Flipping the Bird (Paperback)
Flipping the Bird (Paperback)
'Flipping the Bird' is the narrative visual report, a photo novel actually, of a long and intensive walk in the dunes, in which the main character tries to reconnect with nature. During this walk he slowly falls in love with the landscape, the flora and the fauna and he thinks that this love is mutual. A special, surreal, humorous and confrontational dialogue is created between people, flora and fauna. At the climax the main character finds out if the love is reciprocal and chooses his path… The story is set in the dunes in connection with the continuous threat of the sea to The Netherlands. Human actions and the choices we make now and in the future are of great importance in this regard.

Akragas (Paperback)
Akragas (Paperback)
Over the past few years, the archaeological and architectural investigation of ancient Akragas (modern Agrigento) in Sicily has gathered new momentum. This book brings together various researchers who investigate the Greek period remains of Akragas, an ostentatiously wealthy city state that was politically powerful and culturally formative. The issues discussed range from methodological approaches and the interpretation of fresh field-data, to concerns of site maintenance and the reconstruction of monuments. The outcome is presented in thirteen contributions, arranged into sections on extramural survey, urban sanctuaries, housing, and on the suburban sanctuary at S. Anna. The contributors to this volume offer perspectives for further research on the monuments, finds, and contexts from ancient Akragas. These extend beyond strictly archaeological concerns, and as manifested by Agrigento's status as a UNESCO world heritage site, are also of relevance to wider audiences. Natascha Sojc is

Costly Giving, Giving Guaizas (Paperback)
Costly Giving, Giving Guaizas (Paperback)
An Archaeology of Exchange is primarily an archaeology of human sociality and anti-sociality. Nevertheless, archaeological studies of exchange are numerous and varied, and archaeologists do not always approach exchange as a social mechanism, concentrating rather on the cultural, economic or political implications of exchange. Even so, at times it is worth retracing the implicit theoretical steps that archaeologists have taken and look at human sociality through the eyes of exchange as something new. This will be undertaken here by concentrating on the exchange of social valuables in the later part of the Late Ceramic Age of the Greater and Lesser Antilles (AD 1000/1100-1492). Questions concerning this exchange will be framed in a novel mix of theories - such as Costly Signalling Theory coupled with the paradox of keeping-while-giving and the notion of gene/culture co-evolution joined with Complex Adaptive System theory. Still, all these theories can be related back to the concept of

Herman de Vries - publisher (Paperback)
Herman de Vries - publisher (Paperback)
Once described as 'small explosions of intelligence and sensation, the seeds of wonder' by poet Thomas A. Clark, the eschenau summer press publications stretch the definition of 'artist's book' as far as it will go. Since 1974, from his home in Eschenau, Germany, renowned artist herman de vries (1931) sends out leaves of gold, the dust of some roads, the forbidden down of thistles. A longtime key figure in the book-as-art himself, most of these publications are the result of an open invitation from de vries to artist friends like James Lee Byars, Marinus Boezem and Melanie Bonajo, but also to poets and musicians - even to a keeper of bumble bees. This book facilitates our reception of all 77 of these shared objects through full illustrations and written clarification. Two essays connect the series to the international context of the artist's book.

From the alley to the web (Paperback)
From the alley to the web (Paperback)
Developments in technology have not only transformed aspects of our daily life, but they have also impacted the way in how illicit transactions are organised, such as illicit drug supply and demand. This book focuses on illicit drug transactions through drug marketplaces on the dark web, also called cryptomarkets. The dark web is an encrypted, small part of the internet not searchable by regular search engines. These drug cryptomarkets offer an unprecedented opportunity to study a drug market and to monitor new trends in drug supply and demand. International research has provided some general insights into the profile, experiences and motivations of drug cryptomarket vendors and buyers. This research has however indicated that national differences exist regarding the different variables that relate to cryptomarket use and prevalence. Therefore, in 2019, the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) commissioned and financed CRYPTODRUG shedding a first, yet necessary, light on illicit drug

The Belvédère loess and gravel pit, situated northwest of the town of Maastricht, The Netherlands, has been the object of an intensive archaeological-geological investigation between 1980 and 1990. The aim of the research was to study the remains of human activities during the last and penultimate glaciation and the deposits containing archaeological finds. This second report describes the geology of the site, the finds and sites, the palaeoenvironmental and dating evidence and the implications of all these data for the interpretation of hominid behaviour in the Middle Palaeolithic. Other publications on the Belvédère gravel pit are Analecta Praehistorica Leidensia 18 (van Kolfschoten and Roebroeks 1985) and Analecta Praehistorica Leidensia 35/36 (De Loecker 2004).
