Cale's signature sound with the Velvets was purposefully rough and aurally challenging, but Vintage Violence is a startlingly user-friendly piece of mature, intelligent pop with a smooth, satin finish. The Welsh rocker shows a pop craftsman at work on ten tracks that reference everything from Country Rock to Beach Boys harmonies to The Band-style Americana and beyond.

    John Fred, geboren in Louisiana, werd geboren in Baton Rouge en was gedurende de jaren zestig een resident garagebandleider in New Orleans. Hij en zijn Playboy Band zijn het meest bekend om zijn nummer 1 bubblegum poprock single uit 1968, "Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)." De band nam eind jaren '60 vier albums op voor Paula Records. Geen van de albums is ooit opnieuw uitgebracht. Het album dat vernoemd is naar de hitsingle is een underground psychedelisch bubblegum-popalbum dat zeer gewild is bij platenverzamelaars over de hele wereld. Geen van hun albums is ooit opnieuw uitgebracht op vinyl.
