Walking in the Thames Valley offers 25 challenging circular walks around the River Thames and River Kennet in the south of England, taking in the Southern Chilterns, the Berkshire and North Hampshire Downs, Southern Oxfordshire and the eastern edge of Wiltshire. All routes are within easy reach of Reading, Newbury, Abingdon and London. Towards the capstone of the European Bronze Age, in an area stretching from the Carpathians in the East to the North Sea in the West, vast cremation grave cemeteries occur that are perhaps better known as 'urnfields.' Today some 700 of these burial sites have come to light in the Netherlands alone. In this corner of Europe, also known as the 'Lower-Rhine-Basin,' these cemeteries are often characterised by vast collections of small burial mounds under which the cremated remains of decedents were buried in small shaft-like pits. In many a case the cremated remains had been put in urns first, providing these cemeteries with their very name. Though rich in numbers, urnfield graves are often described as 'poor' and 'simple' as only in rare occasions decedents were provided with grave gifts. Based on the 'theory formation of entrepreneurship', as has been developed over the past few decades by political economists, sociologists and social-economic historians on the notion 'entrepreneurship', this study will focus on how entrepreneurship in the Netherlands, specifi cally during 'Trade Capitalism' (1350-1815), took shape and what its contribution has been to the period of 'Total Capitalism' (as from the late1980s). Three sub-periods during "Trade Capitalism' will be studied. The first sub-period runs from 1350 to 1580 and is considered to be the upbeat to the 'first modern economy' in the world. In the second sub-period, running from 1580 to approximately 1670 (the so-called Dutch "Golden Age"), this fi rst modern economy reached its absolute zenith.
