Finally, ITMB releases its long-awaited re-worked map of the wonderful South America city of Quito. The city is squeezed in between mountain ranges and, the entire city stretches from north (on the right-hand side of the map) to the south. The "bottom" of the map is, actually the eastern portion. A regional inset map clarifies the situation. The street network is clearly shown, along with the rapid line bus way and the city's Metro. The Old Town is perhaps the most interesting portion of the city for visitors and is on the left-hand portion of the map.     These two countries, bordering on Iran and Uzbekistan, are in a very volatile part of the world. They constitute the heart of Central Asia; a bit difficult to reach, but definitely suitable for adventure travel. Turkmenistan occupies one side of the sheet, and Afghanistan is on the other side at a better scale. Turkmenistan stretches from the Caspian Sea to a major river (the Amuder) that forms its eastern boundary with Uzbekistan and its border with Afghanistan. An inset map of the capital just north of the Iranian border, Ashgabat, is included. On the other side, Afghanistan is a lovely country and is slowly coming out of an extremely bad situation. It is still quite an unsafe country, and fighting could flare up again in the spring. Regardless, it is a strategically important country and one that ITMB has taken quite a bit of effort to make into a significant map.     This is a new title for ITMB and the first time a separate map for that portion of the area known as Palestine and controlled by Palestinians has been published. This is essentially an attempt to show a political reality that exists, in that no one denies that both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip exist, albeit as a tightly-controlled entity that is not a country in the traditional sense of the word but is, nonetheless the homeland of millions of people and a self-governing entity. Jerusalem has been shown as an entity, without a border, in order to emphasize its importance as a unifying point of three great religions. Barricades do exist within the city, but these exist mostly to prevent clashes and reduce frictions, and we prefer to concentrate our hopes for Jerusalem as a future symbol of unity. Geographically, to fit both the southerly Gaza Strip area and the northerly West Bank portion together, it has been necessary to include large portions of Israel proper. The border has been…

United States of America (USA) Travel Reference Map has been mapped before, but the USA is a huge country, extremely developed, and almost impossible to show on a map without over-simplification. Most commercial maps use small sheets of paper and print single-sided, making it impossible to show this vast country to advantage. Well, Lan’s been hard at work developing a ‘proper’ traveller’s aid to navigating around the USA, and here it is. We printed it on an exceptionally large sheet of paper, 39” tall by 54” wide (our normal printing size is 27”x39”). To do this, we merged our four existing databases into one, then split them so that the west side is on one side and the east side on the other. What results is a very large sheet, but a map at a VERY good scale. We were able to fit in 6,765 urban areas, all the Int…

Obviously, this is a thriving market. In conjunction with several cruise ship lines, we have prepared a map of the South Pacific Ocean, which extends southwards from Hawai'i to the southern tip of New Zealand and eastwards from central Australia/Papua New Guinea to the Pitcairn Islands. Thus, it does not include the popular South East Asia and China coast routes. We think this has to change at a time when 25,000,000 people are travelling by cruise ships. At the same time, we must keep coverage area relevant for those end users of the artwork. The main city is Muscat, which has an inset map on the country side of the sheet, as well as a map of Salalah, in the far west of the country. The road network of the country is well developed, with several crossings to the UAE. Unfortunately, none are available to Saudi Arabia, and the crossing to Yemen, while open, is not advised, due to on-going fighting. Oman also has two enclaves surrounded by UAE; a small one north of Fujairah, and another at the northern tip of the peninsula, separating the Gulf of Oman from the Persian (or Arabic) Gulf. Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup of soccer in November 2022. This is significant. Qatar, as a destination country, is now 'on the map'. Its capital, Doha, is quite well developed, with three Metro subway lines, motorways, and a sophisticated city centre dominated by superb high-rise architecture.     For years, Iran has been vilified as a threat to world peace, a supplier of arms to fuel insurrections around the world, and an ‘enemy’ rogue state. Is it? This is a cultured and educated society that has its faults, but I suspect that much of its militancy is contrived and encouraged by a militant few to maintain their grip on power. Tehran is a huge urban area, modernizing and changing with each passing year, building subways and expressways, hotels, and schools. This is the first map of the city published outside of the country, and I think our team of researchers has created a lovely piece of artwork that can only get better as time passes. We have also updated and printed a very detailed sectional map of the northern half of Iran on the reverse side.
