Reisverhaal - Natuurgids A Vulture Landscape | Ian Parsons
Reisverhaal - Natuurgids A Vulture Landscape | Ian Parsons
A Vulture Landscape is more than just a book about vultures, in the same way that these majestic flyers are more than just birds. Vultures are a crucial part of many of the world's ecosystems, and without these specialist environmental cleansers the ecosystems wouldn't work properly. A calendar year in the lives of these gargantuan raptors is explored as they live, breed, feed and fly with effortless ease across the skies of the vulture landscape that is Extremadura in central Spain. There are four species of vulture in Europe, and a fifth that is becoming more of a regular visitor as its own global population plummets. The serious conservation issues faced on a day-to-day basis by these species, and their relatives spread across the globe, are explored, issues that in many cases threaten their very survival. However, this book is a celebration of the vulture and the landscape in which it reigns. Using the latest science, his keen eye and his passion for the birds themselves, the autho…

Reisverhaal Into the Heart of Borneo | Redmond O'Hanlon
Reisverhaal Into the Heart of Borneo | Redmond O'Hanlon
'We've left a lot of men in Borneo - know what I mean?' With their SAS trainer's warnings ringing in their ears, the naturalist, Redmond O'Hanlon, and the poet, James Fenton, set out to rediscover the lost rhinoceros of Borneo. They were loaded with enough back-breaking kit to survive two months in a steaming 95 Degrees (in the shade) jungle of creeping, crawling, biting things. O'Hanlon could also rely on his encyclopaedic knowledge of the region's flora and fauna, and had read-up on how to avoid being eaten by anything (stick your thumbs in a crocodile's eyes, if you have time).   And yet they proceeded to have an adventure that neither O'Hanlon, nor his friend, nor even his guides were remotely prepared for... 'Consistently exciting, often funny, and erudite without ever being overwhelming' Punch.

Atlas The Phantom Atlas | Simon & Schuster
Atlas The Phantom Atlas | Simon & Schuster
Een fascinerend boekwerk met de grootste mythes, leugens en blunders die ooit op kaart zijn verschenen. In een luxe hardcover uitgave met mooie stofomslag. The Phantom Atlas is an atlas of the world not as it ever existed, but as it was thought to be. These marvellous and mysterious phantoms - non-existent islands, invented mountain ranges, mythical civilisations and other fictitious geography - were all at various times presented as facts on maps and atlases. This book is a collection of striking antique maps that display the most erroneous cartography, with each illustration accompanied by the story behind it. Exploration, map-making and mythology are all brought together to create a colourful tapestry of monsters, heroes and volcanoes; swindlers, mirages and murderers. Sometimes the stories are almost impossible to believe, and remarkably, some of the errors were still on display in maps published in the 21st century. Throughout much of the 19th century more than 40 different mapma…

Reisverhaal Sacred Summits | Peter Boardman
Reisverhaal Sacred Summits | Peter Boardman
Mountaintops have long been seen as sacred places, home to gods and dreams. In one climbing year Peter Boardman visited three very different sacred mountains. He began in the New Year, on the South Face of the Carstensz Pyramid in New Guinea.   This shark's fin of steep limestone walls and sweeping glaciers is the highest point between the Andes and the Himalaya, and one of the most inaccessible, rising above thick jungle inhabited by warring Stone Age tribes. During the spring Boardman was on more familiar, if hardly more reassuring, ground, making a four-man, oxygen-free attempt on the world's third highest peak, Kangchenjunga. Hurricane-force winds beat back their first two bids on the unclimbed North Ridge, but they eventually stood within feet of the summit - leaving the final few yards untrodden in deference to the inhabiting deity.   In October, he was back in the Himalaya and climbing the mountain most sacred to the Sherpas: the twin-summited Gauri Sankar. Renowned for its tec…

Lord of the Rings Replica 1/4 Rohirrim Soldier Helmet 14 cm
Lord of the Rings Replica 1/4 Rohirrim Soldier Helmet 14 cm
The people of Rohan were known to outsiders as the flaxen-haired Rohirrim, or Horse-lords, in reference to the close affinity they enjoyed with their horses. Indeed, there were no finer riders among all the tribes of Men. The Eorlingas, they named themselves, as followers of the Line of Eorl, who founded the kingdom of Rohan.A proud people, they lived mostly in small settlements scattered across the plains of The Mark, as Rohan was also known. The greatest of which was Edoras, where King Théoden dwelt in the last days of the Third Age. During the War of the Ring, Théoden led the Rohirrim to Helm's Deep when they were betrayed by Saruman the White, and later lead a great host of Riders to the aid of Gondor where they helped save the city of Minas Tirith. The Rohirrim resisted Sauron, fighting alongside their Gondorian allies at the Black Gate, and affirmed their alliance in the years after through the marriage of the Lady Éowyn of Rohan to Faramir, Steward of Gondor. Each 1:4 scale Helm …

Wandelkaart A15 Sarrabus da Costa Rei a Porto Corallo | Abies
Sarrabus is a territory that is not known by everybody yet. Here lies its charm and this has made possible to keep this environmental area out of big building speculations and also out of history. In fact it preserves little traces of the past, and paradoxically the remains from the prehistoric age are more meaningful than those back to more recent times. We can find traces from the most remote past not far from the State Road SS125, that from Muravera goes to Costa Rei, by visiting the nuraghe Murtas, the nuraghe S’Aqua Secis and the megalithic complexes of Scalas and Cuili Piras. They are about ten menhirs, almost fully intact, arranged in groups and fixed in the ground in the original orthostatic position. They have been put in relation with the position of the sun and the moon, at dawn and at sunset. In fact they were used as a very precise astronomic calendar but also for religious purposes since they represented both the masculine divinity and the fertility according to the wors…

Reisverhaal Walking with Nomads | Alice Morrison
Reisverhaal Walking with Nomads | Alice Morrison
'Transports the reader to another world' Sunday Express Adventurer and TV presenter Alice Morrison takes the reader on three remarkable and inspirational journeys across Morocco, from the Sahara to the Atlas mountains, to reveal the growing challenges faced by our planet. Accompanied only by three Amazigh Muslim men and their camels, Scottish explorer Alice Morrison set off to find a hidden world. During her journey along the Draa river, she encountered dinosaur footprints and discovereda lost city, as well as what looked like a map of an ancient spaceship, all the while trying to avoid landmines, quicksand and the deadly horned viper. Few places better illustrate the reality of climate change and the encroachment of the desert than a dried-out riverbed, but this also means a constant search for the next source of water. Meeting other nomads as they travel, Alice also gets to hear a side of their lives few ever access, as the women would never be allowed to speak to men from outsid…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Okavango Delta - Tourist Map of the Okavango Delta and Linyanti Botswana - Veronica Roodt | Shell
Wegenkaart - landkaart Okavango Delta - Tourist Map of the Okavango Delta and Linyanti Botswana - Veronica Roodt | Shell
The map: The map of the Okavango and Linyanti was compiled by using LANDSAT satellite images. The main reason for a tourist map of the area is to indicate the localities of the lodges as well as the wildlife management areas in which they occur. Tourists to the Okavango often visit more than one lodge and this will give them a good idea of where they have been. On the back of the map are enlargements of the different tourist areas, which shows more detail of the landscape. There are no GPS co-ordinates on the Okavango map as all the Wildlife areas consist of private concessions, which are not open to the general public. The roads in the private concessions have also not been indicated as this may mislead the self-driving public, making them thin…

Reisverhaal Galapagos Crusoes | Bryan Nelson, June Nelson
Reisverhaal Galapagos Crusoes | Bryan Nelson, June Nelson
A new, updated version of the celebrated 1968 title, Galapagos: Islands of Birds, by the renowned late ornithologist Bryan Nelson, with additional, previously unpublished reminiscences and lively and irreverent memories from his wife June. This timely reissue breathes new life into a classic work of natural history that will appeal to bird-lovers and Galapagos-lovers alike. It is as memorable for its groundbreaking descriptions of Galapagos wildlife as for June's naked appearance in the News of the World accompanied by a quote from the Duke of Edinburgh. In 1964 the late Bryan Nelson, a zoologist, and his wife June spent a year living on two uninhabited, waterless Galapagos islands studying the three species of booby ('we couldn't resist also studying the great frigatebird and waved albatross, too' says June). Bryan's book, Galapagos: Islands of Birds was published in 1968 and, although by necessity a scientific study, his light touch and the extraordinary hardships and delights of liv…

Reisverhaal Minarets in the Mountains | Tharik Hussain
A magical, eye-opening account of a journey into a Europe that rarely makes the news and is in danger of being erased altogether. Another Europe. A Europe few people believe exists and many wish didn't.   Muslim Europe. Londoner Tharik Hussain sets off with his wife and young daughters around the Western Balkans, home to the largest indigenous Muslim population in Europe, and explores the regions of Eastern Europe where Islam has shaped places and people for more than half a millennium.   Encountering blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims, visiting mystical Islamic lodges clinging to the side of mountains, and praying in mosques older than the Sistine Chapel, he paints a picture of a hidden Muslim Europe, a vibrant place with a breath…

Productomschrijving

Once headhunters under the rule of White Rajahs and briefly colonised before independence within Malaysia, the Iban Dayaks of Borneo are one of the world's most extraordinary indigenous tribes, possessing ancient traditions and a unique way of life. As a young man Erik Jensen settled in Sarawak where he lived with the Iban for seven years, learning their language and the varied rites and practices of their lives. He was also witness to the great and often shattering changes they faced then and continue to face today. The plentiful harvests, abundant game and rivers teeming with fish of their remembered past have long since disappeared - destroyed by restrictions on settlement and, ironically, by forest conservation. The Iban's animist beliefs are slowly being replaced by the imported religions of Christianity and Islam and their traditional ways by modern schooling and medicine. In this compelling and beautifully-wrought memoir, Erik Jensen reveals the challenges facing the Iban as they adapt to another century, whilst fighting to preserve their identity and singular place in the world.

Haunting, yet hopeful, Where Hornbills Fly opens a window onto a vanishing world and paints a remarkable portrait of this fragile tribe, which continues to survive deep in the heart of Borneo.
