The pilgrimage trail takes in 21 historic Spanish missions and can be completed in 50-60 walking days or 2-3 weeks cycling. Ancient footpaths became connecting routes between the Spanish missions, pueblos, and presidios in the period 1769 to 1823. Today, the California Missions Trail follows a pedestrian route through urban cities and historic towns, through forest paths and country lanes, to each of the twenty-one historic Spanish missions. Reisverhaal Black Sea | Neal Ascherson
Reisverhaal Black Sea | Neal Ascherson
An acclaimed, award-winning book on a fascinating subject, recently revised and updated by the author. Black Sea is a homage to an ocean and its shores and a meditation on Eurasian history, from the earliest times to the present. It explores the culture, history and politics of the volatile region which surrounds the Black Sea.       Ascherson recalls the world of Herodotus and Aeschylus; Ovid's place of exile on what is now the coast of Romania; the decline and fall of Byzantium; the mysterious Christian Goths; the Tatar Khanates; the growth of Russian power across the grasslands, and the centuries of war between Ottoman and Russian Empires around the Black Sea. He examines the terrors of Stalinism and its fascist enemy, both striving for mastery of these endlessly colourful and complex shores, and investigates the turbulent history of modern Ukraine.       This is a story of Greeks, Scythians, Samatians, Huns, Goths, Turks, Russians, Ukrainians and Poles. This is the sea where Euro…

Reisgids Mull and Iona - a historical guide | Birlinn
Reisgids Mull and Iona - a historical guide | Birlinn
Mull and Iona are two of the most visited islands in Scotland, and have played a central role in the history of the country. As the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, Iona has been a place of pilgrimage for almost 1,500 years and was a beacon of intellectual light during the Dark Ages, when magnificent works such as the Book of Kells were crafted by the monks of the abbey founded by St Columba. This book provides a full and engaging history of the islands from the time of their earliest human inhabitants to the present day. The gazetteer lists all the places of interest from all periods in the islands' history, from the world-wide renowned churches, crosses and grave slabs on Iona and the magnificent restored Duart Castle on Mull, seat of the clan Maclean, to the planned village of Dervaig, the townships in the Ross of Mull and Ardmeanach which were cleared during the nineteenth century and the mausoleum of Lachlan MacQuarrie, the much esteemed 18th-century Governor of New South Wale…

Wegenkaart - landkaart Balkans Rail and Road | ITMB
The region of Europe known as the Balkans is normally restricted to the area that used to be Yugoslavia, but it is geographically much larger and needs to be seen in its expanded format that includes Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and Greece, with that portion of Turkey that has had so much influence on the region over many centuries. Side 1 is dominated by the great land mass of historic strategic importance that has been fought over for centuries. Nowadays, conflict is still threatening, with Kosovo and Serbia always at each other's throats and Romania warily watching Russia's aggression next door in both Ukraine and Moldova. Attitudes are shifting towards closer integration with the EU in the region, with Albania, Northern Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro clamouring for admission and NATO being looked at to provide security against further Russian aggression. As a result, the region retains huge geopolitical significance, but it also offers touristic opportunities that are difficult t…

Foo Fighters - Concrete And Gold 2- (LP)
Foo Fighters - Concrete And Gold 2- (LP)
I wanted it to be the biggest sounding Foo Fighters record ever. To make a gigantic rock record but with Greg Kurstin's sense of melody and arrangement… Motorhead's version of Sgt. Pepper… or something like that.” So speaks Dave Grohl of the mission statement made manifest in Foo Fighters' ninth epic, the aptly titled Concrete and Gold, due out September 15 worldwide. Just as Foo Fighters' anthem of the summer “Run” “opens as a dreamy, slow burner then… quickly turns heavy as thunder” (BILLBOARD) with its “huge triumphant chorus” (STEREOGUM), Concrete and Gold marries some of the most insanely heavy FF riffs ever with lush harmonic complexities courtesy of a first time team-up with producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia, Pink). This unlikely alliance came about through a bizarre sequence of surprise musical obsessions and chance encounters: Listening to the radio during a drive roughly four years ago, Grohl first heard “Again and Again” by Kurstin's band The Bird & The Bee-“It blew my mind……

Fietsgids Bikeline Iron Curtain Trail From Hof to Szeged | Esterbauer
Fietsgids Bikeline Iron Curtain Trail From Hof to Szeged | Esterbauer
Praktische fietsgids met detailkaarten, ingetekende route, informatie over overnachten en fietsenmakers, zwaarte en hoogteprofiel. In spiraalbinding, Engelstalig 1760km van Hof naar Szeged The Iron Curtain divided the continent into East and West and extended from the Barents Sea through Europe to the Black Sea - a distance of 10,000 kilometres. Until the peaceful revolutions in Eastern Europe, it was the physical and ideological border between two mutually hostile blocs. It did not just divide many neighbouring states, but also divided Germany into East and West. Few things remain of the former death strip today. The few relics that are still there remind us of our past but no longer separate us.   Therefore, it is imperative to make the memories visible! We know that there is little in the way of shared memories between the West and the East, that the experiences of Europeans east and west of the border differ, not least because their perspectives were often shaped completely differ…

Kyv, Sjtsjek and Chryv A History of Kiev In the book a compact history of Kiev is decribed, from the Stoneage till present. Ukraine has a rich and old history and is the cradle of the Indo-European cultures and languages. In the steppes of nowadays Russia and Ukraine the horse was tamed and domesticated, the wheel and carriage were invented and the nomadic tribes of this steppes spread all over Asia and Europe. Ukraine became the corridor between East and West. With help of the Vikings in the 9th century AD Kiev became the centre of the Kievan-Rus empire that had important (trade)relations with Constantinopel. Kiev was in the 10th century the biggest city of Europe, with more inhabitants than Paris or London. In 1240 Kiev was sacked and burned to the ground by Batu Kahn, the grandson of Ghengis Kahn and for about 6 centuries the city became of marginal importance. Catharina the Great put Kiev on the map again and Kiev developed into a metropolis of about 4 million inhabitants this
