Reisverhaal Round Ireland with a Fridge | Tony Hawks
Reisverhaal Round Ireland with a Fridge | Tony Hawks
Hilarisch reisverslag van een voetreis met een koelkast door Ierland. On his only prior visit to Ireland, songwriter/comic Tony Hawks had seen a man hitchhiking with a refrigerator. For years, he was wont to tell the tale during late-night drinking matches, and after one particularly heavy-duty night of partying, he awoke to find a bet scrawled pillow-side: a friend wagered 100 pounds that Hawks wouldn't travel Ireland for a month with a refrigerator at his side. Out of this stupid premise, a ridiculously amusing book was born. Quickly discovered by the Irish media, the thumbing Englishman finds that he and his box fridge are elevated to celebrity status, and there's no dearth of rides, places to stay or goofy people to meet, from kings to spoons players to locals who take his fridge surfing. As insightful about the strange inner workings of Hawk's mind as it is about charming peculiarities of Irishmen--it's doubtful that Hawks would have been similarly embraced by Germans, Italians, …

Reisverhaal Dreaming of Jupiter | Ted Simon
Reisverhaal Dreaming of Jupiter | Ted Simon
Ted Simon is the author of the classic travel book JUPITER'S TRAVELS. It documents his four-year journey round the world by motorbike, travelling through Europe, Africa, South and North America, and Asia. A number one bestseller in the late 1970s, it is still regarded as one of the greatest motorcycle books - indeed, one of the greatest travel books - ever written. In 2001, at the age of 69, Ted Simon decided to retrace his journey, and DREAMING OF JUPITER is the result. It took him two and a half years - during which time he revisited all the countries he had travelled through in the 1970s. He found much had changed, and he reflects upon the increased poverty, political upheavals, environmental issues and indeed the changes in himself. But ultimately, DREAMING OF JUPITER is a hugely inspiring read with a positive message at its heart - that even at the age of 70 you can still set off on an adventure, and be surprised and excited by what life throws at you along the way. *'Gloriously …

Floris Van Look. De goede richting (Paperback)
Floris Van Look. De goede richting (Paperback)
De Goede Richting (The Good Direction) is the first-ever monograph on Belgian artist Floris van Look (b. 1990), highlighting a body of work that blends figurative painting with humor, imagination, and profound reflections on the world around us. Known for his thickly layered oil and putty paintings, which verge on sculpture, Van Look offers a tactile, bodily experience that transcends traditional painting. Inspired by everyday encounters, literature, and mythology, he creates surreal worlds where the familiar is reimagined through a lens of fantasy, blending the ordinary with the extraordinary. This monograph is both an exploration of Van Look's artistic journey and a work of art in itself. With contributions from Herman Brusselmans and Lauren Wiggers, and a look into the artist's creative process through sketchbooks and preparatory works, it provides a deeper understanding of his techniques, inspirations, and the evolving nature of his practice. De Goede Richting is a testament to an

Lord of the Rings Replica 1/4 Helmet of the Witch-king Alternative Concept 21 cm
Lord of the Rings Replica 1/4 Helmet of the Witch-king Alternative Concept 21 cm
The process of making a film is oft an ever-changing journey. One such changed aspect was the helm worn by the Witch-king during The Return of the King. Whilst this first design was manufactured, and even had scenes shot, it was ultimately decided that its likeness to Sauron's own helm might be perplexing for the audience. Therefore, it was replaced with the Morgul Lord War Mask seen in the final cut of the film.Greatest of the Nazgûl was their leader, the Witch-king of Angmar. Once a mortal man lured by the promise of power, the former King of Men fell under the sway of Sauron until he was little more than an extension of the Dark Lord's presence, his own identity long forgotten. A formless wraith, fear was his greatest weapon, and it was said that by the hand of no man would he fall. For centuries he served his dark master, leading the campaign that saw Arnor destroyed in the north and bringing war to Gondor in the south. Even being sealed in a magically warded tomb could not contain…

The Dutch Approach (Paperback)
The Dutch Approach (Paperback)
'God has given us the ability to repair a congenital heart defect: why not, then, when body and mind do not match?' 'Whenever a TV program had paid attention to transsexualism, my phone would not stop ringing the next day.' In the early seventies, when hardly a doctor or hospital in the world was willing to offer medical care to transgender people, a few pioneers in the VU hospital in Amsterdam started a gender clinic. It evolved from a weekly consultation hour for people being treated with cross-sex hormones into a fully-fledged and internationally respected clinic for transgender health care. Some 10,000 people have now undergone gender-affirming treatment here and the Amsterdam Gender Team is known for its cutting-edge scientific research. Why did this traditionally conservative, Protestant Christian hospital decide to provide this care? What were the rationale and the vision that motivated the Dutch doctors? What role was played by social norms about gender? Alex Bakker describes

Reisverhaal An Unexpected Light - Travels in Afghanistan | Jason Elliot
Reisverhaal An Unexpected Light - Travels in Afghanistan | Jason Elliot
An account of a trip through war-torn and poverty-stricken Afghanistan, this remarkable book could have been titled "An Unexpected Beauty." Elliot, who first traveled to the country as a 19-year-old enthusiast of the mujahedin, has no illusions about the inherent shortcomings of travel writing ("a semi-fictional collection of descriptions that affirm the prejudices of the day"). He also dismisses the journalistic method, which relies on a single bombed-out street in Kabul to monolithically represent an entire nation. So it is not without some self-deprecation that he offers his own strange and improbable adventures in the country's lawless stretches and perilous mountain passes. "I had in mind a quietly epic sort of journey," he explains. "I had given up on earlier and more ambitious schemes and was prepared to make an ally of uncertainty, with which luck so often finds a partnership." Humorous, honest and wry, a devotee of Afghanistan's culture, Elliot strives to debunk the myth of "…

(How) Opera Works, (Hoe) opera werkt (Paperback)
(How) Opera Works, (Hoe) opera werkt (Paperback)
A profound approach to opera uncovers a gold mine of possibilities; opera is fuelled with the energy of the future. And while the search for gold will always go on, the other 'mines' - concealed in the operatic production process - must be tracked down and defused. Risk-taking is integral to the operatic process; without risks, an exciting policy is unthinkable.' It was with these thrilling and significant metaphors that, in 1988, Pierre Audi laid out his initial plans as artistic director of Dutch National Opera. It is now thirty years later, and the time has come to consider the gold mine that Pierre Audi discovered for us. Hence this publication, which contains the essence of Audi's ideas concerning music theatre, opera, and art in general. In it we can trace the changes and the development of his artistic vision over the last decades; through it we can see that opera is fuelled with the energy of the future. The book is written in both Dutch and English.

Productomschrijving

The story of doctor Ferdinand Peeters (1918-1998) and his role in the development of the pill has held Belgium in thrall for almost a decade. It is time to introduce the real father of the contraceptive pill to the rest of the world. After years of research, Belgian journalist Karl van den Broeck concluded that not the American Gregory Pincus was the inventor of the pill. His prototype had so many adverse effects that it wasn't a viable option in the long term. It was the Belgian doctor Ferdinand Peeters who, in 1959-1960, created the first clinically applicable contraceptive pill: Anovlar. It was this pill that set the standard for all future pills to follow. Ferdinand - Nand - Peeters was a devout Catholic and during an audience with pope John XXIII, he urged that the church should sanction the use of the Pill. But when Paul VI decided in 1968 that birth control other than the practice of periodic abstinence would remain forbidden, doctor Peeters didn't breathe a word about his role
