At once comic, tragic and erotic, Venus & Adonis (1593) is a poem by William Shakespeare based on passages from Ovid's Metamorphoses. This new Dutch translation by Hafid Bouazza of Shakespeare's text is illustrated by Marlene Dumas, with her complete suite of thirty-three works on paper reproduced throughout. The poem tells the story of Venus, the goddess of love, and her attempts to seduce the hunter Adonis. It is a complex, kaleidoscopic work in which love takes center stage - Venus's lustful yearning for Adonis ripples throughout, each stanza and line tinged with unrequited longing. Through a series of expressive ink washes, Dumas paints new passion into the poem - bodies bleed into one another, lips part in sighs of passion. As Venus declares, “Graze on my lips, and if those hills be dry, / Stray lower, where the pleasant fountains lie.” Like Shakespeare before her, Dumas opens up a seemingly unending flow between light and dark, love and death, pleasure and pain.

William Shakespeare schreef tijdens zijn leven (1564-1616) niet alleen verhalen, sonnetten en gedichten, zeker 37 toneelstukken worden aan 'the Bard of Avon' toegeschreven. Ap Zijlstra (Wassenaar, 1936) verdiepte zich na zijn emeritaat aan de University of Florida in het werk van Shakespeare en vertaalde alle toneelstukken integraal opnieuw naar het Nederlands met de opvatting zo dicht mogelijk bij de oorspronkelijke tekst te blijven. In deze verzamelbundel staan Het temmen van de Feeks (1591), Romeo en Juliet (1595), Een Midzomernachtsdroom (1596), Hamlet (1602), King Lear (1606) en Macbeth (1606): vier tragedies en twee komedies die behoren tot de meest bekende werken van Shakespeare.

Romeo en Julia is een vroege tragedie van William Shakespeare over de onmogelijke liefde van Juliet Capulet en Romeo Montague, twee jongelingen uit elkaar vijandig gezinde families. Het verhaal is ontstaan door verschillende hervertellingen van een verhaal uit 1476 van Masuccio Salernitano, Mariotto en Gianozza. De volledige titel van het toneelstuk is The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Vanaf de eerste opvoering omstreeks 1596 en de vroegste edities (1597, 1599) is Romeo and Juliet on-verminderd populair gebleven bij het publiek doordat het gaat over een onderwerp van blijvend belang: romantische liefde. Het stuk werd door Shakespeare waarschijnlijk ge-schreven in de periode 1594-96 en eerst gepubliceerd in een niet-geautoriseerde quarto-editie in 1597. Een geautoriseerde quarto verscheen in 1599 en die was aanzienlijk langer en betrouwbaarder dan de eerste. The route runs through beautiful regions of Denmark, and in most places it is possible to cycle or walk along the route. Most of the route is situated on small roads, and therefore it is not the quickest or shortest way from point A to B, but instead it is an invitation to visit the many attractions, that you will find in Denmark. It runs through the danish mainland and is therefore not covering islands like Bornholm and Samsø.
