Reisverhaal Georgia in the Mountains of Poetry | Peter Nasmyth
Reisverhaal Georgia in the Mountains of Poetry | Peter Nasmyth
The comprehensive guide to modern Georgia - a cultural-historical journey to one of the world's most beautiful countries. Peter Nasmyth has lived in and travelled extensively throughout Georgia for twenty years. Georgia in the Mountains of Poetry is his fascinating account of this intriguing country, based on his travels and hundreds of wide-ranging interviews. Reprinted numerous times, it remains the only comprehensive book on Georgia's history and culture written for the general reader, now substantially revised and expanded for this new edition. Georgia - no larger than Switzerland - ranks in the world's top twelve countries for geographical diversity. It borders on the Black Sea and contains the heart of the Caucasus mountains, subtropical wetlands and semi-arid regions. Stone towers attest to its 3,000-year-old history, which has witnessed the thousand-year reign of the Bagratuni monarchy, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, a bitter civil war and the celebration of its indepe…

Reisverhaal Yemen - Travels in Dictionary Land | Mackintosh-Smith
Reisverhaal Yemen - Travels in Dictionary Land | Mackintosh-Smith
Our ideas of the Arabian Peninusula have been hijacked: by images of the desert, by oil, by the Gulf War. But there is another Arabia. For the Classical geographers Yemen was a fabulous land where flying serpents guarded sacred incense groves. Medieval Arab visitors told of disappearing islands and menstruating mountains. Vita Sackville-West found Aden 'precisely the most repulsive corner of the world'. Arguably the most fascinating but least known country in the Arab world, Yemen has a way of attracting comment that ranges from the superficial to the wildly fictitious. In Yemen: Travels in Dictionary Land, Tim Mackintosh-Smith writes with an intimacy and depth of knowledge gained through over twenty years among the Yemenis. He is a travelling companion of the best sort - erudite, witty and eccentric. Crossing mountain, desert, ocean and three millennia of history, he portrays hyrax hunters and dhow skippers, a noseless regicide, and a sword-wielding tyrant with a passion for Heinz Ru…

Reisverhaal Chasing The Phantom | Eduard Fischer
Reisverhaal Chasing The Phantom | Eduard Fischer
Eduard Fischer takes us on an exploration of myth, art, science, and the sacred space of high mountains. This is an account of adventure and deep reflection accompanied by a selection of the author's stunning colour photographs. After first visiting the Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh in 1985, he returned again and again, seeking to catch a glimpse of the phantom of the Himalayas - the elusive snow leopard.   During these visits he became enthralled with the unique culture of this ancient mountain kingdom, one of the oldest enclaves of Buddhism. The phantom cat itself becomes, at turns, Eduard's quarry, nemesis, obsession, and finally, in a surprising twist of destiny, his teacher.

The life's work of photographer Olivier Follmi and an homage to the incomparable landscape, people, and spirituality of the Himalayan region. The work of Olivier Follmi exudes authenticity and spirituality. For more than 40 years, the prize-winning photographer has documented the landscape and peoples of the Himalayas, a region he first got to know on a hiking trip in the 1980s. Captivated by Tibetan culture, people, and their harmonious coexistence with nature, Follmi returned to the mountain region on numerous occasions - at times as a mountain guide, at others to live and learn from spiritual leaders in a Buddhist temple. The Himalayas became his destiny, and he became one of the most sensitive and insightful observers of life in Tibet. This rich photo book of the Himalayas is at once a remarkable retrospective and an homage to the Tibetan culture and spirituality which has so defined and characterised Follmi's life and work. Reisverhaal To a Mountain in Tibet - Kailash | Colin Thubron
Reisverhaal To a Mountain in Tibet - Kailash | Colin Thubron
I would rather read Colin Thubron than any other travel writer alive' John Simpson Mount Kailas is the most sacred of the world's mountains - holy to one fifth of humanity. Isolated beyond the central Himalayas, its summit has never been scaled, but for centuries the mountain has been ritually circled by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Colin Thubron joins these pilgrims, after an arduous trek from Nepal, through the high passes of Tibet, to the magical lakes beneath the slopes of Kailas itself.   He talks to secluded villagers and to monks in their decaying monasteries; he tells the stories of exiles and of eccentric explorers from the West. Yet he is also walking on a pilgrimage of his own. Having recently witnessed the death of the last of his family, his trek around the great mountain awakes an inner landscape of love and grief, restoring precious fragments of his own past.

Productomschrijving

Mountaintops have long been seen as sacred places, home to gods and dreams. In one climbing year Peter Boardman visited three very different sacred mountains. He began in the New Year, on the South Face of the Carstensz Pyramid in New Guinea.   This shark's fin of steep limestone walls and sweeping glaciers is the highest point between the Andes and the Himalaya, and one of the most inaccessible, rising above thick jungle inhabited by warring Stone Age tribes. During the spring Boardman was on more familiar, if hardly more reassuring, ground, making a four-man, oxygen-free attempt on the world's third highest peak, Kangchenjunga. Hurricane-force winds beat back their first two bids on the unclimbed North Ridge, but they eventually stood within feet of the summit - leaving the final few yards untrodden in deference to the inhabiting deity.   In October, he was back in the Himalaya and climbing the mountain most sacred to the Sherpas: the twin-summited Gauri Sankar. Renowned for its technical difficulty and spectacular profile, it is aptly dubbed the Eiger of the Himalaya and Boardman's first ascent of the South Summit took a committing and gruelling twenty-three days. Three sacred mountains, three very different expeditions, all superbly captured by Boardman in Sacred Summits, his second book, first published shortly after his death in 1982.   Combining the excitement of extreme climbing with acute observation of life in the mountains, this is an amusing, dramatic, poignant and thought-provoking book, amply fulfilling the promise of Boardman's first title, The Shining Mountain, for which he won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1979.
