International framework agreements and fundamental social rights (Paperback)
International framework agreements and fundamental social rights (Paperback)
In an era of economic globalisation, the declining regulatory role of governments competing for investment and the rising power of multinational enterprises are leading to a race to the bottom in the area of fundamental social rights. This issue needs to be redressed. It is essential to promote fundamental social rights, at both national and international level, in order to give economic globalisation a more human face. At present, the advancement of social rights is mainly in the hands of the International Labour Organisation, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations, which provide minimum labour standards that focus on governments and enterprises. Due to a lack of political will to develop legally binding agreements that directly address multinational enterprises, the implementation and recognition of fundamental social principles and standards throughout global supply chains are based mainly on soft law. In practice, social rights are largely

Costly Giving, Giving Guaizas (Paperback)
Costly Giving, Giving Guaizas (Paperback)
An Archaeology of Exchange is primarily an archaeology of human sociality and anti-sociality. Nevertheless, archaeological studies of exchange are numerous and varied, and archaeologists do not always approach exchange as a social mechanism, concentrating rather on the cultural, economic or political implications of exchange. Even so, at times it is worth retracing the implicit theoretical steps that archaeologists have taken and look at human sociality through the eyes of exchange as something new. This will be undertaken here by concentrating on the exchange of social valuables in the later part of the Late Ceramic Age of the Greater and Lesser Antilles (AD 1000/1100-1492). Questions concerning this exchange will be framed in a novel mix of theories - such as Costly Signalling Theory coupled with the paradox of keeping-while-giving and the notion of gene/culture co-evolution joined with Complex Adaptive System theory. Still, all these theories can be related back to the concept of

The Return of Ethics and Spirituality in Global Development (Paperback)
The Return of Ethics and Spirituality in Global Development (Paperback)
The theory of modernization basically reduces the meaning of development to economic growth often measured by Growth Domestic Product of the country or overall purchase power parity of the nation. This approach ignores the variety of perspectives on development, hence excludes the role of culture, identity, and spirituality as social determinants of good development. More importantly, modernization theory which informs the mainstream view on development ignores the structural causes of underdevelopment, including colonial heritage or the current unbridled capitalism in many societies. Against reductionist views of development, fundamental questions are raised about the theory and programming of development. From what perspective is the conception of development perceived? Who should decide and depict development goals? What kind of development could result in desirable changes? Is it morally desirable to dictate an exclusively Western understanding of development to others? Is there

Hermeneutics and the Humanities / Hermeneutik und Geisteswissenschaften (Paperback)
Hermeneutics and the Humanities / Hermeneutik und Geisteswissenschaften (Paperback)
Hans-Georg Gadamer's Wahrheit und Methode (1960) is one of the most influential books on interpretation to have appeared in the past half century. Scholars across the humanities have applied, discussed, and criticized its hermeneutical insights. This volume aims to continue this conversation between hermeneutics and the humanities, but also tries to map Gadamer's influence on the humanities so far. In which domains of study has Wahrheit und Methode made its greatest impact? Where and for which reasons have other disciplines hardly engaged with Gadamer's work? In a more pragmatic sense, the volume also suggests possibilities for further interaction between Gadamer and the humanities. Written by an international team of authors, this bilingual collection of essays (English and German) is essential reading for scholars throughout the humanities interested in issues of methodology, theory, and philosophy. -Madeleine Kasten, Herman Paul, and Rico Sneller are lecturers at Leiden University.

Caribbean Cultural Heritage and the Nation (Paperback)
Caribbean Cultural Heritage and the Nation (Paperback)
Centuries of intense migrations have deeply impacted expressions of cultural heritage on the ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. This volume queries how cultural heritage on these Dutch Caribbean islands relates to the work of nation-building and nation-branding. How does the imagining of a shared political “we” relate to images deliberately produced to market these islands to a world of capital? The contributing authors in this volume address this leading question in their essays that describe and analyze the expressions of the ABC islands. In doing so, they compare and contrast nation-building and branding on the ABC islands to similar practices taking place in the wider Caribbean. The expressions of cultural heritage discussed range from the importance of sports, music, literature, and visual arts to those related to the political economy of tourism, the work of museums, the question of reparations, and the politics and policies affecting the Caribbean Diasporas in the North
