With this work in the form of a book, Maria Lalou & Skafte Aymo-Boot present the phenomenon of a particular pending architecture mutely present all over Athens. The concrete skeletons of polykatoikia - multi-story apartment buildings - are emblematic of the development of modern Greece throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The book deals with the politics of urban space by treating the unfinished buildings as study objects and tracing their individual histories. Through the words of current owners and by means of photographs, archival documents and found artefacts, a different chronicle of the development of modern Arthens is taking shape. Essays by Brooke Holmes, Platon Issaias and Elpida Karaba critically touch upon the phenomenon from different perspectives. Moving in scale from a tactile portrait of one specific concrete structure to a complete building index, the Atlas introduces a method for extracting forgotten memories and hidden structures, suggesting an

Powerskin conference (Paperback)
Powerskin conference (Paperback)
The building skin has evolved enormously over the past decades. Energy performance and environmental quality of buildings are significantly determined by the building envelope. The façade has experienced a change in its role as an adaptive climate control system that leverages the synergies between form, material, mechanical and energy systems in an integrated design. The PowerSkin Conference aims to address the role of building skins to accomplish a carbon neutral building stock. Topics such as building operation, embodied energy, energy generation and storage in context of envelope, energy and environment are considered. The 2019 issue of the conference PowerSkin focuses on the digital processes in façade design and construction, showcasing presentations about recent scientific research and developments in the field. The Technical University of Munich, Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Auer, TU Darmstadt, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Schneider and TU Delft, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Knaack are hosting the

Surviving As A Form Of Life (Paperback)
Surviving As A Form Of Life (Paperback)
Do all individuals embrace the ideal of self-development in their lives? Frans Vosman argues that there exists a cultural group of people who prioritize something entirely different: survival. Survival entails coping with the harsh realities of daily life and the challenges it presents. Vosman advocates for the use of the concepts of “form of life” and “cultural class” in political-ethical research. “Form of life” allows us to move away from the ontological focus in care ethics, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human beings and their inherent caregiving nature. “Cultural class” helps to challenge hegemonic ideals. Survival, as a phenomenon, is so pervasive that we often fail to recognize it as a way of life. Our fixation on ideals blinds us to this reality. In this lecture, Vosman skillfully sheds light on this reality, offering intellectual clarity and deep empathy for those living under conditions of survival. Frans Vosman (1952-2020) was a Professor of Care Ethics at the

Stedebouwkundig(e) ontwerpen in woorden (Paperback)
Stedebouwkundig(e) ontwerpen in woorden (Paperback)
The realisation of an urban design involves many players, such as designers, critics, politicians, journalists, public relations specialists and residents. In order to consult with each other they make use of drawings, but also frequently of words, to be able to interpret the drawn objects in the plans. But are these urbanistic notions used by everyone in the same way? And have there been noticeable changes in their usage or meaning over time? This urbanistic and linguistic doctoral research addresses these questions. To define the scope of the research, words have been selected that refer to concrete, physical design phenomena in three so-called semantic fields: the structure of the city plan (for example, stad [city] and buurt [neighbourhood]), types of public spaces (for example, straat [street] and park [park]) and types of buildings (for example, huis [house] and winkel [shop]). As a further restriction, the use of such words has been investigated in texts written by five types of

OASE 112 (Paperback)
OASE 112 (Paperback)
In recent decades, the field of architecture has witnessed a fundamental shift under the banner of 'ecology': from the innovation in energy technologies to the use of circular materials and climate-neutral building solutions - today, more than ever, the construction of a building seems to be dominated by an ecological awareness. At the same time, such sustainable thinking often places ecological questions outside of the design itself, in the hands of experts and within the logic of quantitative calculation, while the building disappears into the ephemerality of life cycles and network models. By focusing on the intersection between ecology and aesthetics in architecture, however, this issue of OASE situates the thinking about such issues at the heart of the discipline. It asks: how do ecological questions materialise in architecture? And what aesthetic practices are able to shape the perception of these ecological questions? Through a series of concrete projects, the contributions in

OASE Journal for Architecture (Paperback)
OASE Journal for Architecture (Paperback)
* Examines the resurgence of the architect's role as a repairer of buildings * What if the reusability of every element of a building was examined before it was used? In the crisis following the First World War (1929 - 1940), the Modern Movement of the 1920s supported a programme of social reform. This included the rationalization and industrialization of building processes, while efficient forms of construction were also an important source of architectural form. Nowadays, the need for economical building was based not only on purely financial considerations, but also on the limited availability of material and energy resources. In the process, 'building' increasingly becomes a practice of 'repairing'. Remodeling and building on represents a paradigm shift for the discipline of architecture, with architects having to reinvent themselves as bricoleurs, tinkerers or simply as repair experts. This requires not only the latest technology, but also age-old knowledge. Drawing on
