Reisgids Carl goes Amsterdam | Drake Shake
Reisgids Carl goes Amsterdam | Drake Shake
Every designer's paradise, whether it's fashion, furniture or big budget adverts, the canal-adorned Dutch capital of Amsterdam is a prime place to see and be seen in business and creative industries today. Now a serious and established centre for start-ups, with incubators and investors galore, Amsterdammers in business congregate around the co-working spaces found across the city or in the glinting corporate locale of Zuidas. While business life in the city involves big bucks and resolute attitudes, Amsterdammers love nothing more than to party in their spare time. Think picnics in Vondelpark as soon as the sun cracks a ray, rosé and beers while chugging along the canals (every Amsterdam citizen seems to have their own boat complete with outboard engine) and day trips to the trendy beach clubs just outside the city during summertime weekends. Blend that with bright coloured clothing, the inevitable bicycle and food fresh from the surrounding farms, and anyone can be an Amsterdammer f…

OASE 111 (Paperback)
OASE 111 (Paperback)
Museums not only facilitate encounters among visitors, objects and stories, but they also facilitate the staging of these visits. They organize tours of the exhibition spaces as well as provide additional publicly accessible spaces, including entrances, corridors, auditoriums and museum cafés. In nineteenth-century monumental art museums, the transition from city to museum interior was dramatized. Climbing the stairs of Schinkel's Altes Museum in Berlin or traversing the pergola between the ponds in Berlage's Kunstmuseum in The Hague urges visitors to leave the everyday world behind. The post-war, 'barrier-free' museum, with squares and streets inside and out, seems to want to abolish this city-museum boundary. At the same time, other internal boundaries are being revised, namely those between front stage and backstage. Depots are being made accessible and visitors can now take a look inside restoration studios. This edition of OASE examines how historical and contemporary buildings

Ruimtelijke transformaties van de steden in het Randstadgebied (12de-20ste eeuw) (Paperback)
Ruimtelijke transformaties van de steden in het Randstadgebied (12de-20ste eeuw) (Paperback)
In this issue of A+BE (written in Dutch), the transformation of the form of nine cities in the Randstad between 1250 and 1940 in relation to changes in infrastructure is central, namely Utrecht, Dordrecht, Leiden, Haarlem, Delft, Gouda, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Within this time span, three periods of great spatial dynamics are identified, namely the period 1240-1450, 1580-1680 and 1870-1940. Comparing the city maps with each other, they made a development from uniformity to diversification to levelling between 1250 and 1940. Typical for the spatial development was that in the first period urban centres were created in which the various urban functions were concentrated. In the second period, specialization took place, in addition to strengthening the regional market function in the late medieval centres, functions were moved to the city edges. In the third period, the international goods transports continued to be moved out of the late medieval centres. In addition, the

Designing for sustainability through upcycling / Ontwerpen voor duurzaamheid door herontwikkeling (H
While increasingly more people live in cities, urban peripheries are expending at the cost of nature. This book explains how sustainability can be achieved by urban redevelopment and upcycling. The large-scale processes of urban redevelopment in this book are based on a successful brownfield project in Netherlands, the Paleiskwartier in 's-Hertogenbosch. Designing for Sustainability through upcycling tells the inside story of nearly three decades how policies were made, decisions taken, designs created, how the projects developed in phases and how the city government partnered the private sector in a unique way. A series of essays and short interviews with key players involved -including directors, designers, developers and city-officials - provides a detailed overview of how this project was actually realized. This book offers first-hand information of 30 years of development as told by master-planner Shyam Khandekar. Professor Vinayak Bharne places the process of upcycling in the

Turning Data into Strategic Assets (Paperback)
Turning Data into Strategic Assets (Paperback)
Successful digital transformation allows companies to achieve remarkable benefits, such as increased capabilities, improved processes, and better customer experiences and engagement. Although there is a growing acknowledgement of the need for digital transformation, many companies are slow at adopting it, due to its complexity and immense changes to the business. Besides the adoption of innovative technologies, improving the use of data is a key strategy for digital transformation. These days, each company, large or small, possesses rich amounts of data. Although data on its own has value, they have not been well exploited to create a higher value for the business. This situation generates the main research question: How can small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) act more competitively by exploiting data to create more value? Dr. ShengYun (Annie) Yang is Professor of Applied Science in Digital Business of Research Centre Business Innovation at the Rotterdam University of Applied

Included. Architectuur als middel voor een nieuwe toekomst / Architecture as a Means for a New Futur
For Dutch please see below - Englisch - The fiercely social and vigorously innovative Mei realizes trend-setting buildings in the Netherlands and abroad. This Rotterdam-based architecture firm has built up an idiosyncratic oeuvre in which respect for the environment is central. This first overview shows works of the past 25 years. From the 1995 modular Smarthouse to the wooden residential building Sawa that is currently being developed: they all display a fascination with intelligent building systems. Ambitious transformation plans, including those of projects such as the Schiecentrale, Phoenix I and the silk factory in Naro-Fominsk, show how the firm has developed into a redevelopment pioneer. Using a wide range of ingredients - from façade elements and cultural clusters to marketing strategies - Included provides an insight into Mei's working method. Discussions with various experts address underlying themes and their current relevance. While the ecological and social need for a

Futuring Spaces of Possibility explores how contemporary art and architecture address urban, social and ecological challenges and create new possibilities for the future city. It invites urban theorists, curators, artists and architects to use Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as a testbed for new spatial imaginaries. How to deal with transformation and degrowth in a city whose boundaries have been shaped by its medieval history? How to question dominant histories, use underutilised public space and set in motion new cohabitations in the city? This book is published on the occasion of Bruges Triennial 2024: Spaces of Possibility, curated by Shendy Gardin and Sevie Tsampalla. Featuring contributions by the twelve artists and architects in the exhibition, it offers insights into the research processes behind the commissions, through texts, archival images, preparatory sketches and interviews. Newly commissioned essays address issues of urban transformation and the role that
