Star Trek: The Original Series werd voor het eerst uitgezonden op televisie in september 1966 en creëerde een toegewijde fanbase die is gegroeid in de 54 jaar dat de franchise is blijven bestaan door de vele incarnaties, negen live-action en geanimeerde tv-series en 12 films. Het speelveld is verdeeld over zeven met elkaar verbonden acryl borden, gemonteerd op een zink legering basis versierd met Starship Duty Insignia, Command Division.
