Met de hulp van Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) en offi cier van justitie Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) stelt Batman zich ten doel de georganiseerde misdaad in Gotham eens en voor altijd uit te roeien. Dit driemanschap werkt heel goed. Maar al snel valt het drietal ten prooi aan een opkomend misdadig meesterbrein dat The Joker (Heath Ledger) genoemd wordt. Deze stort Gotham in anarchie en dwingt Batman bijna de grens tussen held en wreker over te gaan.

    Het is acht jaar geleden dat Batman (Christian Bale) alles opofferde door de schuld op zich te nemen voor de dood van Harvey Dent, en daarna in de nacht verdween.
