    Easter Island is so isolated that it is not certain whether it is part of Polynesia or an off-shoot of South America. Geologically, it is neither; just a volcanic lump in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Its original inhabitants probably came from Polynesia; since supplanted by migrants from Chile, which is the political authority governing the island. Regardless, it is an intriguing place, famous for the Maoi - giant heads originally raised to protect family holdings. These huge, mysterious heads rest in various locations on the island and are one of the wonders of the world. This map also includes a detailed map of Santiago de Chile, the capital of Chile, for the simple reason that all flights to Easter Island originate in that city, so everyone going to Easter Island needs a map of Santiago as well.     Puerto Rico: schaal 1:190.000 US Virgin Islands: schaal 1:50.000   We are really pleased with this new edition of Puerto Rico. We spent part of August, 2020, touring the island and geo-referencing its many highways. The island is bigger and more densely road-networked than we thought, so we'll have to complete the job on our next visit, but the roads are now much more precisely shown accurately than was possible before satellite imagery. The map looks great on an Ipad screen as well. The map also shows updated inset maps of San Juan, Ponce, Mayaguez, Aguadilla, and Arecibo. Puerto Rico is part of the United States, so has all the benefits, but is internally self-governing. With this edition we are including a map of the other US colonial territory, the US Virgin Islands. The Danish West Indies was purchased from Denmark in 1917 and is an integral part of the USA, with all its benefits, but is, like Puerto Rico, neither fish nor fowl. Als overzichtskaart goed te gebruiken.    We were in Oman a couple of weeks before year end and can certify that it is a safe and attractive country to visit; completely different from its neighbours. The main city is Muscat, which has an inset map on the country side of the sheet, as well as a map of Salalah, in the far west of the country. The road network of the country is well developed, with several crossings to the UAE. Unfortunately, none are available to Saudi Arabia, and the crossing to Yemen, while open, is not advised, due to on-going fighting. Oman also has two enclaves surrounded by UAE; a small one north of Fujairah, and another at the northern tip of the peninsula, separating the Gulf of Oman from the Persian (or Arabic) Gulf. This map instills a sense of history, of adventure, and of being ‘off the beaten path’. It is the Islands and Highlands part of Scotland where Gaelic is still commonly spoken and castles abound, where one can lose oneself traversing single-lane roads across barren moors, or enjoy fishing villages such as Ullapool, or re-visit momentous events in history at Culloden.
