Wandelgids - Pelgrimsroute Gudbrandsdalleden - The St. Olav Way | Op Vrije Voeten
Wandelgids - Pelgrimsroute Gudbrandsdalleden - The St. Olav Way | Op Vrije Voeten
Hiking guide for the pilgrimage route to Nidaros. In English! A full description of the route between Oslo and Trondheim.   Whoever embarks on the 643-kilometer pilgrimage route from Oslo to Trondheim follows in the footsteps of the medieval pilgrims who made their way to the tomb of Saint Olav. Nidaros, the ancient name of Trondheim, was one of the four most important pilgrimage sites of the Middle Ages, along with Santiago de Compostela, Rome and Jerusalem. Since 1997, this route has been made accessible again for today's hikers. The popularity of the Olav’s way is growing, but compared to the route to Santiago, it is an oasis of tranquillity.   The path crosses the entire 'drop' of Norway, a land full of pure air and endless nature. The hiker walks through farmland, alongside Norway's largest lake, through the wooded Gudbrandsdal which gets higher and narrower, crosses the rugged Dovrefjell plateau and descends to the Trondheimfjord and Nidaros Cathedral. This guide for the Olav’s …

Pelgrimsroute - Wandelgids London to Walsingham Camino | Trailblazer Guides
Pelgrimsroute - Wandelgids London to Walsingham Camino | Trailblazer Guides
Full colour, larger format Inspirational guide describing the 13 stages of the pilgrimage route from London to the shrines at Walsingham in Norfolk. The book follows a resurrected route which has now been given official recognition by the Confraternity of St James, better known for their organisation of the famous Camino de Santiago in Spain. That means any pilgrim who walks at least 25km of it, and gathers pilgrim stamps along the way, will be able to use that 25km towards the total of 100km that must be walked in order to get the official Passport/Credencial when they arrive at Santiago. In his foreword to this new guide, the Archbishop of York writes: "I have walked to Walsingham twice ... [and] ... I walked the Camino del Norte to Santiago. I am therefore delighted that the route from London to Walsingham is now better established and therefore more available for other pilgrims and also drawn into the network of pilgrimages under the umbrella of the Confraternity of Saint James. Reisverhaal Call of the Kingfisher | Nick Penny
Reisverhaal Call of the Kingfisher | Nick Penny
Call of the Kingfisher is the enchanting debut from composer and wildlife recordist, Nick Penny. This love letter to a short stretch of Northamptonshire's River Nene celebrates all the wild things that live there, especially the kingfishers. Uniquely, it comes with bonus audio content to complement the text, accessed via QR codes. For four decades, Penny has walked beside the river at Oundle - a lovely but little-known part of England where where Clark Gable and thousands of American airmen were stationed during World War II, and where bandleader Glenn Miller performed his final airfield concert before going missing in action. For a whole year, Penny gave the waterway all the time it asked for. The more attention he gave, the more he saw the kingfishers and heard their high whistling calls. Call of the Kingfisher relates a year by the river, the author's experiences there and the people he meets. Other strands weave around the feathered protagonist: explorations of history and landsca…

Wandelgids Pilgrim Pathways | Trailblazer Guides
Wandelgids Pilgrim Pathways | Trailblazer Guides
Many people are inspired by the idea of going on a pilgrimage. TV series such as The Road to Rome and The Road to Santiago have shown that even the averagely unfit celeb can hobble through one. However, few of us have time for such long routes.   So what to do?Pilgrim Pathways has the answer: 20 answers in fact. The pilgrimages in this guidebook are achievable for people with limited time and busy lives. The book was inspired by the belief that pilgrimage - variously defined as a journey on foot to a place that is holy, important or special - should be open to all.   There are many ancient pilgrim paths in Britain, some long-forgotten but recently rediscovered, others well-established - but all of them are dauntingly long. Pilgrim Pathways offers routes inspired by the very best of them, distilled into walks that can be accomplished comfortably in two days. There are many one-day options.   In pilgrimage, the journey itself is as important as the destination. Hence, these routes take …

Reisverhaal Walking the Wharfe | Johno Ellison
Reisverhaal Walking the Wharfe | Johno Ellison
In a world of globetrotting explorers and record-breaking journeys - of which he has been part himself - Johno Ellison decided to return to his roots and walk the entire length of the River Wharfe, the Yorkshire waterway beside which he grew up. In his new book for Bradt, Walking the Wharfe, Ellison retraces the steps of Victorian author Edmund Bogg to investigate how the riverscape and its communities have evolved during the intervening 120 years. While wild camping, meeting modern-day Vikings, wartime ghosts and the fearless 'Dales Dippers', and learning how not to deal with a herd of over-inquisitive cows, Ellison encounters a microcosm of English history and culture. Starting in the Vale of York, Ellison walks upstream to explore the region's Viking and Roman heritage, as well as more modern developments such as Tadcaster's disastrous bridge collapse in 2015. He examines a profusion of Victorian spa towns, considers the impact of the Industrial Revolution and enjoys rare wildlife …

Reisverhaal The Realm of the Punisher | Tom Sykes
Reisverhaal The Realm of the Punisher | Tom Sykes
In June 2016, Rodrigo Duterte won the Philippine presidential election by a landslide. Infamous for his bombastic temper and un-PC wisecracks, he is waging a brutal drug war that has killed more than 12,000 people so far.   Over the last nine years, British writer Tom Sykes has travelled extensively in the Philippines in order to understand the Duterte phenomenon, interviewing friends and enemies of ‘The Punisher’ – as he is known – in politics, the media, the arts and civil society. Sykes witnesses anti-government demonstrations in the capital Manila and visits the provincial city of Davao, where Duterte began his crusade against crime using police and vigilante death squads. By delving into Duterte’s troubled childhood of violent rebellion, Sykes discovers what motivates the man today in his pursuit of a merciless ‘war on the poor’ – as Amnesty has described it – that has no end in sight.   The Realm of the Punisher also examines oppressed and marginalized groups in the modern Phili…

Productomschrijving

Shikoku eiland, de pelgrimsroute van 1400 kilometer en 88 tempels.

Compelled to seek something more than what modern society has to offer, Robert Sibley turned to an ancient setting for help in recovering what has been lost. The Henro Michi is one of the oldest and most famous pilgrimage routes in Japan. It consists of a circuit of eighty-eight temples around the perimeter of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands. Every henro, or pilgrim, is said to follow in the footsteps of Kōbō Daishi, the ninth-century ascetic who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism.

Over the course of two months, the author walked this 1,400-kilometer route (roughly 870 miles), visiting the sacred sites and performing their prescribed rituals.Although himself a gaijin, or foreigner, Sibley saw no other pilgrim on the trail who was not Japanese. Some of the people he met became not only close companions but also ardent teachers of the language and culture. These fellow pilgrims’ own stories add to the author’s narrative in unexpected and powerful ways.

Sibley’s descriptions of the natural surroundings, the customs and etiquette, the temples and guesthouses will inspire any reader who has longed to escape the confines of everyday life and to embrace the emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of a pilgrimage.
