other side.     The State of Western Australia occupies the western third of the continental country of Australia. The main city is Perth, in the southwest portion, and this is the part of the State with the best land and the most people. Much of the interior is arid desert-like grassland with shallow lakes that often dry out. The road network in the south is generally paved highways and secondary roads, with one road and one rail line heading east to SZ and the rest of the country. Roads in the north tend to be dirt, with the exception of the highway going towards Darwin in NT. There are no roads through the Great Sandy Desert, but the Canning Stock Route crosses the eastern fringe, going north-south. One needs an expensive permit to drive this hazardous track. Most of the attractions of the State are to be found fairly close to the coastline. Most of the larger urban areas tend to have been named after British places, such as Albany, Exmouth, and Port Hedland, but many names have been adopted from …

Most visitors to the UK fly into one of London's four airports and combine a visit to the city with an opportunity to travel to various destinations within striking distance of London. England is so incredibly rich in heritage and scenic attractions that it is extremely difficult to portray the country as a map of the entire entity. As a result, England lends itself nicely to be divided into a central/northern portion and a southern portion. To fit areas as diverse as Cornwall and Norwich on one sheet, one needs to have a vertical frame, with Devon/Cornwall up to the top of Wales on one side and Wiltshire to Kent up to York (admittedly, not normally considered to be part of 'southern', but vertically, that's what happens.     As technology improves, we are able to produce more detailed maps than was previously possible. Such is the case with Ireland, a part of the world consisting of two countries divided by religion and history. Preparing a map of Ireland as a double-sided map means cutting the island into two geographic portions. Side 1 covers the northern half. This includes the portion known as Northern Ireland, or Ulster, and a fair portion of the Republic of Ireland, or Eire; essentially everything north of Dublin and west to Counties Mayo and Galway. Side 2 covers the southern half of the island from just north of Dublin to the outer tips of County Kerry. It also includes a nice inset map of central Dublin. Naturally, all motorways and roads are included, as are touristic attractions, camping/caravan sites, ferry terminals, and Top Attractions. This is a very detailed travel map of the island, printed on waterproof paper for durability. We had great fun driving around Ireland researching this map. I…

    This is a new title for ITMB, in that it is the first time we have mapped the State of Washington. The actual area of the map includes Portland and northern Oregon and Vancouver and the border area with the USA. A small portion of Idaho is also shown. Wilderness campsites, parks such as Rainier, Olympic, and Baker, are shown. Seattle as a city, stretches far beyond the confines of a practical map in that it stretches from Everett to Tacoma. Our map covers from the University in the north to the Beacon Hill neighbourhood in the south and from the waterfront to Lake Washington. An inset map of the greater region is included. The rapid transit line is also included on the map and on the back cover. The reverse side of the sheet shows all the roads of Washington State in excellent Olympic, and Baker, state parks, touristic sites, beaches, ferry routes, native reserves, motorways, and even the ill-fated Hanford nuclear site are included. Als overzichtskaart goed te gebruiken.    We were in Oman a couple of weeks before year end and can certify that it is a safe and attractive country to visit; completely different from its neighbours. The main city is Muscat, which has an inset map on the country side of the sheet, as well as a map of Salalah, in the far west of the country. The road network of the country is well developed, with several crossings to the UAE. Unfortunately, none are available to Saudi Arabia, and the crossing to Yemen, while open, is not advised, due to on-going fighting. Oman also has two enclaves surrounded by UAE; a small one north of Fujairah, and another at the northern tip of the peninsula, separating the Gulf of Oman from the Persian (or Arabic) Gulf.     The USA is blessed with many wonderful parks, forests, and natural monuments that have been preserved for all to enjoy. The second most-visited national park (after Yellowstone) is Yosemite (pronounced Yo-sem-i-tee), in the eastern portion of central California. Side 1 covers the central portion of California from a bit north of Sacramento to greater Los Angeles and focusses on major motorways and highways. A list of Top Attractions is included. Side 2 concentrates on Yosemite National Park, located east of the San Francisco region close to Nevada. There are several paved access roads into the park from the west and one from the east (none from the north or south). There are numerous camping/RV areas inside the park. As well as motels and resorts, mostly located in the vicinity of Yosemite Village The Top Attractions are all noted, including Glacier Point, the Mariposa Grove od giant sequoia trees, and Olmstead Point. Just outside the park boundary, visitors can ride the Sugar Pine Railroad, a restored historic line. The map is printed on waterproof stone paper for durability, and is decomposable. No plastic was used in its preparation, nor were any trees torn down.
