Won from the Waves (Hardback)
Won from the Waves (Hardback)
In 1959 a huge gas bubble was discovered in the Dutch province of Groningen. Soon experts started to suspect that gas could also be extracted from the North Sea. When this proved to be true, it did not take long for both existing and new companies to plunge into offshore oil and gas extraction. As a result the Netherlands has acquired one of the most important offshore industries in the world since the oil crisis. It owes this position to a group of suppliers: innovative companies that build, transport, maintain and disassemble platforms, transformer stations and wind farms on behalf of the large energy companies. They are world leaders and are playing an important role in the current energy transition, which, to a large extent, is taking place at sea. In Won from the Waves Joke Korteweg and Frits Loomeijer describe the fascinating development of the Dutch offshore industry on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the trade organisation IRO. This unique book is the first to shine

Tales of Violence (Paperback)
Tales of Violence (Paperback)
Although it has long been known that the Indonesian War of Independence was far more violent than generally assumed by the Dutch public, for a long time the tendency to downplay, ignore, or justify the scale and nature of this violence dominated. 'Tales of Violence' examines how politicians and administrators in both the Netherlands and Indonesia have dealt with this large-scale violence and poses painful questions. How were the violence of war and the numerous excesses between 1945-1949 discussed, concealed, passed on, manipulated, and used politically? What did Dutch, colonial, and Indonesian politicians and administrators know about the nature of the actions of their own and enemy troops? Why did investigations into specific scandals grind to a halt or were their outcomes hidden from the public? What did those in charge do with their knowledge and how did communications influence public support for warfare? The authors argue that the way the war in Indonesia has long been viewed has

Atlas: Makerspaces in Public Libraries in The Netherlands (Paperback)
Atlas: Makerspaces in Public Libraries in The Netherlands (Paperback)
Public libraries want to contribute to an inclusive and innovative society and aim to enable their patrons to acquire the necessary 21st century skills. Dutch public libraries are therefore gradually adding more and more activities to their curriculum, teaching these different types of skills, such as 'invention literacy'. They also often provide a 'performative space' (i.e. a makerspace) for their patrons. This means library spaces are no longer dominated by books, but rather reflect the current development in libraries' core business, moving from collections to connections in order to serve their local communities. The KB, the National Library of The Netherlands, participated in the KIEM project Performative Spaces in Dutch Public Libraries. Stepping Stones of Inclusive Innovation, researching the development of performative spaces in libraries. This project, a collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the Delft University of Technology, fits the KBs

Productomschrijving

The Dutch tax haven is much older than most would assume and has undergone several stages of development. It arose during World War I, when foreign capital refugees and German companies started to take advantage of existing facilities such as banking secrecy and numbered bank accounts. During the interwar period, the Dutch and Swiss tax havens became the most important in Europe. Due to international tensions and the threat of war a lot of flight capital left the Netherlands, mainly to the United States. That meant the downfall of the Dutch tax haven. Just after World War II, the Dutch government abolished banking secrecy. Therefore, the pre-war tax haven could not be re-established, since it was largely based on secrecy. But through a growing tax treaty network, a generous participation exemption, and attractive tax rulings, the Netherlands was able to develop into one of the most important tax havens for companies. This is the first archive-based study that covers the complete
