Psychological Communication (Paperback)
Psychological Communication (Paperback)
This book combines relevant theoretical insights and concrete communication skills necessary for effective counselling and coaching. The authors first explore the helper's basic attitude. Secondly, they discuss views from client-centred, cognitive behavioural and social learning theories that are important for good helping. Bridging theory and practice they describe the helper in four roles: confidant, communicative detective, teacher, and coach. The helper uses these roles within a three stage helping model: problem clarification, gaining new insights and treatment of the problem. As a guide to counselling practice they describe the essential communications skills for each of these three stages. Many examples from practice clarify the counsellor-client interaction which is discussed, throughout the book. The recent online material (www.psychologicalcommunication.com), accompanying this book, offers numerous exercises that are helpful to enhance the student's insight in the theories

Wandelgids Hadrian's coastal route | The History Press
Wandelgids Hadrian's coastal route | The History Press
Dit is meer een reisgids dan een wandelgids: de kaarten zijn slechts schetsmatig, een wandelkaart er bij is wel zo handig! Hadrian's Wall, running from Wallsend to Bowness, is a much visited attraction and an iconic landmark with over 200 years of serious research behind it. The Western Frontier has had barely 70 but through the efforts of a small band of archaeologists and the Hadrian's Wall Heritage Trust Ltd this is gradually changing. The frontier route followed in this guide, running from Ravenglass to Bowness on Solway, is punctuated by Roman forts, the visible remains of a frontier of watchtowers, mileforts and manned bases. ‘Be part of history, walk a frontier lost for over fifteen hundred years.’The Western Hadrianic Frontier of the Roman Empire is little known by the general public. Until recently the frontier was viewed as merely a series of forts with a fluid means of defence and administration between them, and the public was understandably drawn to the physical remains o…

International framework agreements and fundamental social rights (Paperback)
International framework agreements and fundamental social rights (Paperback)
In an era of economic globalisation, the declining regulatory role of governments competing for investment and the rising power of multinational enterprises are leading to a race to the bottom in the area of fundamental social rights. This issue needs to be redressed. It is essential to promote fundamental social rights, at both national and international level, in order to give economic globalisation a more human face. At present, the advancement of social rights is mainly in the hands of the International Labour Organisation, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations, which provide minimum labour standards that focus on governments and enterprises. Due to a lack of political will to develop legally binding agreements that directly address multinational enterprises, the implementation and recognition of fundamental social principles and standards throughout global supply chains are based mainly on soft law. In practice, social rights are largely

Understanding Prejudice and Education (Paperback)
Understanding Prejudice and Education (Paperback)
What is prejudice in the 21st Century and how can education help to reduce it? This original text discusses prejudice in detail, offering a clear analysis of research and theory on prejudice and prejudice reduction, drawn from findings in social psychology, critical thinking and education. Presenting the underlying principle that prejudice can be reduced through the development of four core attributes - empathy, understanding, cognitive flexibility and metacognitive thought - the book offers effective educational strategies for preparing young people for life. Chapters explore a range of examples of classroom practice and provide a thorough engagement with the minefield of prejudice, set against challenging sociological, ideological, political and cultural questions. An integrative framework is included that can be adapted and adopted in schools, synthesising findings and emphasising the need for individuals and groups to work against preconceived beliefs and emotional reactions to

Understanding the basic dynamics of organizing (Paperback)
Understanding the basic dynamics of organizing (Paperback)
Organization theory is a theoretical field of study distinct from more practical fields such as general management, organizational behavior and human resource management. It is a basic science studying the ways human actors organize themselves into groups with various degrees of complexity. Organization theory is not the study of organizations. Groups of actors referred to as 'organizations' in everyday parlance only constitute one part of the groups introduced in this text. Organization theory is, therefore, a necessary tool not only for students of business administration, but also for those of a wide range of other academic fields, including sociology, cultural anthropology, public administration, education and philosophy. Peter Peverelli is affiliated with the Faculty of Economics & Business Administration at VU University Amsterdam. He studied Chinese Language & Culture at Leiden University. He received a PhD in Arts at Leiden University and a PhD in Business Administration at

Logic and Islam (Paperback)
Logic and Islam (Paperback)
In part II of this book series Logic and Islam, we answer the main question: can science prove that the Holy Quran is from Almighty God and has a divine origin? To answer this question, we gathered 77 scientific miracles from the Holy Quran. These miracles are scientific issues that have been revealed 1400 years ago and proven to be correct through our modern science and technology. We present each scientific issue from revelation and historical points of view, by comparing the year of its revelation with that of its discovery by modern science. The 77 scientific issues are grouped in six different categories: 1) astronomical issues, 2) earth science issues, 3) medical and biological issues, 4) animal and plant issues, 5) physics issues and 6) historical issues. By using the theory of probability, we demonstrate that the possibility to predict all 77 issues correctly by chance is quasi-zero. In other words, if a human being tried to predict the 77 issues correctly, they would need an

An Archaeology of Exchange is primarily an archaeology of human sociality and anti-sociality. Nevertheless, archaeological studies of exchange are numerous and varied, and archaeologists do not always approach exchange as a social mechanism, concentrating rather on the cultural, economic or political implications of exchange. Even so, at times it is worth retracing the implicit theoretical steps that archaeologists have taken and look at human sociality through the eyes of exchange as something new. This will be undertaken here by concentrating on the exchange of social valuables in the later part of the Late Ceramic Age of the Greater and Lesser Antilles (AD 1000/1100-1492). Questions concerning this exchange will be framed in a novel mix of theories - such as Costly Signalling Theory coupled with the paradox of keeping-while-giving and the notion of gene/culture co-evolution joined with Complex Adaptive System theory. Still, all these theories can be related back to the concept of
