Wandelgids Thames Path | Trailblazer Guides
Wandelgids Thames Path | Trailblazer Guides
This book follows the Thames Path National Trail from the river's source in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in London. Officially 184 miles (294km) in length (although the actual distance you walk will depend on a number of decisions you make en route), the path meanders, accompanied by its watery muse, through pristine and tranquil countryside, past historic sites and buildings, via pub, lock, weir, and the occasional scattering of waterfowl, to a city, once the fulcrum of an empire, and now the heart of modern day England. The river, responsible for the metropolis' very being, tells tales, inspires artists, accommodates swans, geese, and water voles, reflects the silhouettes of red kites and kingfishers, provides employment, entices adventure, and allows time for carefree pilgrims to procrastinate and think. Following its banks is a grand way to go for a ramble. The path begins, as the river does, in a meadow in the Cotswolds; its upper reaches lonely and wild, the meadows and…

Surviving As A Form Of Life (Paperback)
Surviving As A Form Of Life (Paperback)
Do all individuals embrace the ideal of self-development in their lives? Frans Vosman argues that there exists a cultural group of people who prioritize something entirely different: survival. Survival entails coping with the harsh realities of daily life and the challenges it presents. Vosman advocates for the use of the concepts of “form of life” and “cultural class” in political-ethical research. “Form of life” allows us to move away from the ontological focus in care ethics, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human beings and their inherent caregiving nature. “Cultural class” helps to challenge hegemonic ideals. Survival, as a phenomenon, is so pervasive that we often fail to recognize it as a way of life. Our fixation on ideals blinds us to this reality. In this lecture, Vosman skillfully sheds light on this reality, offering intellectual clarity and deep empathy for those living under conditions of survival. Frans Vosman (1952-2020) was a Professor of Care Ethics at the

Chronic non-specific low back pain (Paperback)
Chronic non-specific low back pain (Paperback)
Chronic non-specific low back pain is assumed to be a multi-factorial affliction, implying that a number of different risk factors contribute to its development and persistence. After onset, prognostic factors can potentially predict the future course. Risk factors for the development of chronic pain (i.e. transition from acute to chronic pain) are well documented in the literature. However, when pain becomes persistent, less knowledge is available on the risk factors for future outcome. Increased knowledge on the prognostic factors for chronic complaints will allow to better inform and advise patients, by supporting clinical decisions about the type of treatment and identifying patients at risk of a poor outcome. The objective of this thesis was to describe the clinical course of chronic non-specific low back pain in patients referred to a rehabilitation centre in tertiary care, to identify prognostic factors for recovery, and to analyse the influence of various outcomes and

Reisverhaal The Realm of the Punisher | Tom Sykes
Reisverhaal The Realm of the Punisher | Tom Sykes
In June 2016, Rodrigo Duterte won the Philippine presidential election by a landslide. Infamous for his bombastic temper and un-PC wisecracks, he is waging a brutal drug war that has killed more than 12,000 people so far.   Over the last nine years, British writer Tom Sykes has travelled extensively in the Philippines in order to understand the Duterte phenomenon, interviewing friends and enemies of ‘The Punisher’ – as he is known – in politics, the media, the arts and civil society. Sykes witnesses anti-government demonstrations in the capital Manila and visits the provincial city of Davao, where Duterte began his crusade against crime using police and vigilante death squads. By delving into Duterte’s troubled childhood of violent rebellion, Sykes discovers what motivates the man today in his pursuit of a merciless ‘war on the poor’ – as Amnesty has described it – that has no end in sight.   The Realm of the Punisher also examines oppressed and marginalized groups in the modern Phili…

Step into the heart of Starfleet intrigue with our exquisite one sixth scale collectible figure of Lieutenant Valeris, the mysterious Vulcan officer who plays a pivotal role in the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. With her complex motivations and striking presence, Valeris is an iconic character in Star Trek lore, representing a different side of the conflict-a thrilling enigma wrapped in secrets and conflicting loyalties.Portrayed by the talented Kim Cattrall, Lieutenant Valeris is a brilliant, logically-minded officer whose allegiance is tested in a story steeped in subterfuge and betrayal. Unlike General Chang, whose intent was to sabotage peace through overt aggression, Valeris embodies a more conflicted role, driven by a misguided sense of loyalty to her people and a passion for preserving their strength, even at the cost of betrayal. Her complex narrative creates a fascinating contrast to Chang's villainy, illuminating the multifaceted nature of loyalty and confl…

Atlas: Makerspaces in Public Libraries in The Netherlands (Paperback)
Atlas: Makerspaces in Public Libraries in The Netherlands (Paperback)
Public libraries want to contribute to an inclusive and innovative society and aim to enable their patrons to acquire the necessary 21st century skills. Dutch public libraries are therefore gradually adding more and more activities to their curriculum, teaching these different types of skills, such as 'invention literacy'. They also often provide a 'performative space' (i.e. a makerspace) for their patrons. This means library spaces are no longer dominated by books, but rather reflect the current development in libraries' core business, moving from collections to connections in order to serve their local communities. The KB, the National Library of The Netherlands, participated in the KIEM project Performative Spaces in Dutch Public Libraries. Stepping Stones of Inclusive Innovation, researching the development of performative spaces in libraries. This project, a collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the Delft University of Technology, fits the KBs

Changing Values on Water in Delta Cities (Paperback)
Changing Values on Water in Delta Cities (Paperback)
The thesis develops an empirically tested analytical framework which links value theory with planning and design practices to investigate context-specific spatial transformations as a result of individual and collective value judgements. Four key aspects of water values including flood safety, as well as economic, social and environmental values, are studied, and their interrelationships are discussed. Morphological analyses and value assessments are conducted to explore in what sense spatial changes can be considered an expression of the changing values and what we can learn from it to deal with complex spatial situations. The empirical studies are based on the long-term spatial development of Guangzhou as representative of a historical and rapidly growing delta city in China. Three development stages are illustrated to show different patterns of water-city interactions, the waterways city (before the 1920s) that was mainly structured by natural forces including natural waterways, the

Productomschrijving

With this work in the form of a book, Maria Lalou & Skafte Aymo-Boot present the phenomenon of a particular pending architecture mutely present all over Athens. The concrete skeletons of polykatoikia - multi-story apartment buildings - are emblematic of the development of modern Greece throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The book deals with the politics of urban space by treating the unfinished buildings as study objects and tracing their individual histories. Through the words of current owners and by means of photographs, archival documents and found artefacts, a different chronicle of the development of modern Arthens is taking shape. Essays by Brooke Holmes, Platon Issaias and Elpida Karaba critically touch upon the phenomenon from different perspectives. Moving in scale from a tactile portrait of one specific concrete structure to a complete building index, the Atlas introduces a method for extracting forgotten memories and hidden structures, suggesting an
