Fietsgids Bikeline Iron Curtain Trail From Hof to Szeged | Esterbauer
Fietsgids Bikeline Iron Curtain Trail From Hof to Szeged | Esterbauer
Praktische fietsgids met detailkaarten, ingetekende route, informatie over overnachten en fietsenmakers, zwaarte en hoogteprofiel. In spiraalbinding, Engelstalig 1760km van Hof naar Szeged The Iron Curtain divided the continent into East and West and extended from the Barents Sea through Europe to the Black Sea - a distance of 10,000 kilometres. Until the peaceful revolutions in Eastern Europe, it was the physical and ideological border between two mutually hostile blocs. It did not just divide many neighbouring states, but also divided Germany into East and West. Few things remain of the former death strip today. The few relics that are still there remind us of our past but no longer separate us.   Therefore, it is imperative to make the memories visible! We know that there is little in the way of shared memories between the West and the East, that the experiences of Europeans east and west of the border differ, not least because their perspectives were often shaped completely differ…

Reisgids Silk Road (China) - Monks, Warriors & Merchants | Odyssey
Reisgids Silk Road (China) - Monks, Warriors & Merchants | Odyssey
To the modern reader, the Silk Road conjures up images of fabled cities and exotic lands, of long-gone empires and great conquerors. Place names such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Khotan or Chang'an continue to fascinate with the richness of their past. In this authoritative book, Luce Boulnois explores the encounter between East and West across the vast continental expanse that separates the Mediterranean world from the Chinese one. She unravels in a clear and compelling way the complex threads that make up the history of these great overland trade routes, which allowed the transmission across the world of ideas and beliefs, techniques and works of art, helping to shape the civilizations that flourished along the way. How did the Romans, following in the footsteps of the Greeks, discover these far-flung regions? What did the Chinese know of the European world? How did they manage to keep the secret of silk manufacture safe for centuries? Did Marco Polo really go to China, or was he just a c…

Vogelgids Centraal Azie - Birds of Central Asia | Bloomsbury
Birds of Central Asia is the first field guide to include the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, along with neighbouring Afghanistan. This vast area includes a diverse variety of habitats, and the avifauna is similarly broad, from sandgrouse, ground jays and larks on the vast steppe and semi-desert to a broad range of raptors, and from woodland species such as warblers and nuthatches to a suite of montane species, such as snowcocks, accentors and snowfinches. Birds of Central Asia includes 141 high-quality plates covering every species (and all distinctive races) that occur in the region, along with concise text focusing on identification and accurate colour maps. Important introductory sections introduce the land and its birds. Birds of Central Asia is a must-read for any birder or traveller visting this remote region.   "For a long time, there's been something of a gap in field-guide coverage across the Palearctic. Europe is w…

Wandelgids Karawanken - Slovenie - Walking in the Karavanke | Cicerone
Wandelgids Karawanken - Slovenie - Walking in the Karavanke | Cicerone
Goede wandelgids met veel dagtochten; redelijk kaartmateriaal en goede praktische informatie. This guidebook offers 23 walking routes set across the magnificent 120km-long Karavanke mountain range, which forms a natural border between Austria and Slovenia. Commonly known as 'the way the Alps used to be', as it is yet to experience the extent of commercial development known by the Western Alps, it is one of the longest ranges in Western Europe but it remains genuinely unspoilt and relatively unvisited by English-speaking hillwalkers. The guide's walks begin in pretty towns and villages, and most of them access the peaks from the relatively more gentle Slovenian side of the range, where forest-clad slopes lead to grassy summits where spectacular views can be enjoyed. Arranged by peak from west to east along the range, most of the summits can be reached by waymarked paths and trails. The guide gives all the practical details you need on transport, accessing the routes, accommodation and …

Wegenatlas Travel Atlas Silk Road - Zijderoute | ITMB
The Great Silk Road has been the traditional trading route between Europe and China for two thousand years. Starting in Xi’an in the east and ending at Antioch in the west. Much of the Silk Road still exists and can be visited.   This 73-page atlas follows the route from west to east, starting in ancient Tyre (now Sour, in southern Lebanon) and in Samandag in Turkey, heading eastward through Syria and Iraq (with a two-page inset map of Damascus and a six-page spread for fabled Baghdad) before heading north of the Kavir Desert to Tehran (another four-page spread) and eastward into Afghanistan to follow either the northern or southern routes through modern-day Samarkand and Tashkent (more insets) before moving on to the Urumqi r…

Fietsgids Bikeline Iron Curtain Trail 3 - German-German Border Trail | Esterbauer
Fietsgids Bikeline Iron Curtain Trail 3 - German-German Border Trail | Esterbauer
Praktische fietsgids met detailkaarten, ingetekende route, informatie over overnachten en fietsenmakers, zwaarte en hoogteprofiel. In spiraalbinding, Engelstalig   The Iron Curtain ran for about 7,000 km from the Barents Sea in the north straight through Europe to the Black Sea and divided the continent in East and West. Until the Velvet Revolution in Eastern Europe it was a physical and ideological border between two blocks which conceived each other as enemies. Not only were many neighbouring states divided, but Germany itself was divided into east and west. Today there are hardly any reminders that the wall ever existed.   The border in Germany was 1,400 km long. The former death strip was composed of 3.000 km of fences, car-trenches for 730 km, 830 observation towers, the brightly lit roads, walls and bunkers – most of it is gone. Remaining are the vehicle roads with their perforated paving stones and several observation towers. And in a few years the sparse vegetation will be sup…

Reisgids Mauritania | Bradt Travel Guides
Reisgids Mauritania | Bradt Travel Guides
Brand new from Bradt, and written by Africa expert Sean Connolly, is the first English-language guide dedicated to Mauritania, one of an ever more exclusive list of countries where the Sahara Desert can be securely and freely explored. Straddling the west coast of Africa for 700km between Western Sahara and Senegal, Mauritania occupies the threshold between North and sub-Saharan Africa, but remains a world apart from either – neither Moroccan nor Senegalese, but with strong influences from both.  The country is now on a well-travelled route for overlanders heading south from Europe to start African trips. But most burn through to the southern border, rather than sticking around. Those who do stay may marvel at stone-built oasis towns tucked into dune fields the size of small countries, admire wild geological oddities like the Richat Structure (reputedly home to the lost city of Atlantis), explore a nearly uninhabited, wind-battered coast where you can sail between end-of-the-earth fis…

Productomschrijving

The phenomenon mobile banditry has existed in Europe for centuries, however in recent years great concern has risen about the increase in the number of gangs from East and Central Europe who have been committing various types of crimes against property in West European countries. This research provides explanations and analyses of the historical, political, economic, and cultural backgrounds of the phenomenon `itinerant criminal gangs from different perspectives: the lessons learned from comparable situations in the past; the inevitable negative effects of globalization; the power of attraction of the West and the gulf between the rich and poor and between West and East Europe. The analysis of the connections between organized crime, shady entrepreneurs and corrupt politicians in East and Central Europe on the one hand, and the relationship between migrants and criminal groups in the Netherlands on the other provide explanation on the dynamics of the markets in stolen goods. This research, based on 127 interviews and observations in the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Romania, analysis of court files and literature studies provides answers to the questions what is the socio-cultural background of these criminals, how do they operate, where are the stolen goods and what are the Dutch, East and Central European and EU efforts to combat this form of organized crime.
