Leadership in the digital word (Paperback)
Leadership in the digital word (Paperback)
Digital technology is not only rapidly changing the world in which we live, it is also making it increasingly complex. In Leadership in the Digital World Ralf Knegtmans and Ylva Poelman explore the consequences of digitisation for organisations and the traits this requires in leaders. When they started working on the book, their perspectives were diametrically opposed. This makes their book a compelling search for answers that lie somewhere in the middle. As Managing Partner of a leading executive search firm, Knegtmans questions whether top business leaders are prepared for the huge impact digital technology will have on business and society. As an independent innovation consultant, Poelman adopts a different approach: this is not the first time humanity has had to adapt to major change. Those who were astute enough could have prepared for the digital revolution well in advance. Leadership in a Digital Age is a thorough quest into challenges all businesses will be facing, such as:

The Appeal to original status (Paperback)
The Appeal to original status (Paperback)
More than ever, justice and its administration is that which holds our society together. But justice is not merely what is contained in rules and regulations, as Henk Teunis shows in his book on disputes and their settlements in eleventh-century Anjou. By studying a large number of records and their colourful narratives with the help of anthropological concepts Teunis succeeds in reconstructing the basic notion of justice of the period. Before Montesquieu (1748) formulated the division into legislative, executive and judicial branches, people in the eleventh century had an unquestioned procedure for justice of their own, one that served as a bedrock or foundation. Putting the procedure into practice was a complicated affair, as it still is today. It had to be ingrained in the mindset of both the clergy and lay persons - it had to be taken for granted. From find scatters to early hominid behaviour (Paperback)
From find scatters to early hominid behaviour (Paperback)
The Belvédère loess and gravel pit, situated northwest of the town of Maastricht, The Netherlands, has been the object of an intensive archaeological-geological investigation between 1980 and 1990. The aim of the research was to study the remains of human activities during the last and penultimate glaciation and the deposits containing archaeological finds. This second report describes the geology of the site, the finds and sites, the palaeoenvironmental and dating evidence and the implications of all these data for the interpretation of hominid behaviour in the Middle Palaeolithic. Other publications on the Belvédère gravel pit are Analecta Praehistorica Leidensia 18 (van Kolfschoten and Roebroeks 1985) and Analecta Praehistorica Leidensia 35/36 (De Loecker 2004).

The light's at the end of the funnel! (Paperback)
The light's at the end of the funnel! (Paperback)
While few would still hold forensic DNA analysis for the cure-all for unsolved crimes that many once believed it to be, DNA evidence now clearly ranks as one of the most powerful types of forensic evidence available. In addition to its unrivalled potential to eliminate the innocent and include the potentially guilty, it has proved its capacity to produce a decisive breakthrough in hitherto unsolved crimes. Furthermore, it has been instrumental in resolving miscarriages of justice, thereby revealing the limitations of many traditional types of evidence, including (eye)witness evidence. Recent developments such as the increase in transnational crime, the blurring of national boundaries and the ongoing digitization of society, have made the exchange of DNA profiles across national borders a welcome new tool in the investigative arsenal. It enables the rapid identification of donors of DNA traces whose reference profiles are stored in foreign databases. To date, there have been some

Reisverhaal The Realm of the Punisher | Tom Sykes
Reisverhaal The Realm of the Punisher | Tom Sykes
In June 2016, Rodrigo Duterte won the Philippine presidential election by a landslide. Infamous for his bombastic temper and un-PC wisecracks, he is waging a brutal drug war that has killed more than 12,000 people so far.   Over the last nine years, British writer Tom Sykes has travelled extensively in the Philippines in order to understand the Duterte phenomenon, interviewing friends and enemies of ‘The Punisher’ – as he is known – in politics, the media, the arts and civil society. Sykes witnesses anti-government demonstrations in the capital Manila and visits the provincial city of Davao, where Duterte began his crusade against crime using police and vigilante death squads. By delving into Duterte’s troubled childhood of violent rebellion, Sykes discovers what motivates the man today in his pursuit of a merciless ‘war on the poor’ – as Amnesty has described it – that has no end in sight.   The Realm of the Punisher also examines oppressed and marginalized groups in the modern Phili…

What is the future of science and technology? Will academic research become a commodity like so much else? Will technology and science become ever more intertwined? Such questions concern anyone to whom science and technology matter. A philosophical approach can shed light on them, as Hans Radder has amply shown. This volume contains essays by colleagues and friends that highlight the wide variety of topics he has addressed in his work. Whether it is the interaction between science, technology and society, the nature of scientific experimentation, or the scientific realism question, Radder's approach is always acute and committed. With contributions by Henk van den Belt, James Robert Brown, Kai Eigner, Andrew Feenberg, Steve Fuller, Makoto Katsumori, Peter Kirschenmann, Christian Krijnen, Peter Kroes, Chunglin Kwa, Sabina Leonelli, Loet Leydesdorff, Alfred Nordmann, Pieter Pekelharing, Arthur Petersen, Henk de Regt, Angela Roothaan, László Ropolyi, Frits Schipper, and Astrid Schwarz.
