Reisverhaal Wild Abandon - Dodecanesos | Jennifer Barclay
Reisverhaal Wild Abandon - Dodecanesos | Jennifer Barclay
'There's something about abandoned places which moves me and captures the imagination.' So says seasoned travel writer Jennifer Barclay as she walks with her dog and her backpack through the deserted spaces of the Dodecanese, islands that were once bustling but are now half forgotten and reclaimed by the wild due to a mix of misfortune and the lure of opportunity elsewhere. Join her on a journey through abandoned villages and farms, cave-houses and captains' mansions, the homes of displaced Muslim fishermen and poets, as she discovers beauty in the ruins, emptiness and silence, and inspiration in the stories of people's lives.A long-term resident of Greece, Jennifer Barclay spent more than four years researching Wild Abandon, visiting islands multiple times and hearing the stories of local people. She travels from the very west to the very east of the Dodecanese, from the very south almost to the very north, taking in some of the smallest and the biggest islands, and highlighting diffe…

Reisgids The South West Coast Path | Bloomsbury
Reisgids The South West Coast Path | Bloomsbury
Often featuring in lists of the world's best walks, the South West Coast Path is 630 miles long, and passes through two World Heritage Sites. This guide to the path is a modern take on the traditional (turn right at the stile, and follow the footpath to the bridge) guidebook: instead of telling readers where to go step by step, Stephen gives fantastic ideas for what to do as they travel along the path. There are so many amazing adventures and places to visit (some 'secret' and some well known) and this guide highlights 1,000 of them, all situated along the route.   After an Introduction giving a history of the path and the stories of the people who made it (Why is this path the most popular National Trail? Why is it so closely associated with tales of King Arthur? When is the best time to visit?) the bulk of the book focuses on all the amazing things you can do along the path itself. It is divided into regions, with over 70 adventures/highlights per region: West Somerset, North Devon, …

Wandelgids - Reisgids The Mountain Hut Book | Cicerone
This book is a celebration of mountain huts, showcasing the the sheer variety and sometimes quirky nature of these buildings that allow walkers, trekkers and climbers to access remote corners of the mountains. Packed with entertaining stories that bring the places and people to life, it contains descriptions of the author's favourite huts in the Alps, along with suggestions for hut-to-hut tours of 3-13 days duration, including the Tour of Mont Blanc. It also traces the history of huts and how they have evolved from the most primitive of shelters to the often purpose-built, eco-friendly buildings of today. For the uninitiated, it unravels some of the mystery of huts and explains how to use them and what facilities to expect. Above all, it illustrates the way in which mountain huts can be truly sociable places, where like-minded people can spend a night or two in the most magical of locations and share a love of wild places. Productomschrijving

Grasses, trees and the lovable grouch of the Lowlands For many years, no one knew the Dutch writer A.L. Snijders (b. 1937). But in 2001 he started writing zkv's, very short stories. He sent them to his children and some friends, not thinking about publication. Now, fifteen years later, we have about 2,500 zkv's ('zeer korte verhalen'), collected in ten books. Some of them were translated into German and published (by Reclam Verlag) but English translations were not available. Until-in 2011-the American writer Lydia Davis read some of his stories. Davis, winner of the Man Booker International Prize, is noted for literary works of extreme brevity and is also a short story writer and translator from French and other languages. Among her translations are new versions of the French classics, including Swann's Way by Proust and Madame Bovary by Flaubert. Lydia Davis decided to translate some of Snijders' stories: I liked the concrete narration and the short sentences, the freshness of each piece, the good humor and the references to Dutch culture and history. I especially liked Snijders' wit, thoughtfulness and often surprising conclusions. Grasses and Trees brings us 72 very short autobiographical fables about the magical unmagical world of A.L. Snijders, a very Dutch world, imbued with humor and filled with animals, ordinary and extraordinary people, old houses, the city of Amsterdam and the countryside. Readers of English can now enjoy Snijders' distinct style and his artful blend of observation and imagination. It is to Lydia Davis' credit that with her Snijders translations, people outside the Lowlands can begin to know this lovable grouch and the nation of lovable grouches of which and for which he writes.
